Agreed.

In regards to TWD, I'm on the 7th Trade Paperback already. Woodbury.
I'm loving the complete lack of abandon in the storytelling. It's like no character is ever safe. I can't wait to see how Michonne/the Prison play out on TV.

If you thought The Road was depressing or that the ending was bad, you missed the point of the book.

I got the "hope" moment in the movie but from what I hear the book was dearth of any hope.

The book and movie were very very close to each other, and I've seen/read them both, I honestly can't remember any difference in how they end. I believe they had the same amount of hope etc. The book was just better because my own mind could create the world in it etc.

I got the impression that at the end of the movie the people were still heading south looking for someplace, while the man in the book belonged to a group that had already established some sort of settlement.

One thing I took away from the Road is that the entire thing was about the love a father had for his son above and beyond all other things.

The book affects folks different ways, and as such affected me as well, primarily because I have a 4 year old grandson, and we spend a lot of time together. Some of the things in the book have a resonance that just scares the everloving shit out of me.

In many ways, the book is depressing beyond belief and emotionally draining. I had to put it down several times while reading it. The movie didn't quite capture as much of it, but was really close.

That being said, it fully deserved it's Pulitzer, and is the type of book that should be read every 10 years or so.

The point of the book was simple, they were each others whole world, and it's a very satisfying read.

I get the impression that the next time I read it, I will get something entirely different out of it, but I didn't endure it, I gained from it...

If that makes any sense.

It was grim, to say the least. Unrelentingly grim.

I concluded that the wife was the wiser.

But still a worthwhile read.

It was remarkable that CBS ever put it on the air to begin with - the theme is definitely not the usual network fare. The series was uneven, as most are, especially in their first season. Some of the relationship subplots were tedious but I'd bet the producers were under orders to balance TEOTWAWKI with some lighter character situations. And there surely were some unrealistic assumptions.

I'm hoping that if Netflix brings it back, the producers will have more leeway - ala TWD - to take Jericho in an edgier direction.

Not a lot to choose from in this genre.

I pretty much have to agree with you KO. While I was able to find a hopeful message in "The Road", it's portrayal of the world outside of the relationship between the man and the boy that was so dishearteningly realistic.

I suspect Hobbes' decription of life in the dark ages ("nasty, brutish and short") would apply equally well for existence in the post apocalyptic world.

It's the death of humanity (as in lower case "humanity") that would weigh on me more than the physcial hardships.....

And since your link is blocked here at work, looks like I'm going to remain in this existential funk a little while longer. :(

The best PAW book I feel is Earth Abides by George R. Stewart http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Abides

My reason for liking this book so much is it is about the reclaiming of the world by nature after our collapse, and the survivors struggle to find a new place with in the new world and maybe preserving a little knowledge of the past. It has a lot of practical observations of what really might happen in post collapse. While the story is a bit older, so missing some of our modern worries and issues, the story is fairly timeless and one that holds up well.

However the Road was very good, and is one of the better ones out there.
My favorite quotes from Rorschach from the comic Watchmen

"Once a man has seen society's black underbelly, he can never turn his back on it. Never pretend, like you do, that it doesn't exist."

"None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with *ME*!"
