Stock images are pretty pathetic. Just sayin...
Does your BOB at least have: water, basic tools, fire, food, first-aid kit, and shelter?

Almost as good, for only twice the price, is my runner-up, Cold Steel's Bushman:

For a biggie on the cheap, Cold Steel's 12" machetes are decent.

If I had "real knife" money for a fixed blade right now, it'd go straight to Storm Crow.

Failing that, I'd probably go $50 Ka-Bar.

I think Mora is a real knife.
I have to say mora because some cold steel is fail .... mora cuts through phone books my cold steel won't It may be just my cold steel but I have had several and I think mora is just plain more pratical affordable and gets many jobs done. I will concede large heavy knives have an advatage in some tasks but they must give way to a good axe. A machette certainly has its place too.

K-Bar's are tough and cheap enough that if you decide later you don't want to hump a knife that big, you won't be kicking yourself for spending hundreds on something that will sit in a drawer. Mora's are also tough and cheap, but they are a better size for most camp chores. Your multitool will have pliers and scissors, you need pliers and scissors, you may not know you need pliers and scissors, but you need them.

For a little bit over $100 (maybe $120) you could get a Ka Bar which is a good all around big knife, a Buck 110 folder which is great for all manner of tasks as well as dealing with game and a leatherman or gerber multi tool. That setup would work pretty good for just about every knife task.
Take care of eachother

Personally, i used a home-made, traditional scandinavian knife for years, and it suited me well and fine. Lately i took a close look on what is out there and found out i needed to renew my "knife wardrobe". I landed on buying a BK2 first, got shocked by how ridicously thick, heavy and big it was (yeah, i know; "everything is big over there"), then i waited out a swedish net-auction, buying a Fällkniven F1 for 104 usd, which i reckon is a bargain.

While waiting i bought some folders as well, first a SOG Twich 2 for EDC, then i left it at my sisters during christmas and bought a Boker Mini Champagne, didn't get satisfied (strange how you can get addicted to buying knives, it's like James Wesley, Rawles says in one of his books "my wife claims i am only an expert in buying knives)) and went on to buy a CRKT M16 (not sure if i love the auto lawks, but i got used to it) and then a cheapo chinese ZB4-T21 from Sanrenmu (allthough in 8CrMov13, they claim) for a survival kit.

I figure you always have to choose the right tool for the job, and until i need to butcher an impala (that is, a chevrolet impala), i will leave the BK2 in the toolbox and stick with the F1 or a homemade one. The only thing i don't like about the F1 is the cheap and ugly sheath, but i can do something about that myself.
