Hypothetical: How Many Can You Buy At Once?

I was just wondering, say you were to come into a large amount of money, for arguments sake, let's say you won the lottery. I have a long list of guns I'd like to have. Most of them I'd collect over time, but there are several I would like to have right away. Call them my working guns. Two high quality ARs two lesser quality ARs for the BOL, a few shotguns, a few handguns, you get the picture. Basically enough to arm my GF and I and perhaps a few friends and family members should they show up empty handed in a disaster.

My question is, could I just go out and buy whatever I want without getting flagged by the ATF or would I have to space them out over time? If so, how much time between purchases. I know it's a silly question to ask considering the odds of actually winning the lottery are astronomical, but let's call it research for a book I may never write. lol

You should be able to buy as many as you want, as long as your State law does not have a limit. However, you may get delayed; it's not supposed to happen, but it does sometimes from what I hear.

There is basically no limit. The only official paperwork for multiple purchases (for an FFL) involved is an ATF form that's filed for the sale of more then one handgun within 5 days. It needs to be sent to the ATF and local LE (typically sheriff, sometimes State Police or Chief of Police depending on where you are). It 's not a big deal. If you win the lottery feel free to go crazy

Dealers along our southern border now have reporting requirements for multiple long guns as well. While this adds to their workload and overhead and makes them less competitive for internet sales I don't expect there will be any effective legal challenges to this selective/unfair bureaucratic burden any time soon.

You will get the attention of the ATF. Depending on what you buy and what you do with it it shouldn't matter, but buying several at once or even over a short time frame will get their attention.

Out here the state says only one handgun per transaction.There is some special forms if you want to buy a matched set of handguns for say cowboy action shooting or something. Long guns theres no limit per transaction.

I've bought...rather a lot....in one purchase before, and not been hassled one bit, except for carpal tunnel filling out forms.

In Canada now that the Long Gun Registry is dead (and realy even before) I can walk into a store, sign my name in the book for each one and (of course) with an inspection of my PAL I can walk out with as many long arms as I want that day.
Some times being a Canadian rocks.

Pretty sure that the Form 4473 is kept at the dealer in their "bound book" unless you buy more than two handguns at a time. Two or more in five days or less triggers the dealer to fill out a 3310.4...

If you sell or dispose of more than one handgun to any non-licensee during a period of 5 consecutive business days, the sale must be reported on ATF Form 3310.4, Report of Multiple Sale or Other Disposition of Pistols and Revolvers, not later than the close of the business day on which you sold or disposed of the second handgun. The licensee must forward a copy of the ATF Form 3310.4 to the ATF office specified thereon, and another copy must be forwarded to the State police or local law enforcement agency where the sale occurred. A copy of the Form 3310.4 also must be attached to the firearms transaction record, ATF Form 4473, documenting the sale or disposition of the second handgun.

In December of 2010 ATF sent this notice that set up same requirement for long guns in sales in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. I'm not sure if or when it expired, as there was confusion as to when that would happen, or even if it would happen. It was supposed to be a one year pilot.

I have 4 stamps pending and I'm a 7 months on the oldest one. However 2 came at one time. One was 6 months and the other was at 4. I don't see any reasoning why yo'd expect any delay unless you paper work is wrong. Remember, unless your sheriff says no and you are denied with cause they have to issue the stamp.

So you're hypothetically buying a dozen firearms? If it were me, I'd buy one a day over a two week period. You've waited this long for them, what's another two weeks to avoid any potential unwanted attention. But, that's just me, YMMV.

I don't think it matters. I bought several over a period of time in Texas and during my move to Georgia, an ATF was trying to track me down regarding my purchases. He was very reasonable when I invited him out to GA Actually, he just asked if I had sold any (which I hadn't) and that was the end of it. If you buy them all in one day or over a couple of years, you're going to attact attention in some states. I wouldn't worry about it...just make sure you have enough ammo to feed them and shoot until you're trigger finger is content!
