EDIT: Okay, will probably end up using the watch stuff. How bright is it, however, and how long does it glow?

No data for you there, I haven't really run any tests with it. It should glow all night though, bright enough to see it at least.

Is there any way you could do so before I make this purchase? What colour is the watch paint, anyway? Light green or white (though I believe the latter is quite unlikely to be found while also being bright enough) would be ideal and I'd like a decent amount of glow for an alright amount of time. I'm assuming that some brief "recharging" from a flashlight would get them back in full running order again, but I'd like to use said flashlight as little as possible. It wouldn't be a major issue, but not having to worry about frequent recharges like that would be nice. I understand this is a glowing paint and not a battery-powered thing, so obviously it will be different.

As long as it lasts a pretty good amount of time and takes little time to "re-charge," I'll be happy.

Unless you want to wait a month, not really. My gun lives in a bag in my car and my living situation right now means it has to stay there unless I am going to the range. The paint goes on clear and glows a yellow green. It will charge with sunlight if you are outside all day, or about a minute with a bright flashlight will make it glow for hours probably. Your tac light going on and off will serve to re-charge it a bit as well.

Polley, by chance, I found some pics for you! Here's a few pics from someone who did some iron sights with the glow inc stuff:

No UV charge:

No data on the time for charging or how long they glow for, but there ya go! :D

Nice. Exactly what I was looking for!

Also, I can totally wait a month -- this is my last summer vacation before college, so... Going to make the best of it and, for obvious reasons, I'm going to definitely research thrice, purchase once this summer in regards to firearms equipment.

Don't forget a fat stack of ammo while you're at it. It is easy to burn through a lot in a short time.

I planned on spending money on only a couple things this summer: a couple magazines and a couple thousand rounds of ammunition. I did spend $100 on an M44 today, but I figured $100 wasn't too big of a set-back. I'd love to leave my AK at home and have it be friends with ~2,500 rounds of ammunition while I'm gone.

RPK cage installed up front. Nice piece for the money.
Hogue grip installed. Really nice, almost like an Ergo Grip for the AK...fills the hand well, feels good, and almost seems to help anchor the stock in my shoulder pocket better. I think I need one for my Norinco now!
Surefire G2 in hand. I like it, kudos on the tip for using spare o rings on it...seems like it would work well.

Is the monogrip the fatter rubberized one with finger grooves? If so, yes.

yeah, the kinda of "spongy" oversized grip, it fits my sausage fingers like it was molded from them.

So I had some bulgy furniture lying around in original condition and just for the hell of it I stripped off the finnish and sanded them and soaked them in kool aid for several hours and sanded them again and then applied redoak minwax stain. The color seems right. Now I need to get that deep red shine to come through any suggestions for final coating? Should I try tung oil or multiple coats of clear polyurathane and sand between each coat with 150 grit.

I also decided the finnish on my AMD was so bad I naval jellied it stripping it and rattle canned it to make it sort of a KLMK pattern. I taped off the rear leaf and front sight to retain black and I didnt paint the dustcover. I left the dust cover black because I didnt want to get visual aberations from looking at a camo dust cover. I have one of the rarer AMD's with the integral side mount for the sling and the wooden interim grips I re did the grips in just red aok no kool aid.

I did stick the AMD must of it any way in the oven to try to bake on the paint but i couldnt stick the rear in because the AMD has a rubber buttpad built into the side folder. Paint seems alittle soft still maybe bake it again?

Just do the polyurethane finish on the Bugly wood, worked for mine. Multiple coats are fine, I didn't sand in between on mine.

Any chance that a VTACT light mount + Ultimak would work? Or would it get too hot, and start to melt the light mount? Looking at them on Amazon...
Any other ones besides the Vltor that will take to the Ultimak without interfering with the sight pictures?

"AKs get FUCKING HOT."
I know... I've cooked my hand before on mine being careless.  Grabbed it a little too far forward once when packing it away... still hot enough to put an indent and smooth spot into my palm... and start to sting like hell a minute or two later.
Is why I asked the hive mind first to see if anyone has tried that route and found it made of fail. None of the other aluminum made ones have the same low sitting clamps as the Vltor. Was just looking to try and save a few bucks... but not at the cost of equipment failure.

Yep Vltor is the only game in town for the Ultimak light thingy.

You could also use a Larue light mount, but they are not cheap.

I use the Vltor mount on my AK though.

Yeah, I think it's a shame no one makes a comparable mount for less moniez. But it's proven and it works, and it's also QD so you can swap it between guns.

I ordered a Thorntail to try out. Should be here by the end of the week.

I like how it gives you more adjustability in where the light is positioned (more forward or more to the rear, depending on your hand placement) while still leaving the tail-cap unobstructed so you can change the batteries without having to dick with the mount.

Image

I won't know if it'll find a permanent home on my AK until I try it.....It'll end-up on one of my rifles, none the less.
