I went to see this last night in Dallas. I think it's definitely worth watching. VERY dark and disturbing, but I think accurate in regards to human nature in general. In times of great stress, a person's true nature will come out. The main thing I took away from the movie: sadly, it changed my views about helping strangers and giving aid in a true survival/PAW scenario. And if you are going to be helping others; you had better be ready, willing, and capable of swiftly dealing with the inevitable good people turned bad. Even if booting them out into the cold most likely means they'll die. It certainly made me rethink a lot of my ideas, and reinforced others. One of the things it reinforced, don't attract attention or use comms just looking for other people, unless you can handle the attention.

A brief summary:


The movie starts with the bombs dropping and is immediately confusing and disorienting, which was a nice touch. People are fighting to get out of a New York highrise apartment building, and a group breaks off to head to the basement. There is a guy trying to shut the big steel door to the basement and he isn't fast enough. 2 brothers and a friend, a mother and daughter, a girl and fiance, and a security guard make it in with the building manager. Lots of shaking and crashing. Door is sealed and taped. Within an hour (story time) two guys are disregarding the "DON'T FUCKING OPEN THIS DOOR" rule. The guy is a prepper and has quite a bit of food and water stored away, as well as preps for everything else. Shows the complete boredom of being locked in a bunker. One guy is constantly on the radio calling out for survivors and giving out their location. Not a good idea. Scary people in high-tech fallout looking gear show up and kidnap daughter. They attempt to wipe them out afterwards. The basement people kill two of them and survive. One then suits up, takes the mall ninja m16, and goes outside to find out what's going on, since the door's already been opened. Daughter is being experimented on in a lab and in a coma, he kills several fallout guys, and hauls ass back to the basement. Fallout guys then come back and weld the basement door shut. Not good. Welded in with limited food/water and two dead bodies. Time goes by. They don't eat them and let them rot, so now they gotta cut up two rotting bodies and dispose of them down the "toilet". Goes way down hill from here. Mother attaches herself to the friend, and later the bad brother. PAW sex scenes ensue. Food/water runs low. Security guard finds out manager has another larger stash of food/water locked in hidden vault and gets killed. Manager is tortured for the combo by bad brother and friend. Meanwhile the fiance is losing it, girl likes the good brother, mother is raped/abused repeatedly by bad brother and friend in return for food/water, manager is kept duct taped in wheel chair. Fiance becomes nutty and is manipulated, mother is killed, bad brother and friend get nuckin futs and set sights on girl. Manager tells girl about a hidden gun and a way out and that he was holding back so that he could see who would go bad, she gets raped in the process of getting the gun, brothers and friend die, one of them having their throat cut with the top from a can. Basement gets set on fire in the process. While manager and nutty fiance fight fire; the girl suits up in fallout gear, loads up on food and water, and busts up the shitter. Manager and nutty fiance burn to death and she drops down the shitter into the sewer. She climbs up to the street to complete and total destruction. I assume she dies.

This. I saw it last night as well, and it really does help remind you that the PAW is not going to be this place where you get to be king of the junkyard, and that it is going to suck. Its really dark and intense, but if you dont mind that, it is a fairly realistic movie (as far as movies go at least) about small isolated groups and the PAW.


Also, anytime i saw the "soldiers" in the film, i kept thinking that their suits are the bastardized child of a Stormtrooper and a set of Fallout Power Armor.

Yeah, same in the Flint area. Although this does not surprise as Flint is not really an indie type film type town.

Yeah, the reviewer is an idiot. His, "How was the electricity still working?", comment serves as solid proof. Answer- small gas powered generator that had the exhaust piped down into the sewer. You have to remember, most people reviewing this type of movie is going to be like a vegetarian food critic giving you the run down of Ruth's Chris. They won't like it because of their preconception of survilalists/preppers; they know absolutely nothing about it; and the fact that they haven't given any thought to how people might react when faced with certain death by starvation or thirst. And if they have thought about it, they don't like the answers they get when they look in the mirror.

My last two Amazon purchases were a 7-day freeze dried food kit, and the blu-ray combo edition of "Serenity" (ordered yesterday).

This morning, Amazon's often brain-dead matching algorithm had a moment of logic, and decided to recommend the DVD of this movie. I'd never heard of it, but it sounded like something that would have been discussed here, so I skipped the A reviews and checked here first.

While the prepper/disaster stuff sounds interesting, rape/torture/etc is definitely not something we care to see, particularly in the context you described.

Hmmm... just took a closer look at the Amazon listing, and it was released today, yup, on tax due date. What an excellent release date choice/association! :\

It's listed at Netflix (via a Bing search), but I couldn't view whether it's currently available.

Honeypot, you're welcome. It is definitely NOT a movie for the kiddos. AT ALL! But on the other hand, I think it serves a purpose for some people. Basically it was a very rude awakening for me. I like to think I'm a very nice guy that will help out just about anybody, and I had kind of been thinking along these lines in a shtf event. Not anymore! It was a real eye opener and reminder that even good people can "go bad" in really bad situations.

This is available at RedBox now... watched it a couple days ago. Better than I expected (gotten burned by low-budget RedBox movies before). This was surprisingly good, if you take all the cliches with a grain of salt. Acting was better than average. Story was simple but had some twists (although anyone familiar with the genre could see where it was going). It got progressively darker until it was almost unwatchable with my girlfriend in the room. I'd go as far as to say it was even believable... however unlikely. If you put that many people, most of whom have severe emotional issues, into a confined space for a prolonged period... it's gonna get messy. If you liked this you should watch "Das Experiment" (also available in english as "The Experiment".
