Small pickup truck with camper shell +extended cab. I'd have a sleeping area in the back as well as storage while bugging out, plus the added advantage of being able to haul equipment and do supply runs for my BOL.

Work truck

Postby omnitech » Mon May 14, 2007 11:03 pm

Now this may violate the rules a little bit but since i ride in one every day for work i just thought id post it. http://www.bmefire.com/apparatus/m62.htm
I think it would be great in a PAW enviroment because of what it is used for in normal operation....plus ours has enough food on it for at least a week....plus that 500 gals of water is easy to filter to drink

1977 el camino... [sp?] my father had one of these he sold it and i've been looking for one ever since this car is a beast my dad use to pull entire tree stumps out they were atleast 6-8 inches across. it may take a lot of gas but that sob was tuff. i really wish he kept it even if you could do fred flintstone in it. hell the only problem with it was starting it up in the winter. also a tip for winter take some coals from your fire place and put them in a pan then put said pan underneath your engine block it'll help warm your oil up thus make starting your engine cold much easier. done this a number of times it helps.

The 90 bronco I mentioned before is gone now and is replaced with a more fuel efficient 06 F-150 supercrew 4x4. There are no upgrades short of a hypertech programmer and a K&N right now but there are some in the works.

Just picked up a F150 flareside supercab. Fuel economy sucks but its a 4x4 and it hauls quite a bit.

The tank is also 25 gallons, so the range is excellent.

Full review coming up soon.

A future project I have in mind is taking a postal jeep, transplanting some four wheel drive components from a CJ, and having der uber PAW truck. Did I mention the 6 inch lift and 35 inch super swampers? I SO NEED A GARAGE.

I am a big fan of the postal jeep, not great on gas but with a 6 cylinder it is rated at 1/2 ton. It is SUPER easy to work on and after you have owned for a while you can fix almost anything on it with a $20 walmart tool kit, some electrical tape, and speaker wire.

I hope this works. There should be a picture of my postal jeep I bought in the middle of nowhere Kansas a couple of weeks ago. It has been worked on A LOT since then and the body work with OD green paint has begun.

Very Nice Jeep. I like my DJ because I can make almost any part off of another vehicle work on it and it can be "fixed" under almost any circumstances. I can haul four in it counting the driver and the big back door makes it ideal for quickly loading and unloading supplies or extracting a couple of people from a tight spot. It is VERY small and can get in and out of tight places. I also have a communications rig that is going into it, CB, HAM, etc.

I just want another Jeep Cherokee. Older (1990s) model, low mileage, in good condition.

Although my Grandma's Toyota 4Runner is a sweet-ass ride, and her Westphalia is like an awesome little house on wheels.

The 4runner or land cruiser is an awesome choice. I just could never afford either one. That is why I bought an $800 postal jeep...

Yeah, I can't afford one either. I bought an $800 Jeep (Cherokee), and when that got wrecked, I spend the insurance money (other guy's fault) on a month-long vacation with the wife, where we borrowed my grandma's 4Runner and drove it all over CA. Great time, great ride, but yeah...still can't afford one. We're on public transportation for the present, could afford another cheapo car but don't really need one at the moment so we're waiting til we fall in love with something, stumble on a killer deal, or start making grown-up money we feel like spending on a "real car."

My thread has been revived! Haha!

Priorities have changed a bit since adding a little one to the family. Money became tight so had to keep the CRV. It can haul a pretty good amount of gear. I have a bike rack at the rear for my mountain bikes and triathlon bikes. Planning on getting a roof rack to haul extra/bulky gear . I need one for the surfboard anyway.
I already put in slightly wider and higher profile tires from the stock ones and it adds grip and improves handling.

I seriously recommend something like this for folk in any large river basin:

Image

If needed, bike can tow canoe with gear in it over land and bike goes in canoe to cross rivers/go downstream. Jeep could be replaced with something more appropriate. Canoes can hold 3 paddlers, you can cartop up to 3 canoes safely (2 side-by-side, one on top of them like a pyramid), and I've found bike carriers that can hold up to 5 bikes. This is doable for up to a family of 5.

Bigger families will need a second vehicle or a trailer.

My bug out vehicle is my first truck and so far only truck:
1994 Chevy K1500 4x4 Reg. Cab
Replacements for all electronics stored in fairaday cages at my BOL
Ranch hand brush guard
Westin step bars
Cobra cb radio (w/ replacement)
Bed cap for bed.
Room for about 3 years worth of mre stuff in custom box storage in bed
I purchased it running with extra engine parts (vitals) for 1400, I including that I only have about 4500 invested
Plenty of fuel at my BOL about 5 miles away.

If your spare electronics are at your BOL then they aren't going to do you much good getting to your BOL.

And if eating MRE's for three years didn't kill you outright, you'd probably want to kill yourself by then. Fortunately, your "three year supply" estimation is a gross exaggeration since, assuming 2 per day, that would be 2,190 MRE's, weighing (without the boxes) about 3,200 lbs. and take up about 900 cu.ft. of room (unstripped).
