I have a concealed carry permit. I have a nice shoulder rig I carry my Glock in. It fits nice under my riding gear. And is accessable with through the chest zipper. Or I have a snubby revolver I carry in the chest pocket of my riding gear. I know some people say they would never carry a pistol on their person b/c they don't want to land on it during a crash, but I think that would be more of an issue w/ a pistol worn on your hip.

Everyone has to make their own risk assessments, but for myself, I'd be too concerned about the increase in risk of traumatic chest injury (flail chest, popping an aorta, etc) with having a large hunk of metal in that region. You're right, though, there is risk associated with carrying on the hip, but intuitively without doing much research, it seems even a pelvic fracture is going to be more survivable. Myself, I usually carry a P3AT in my pants pocket when riding. It's not ideal, but I think it's a good balance of risk for me.

I agree, I don't carry on body on a bike, but I've had a pretty decent deer-crash so I'm more paranoid than some. A big chunk of metal or plastic/metal around your chest or abdomen when you go flying off the bike, isn't worth the risk associated IMHO.

The odds of a crash are much greater than the odds of an incident in which an on-body CCW comes into play on a motorcycle.

Its not IF you will crash, its WHEN. Dress for the crash and not the ride, and you'll be OK.

She's a goer! She goes! Know what I mean?

Shifter side mostly completed. Just need to clean a few things up and put some locking hardware on the push rod.
Image

Brake side: I may need to rebuild this at a later date. It's too low. The pedal should be about 1 1/2" higher to make using the brake easier. It works fine, but I think it could be better.
Image

As expected, the rear sets really add to the comfort and control of the bike. It's much more a part of you, if that makes sense.
Unexpectedly, it is no longer a wheelie monster. I'm guessing that having my legs tucked up that tight tended to force my weight up and back, whereas the new riding position keeps my weight forward and low.

Great job with your build. Bikes will make great scouting tools and help in delivering goods from place to place fast.

Just scored a titled DT400, which is my Holy Grail! Not running, but not locked up either. Pics later.

Hey guys. I'm starting a restore on my grandfather's 1966 Honda CB450. Thought I'd share.

The year he bought it.

Image

Now:

The tank was completely rusted out. Have to replace it.

Image

I'm having a hard time finding a tank for it though. I'm keeping my eye on ebay. Anyone have a resource for a gas tank?

I'll keep ya updated!

There are quite a few CB450 tanks on ebay, but I'm not seeing any for a 1966. I don't know what years interchange, but that's probably your best bet other than a local motorcycle swap meet.

Well I traded my 86 Honda shadow for an 02 KLR-650. Here are the pics of it how I got it.

Here it is with the ammo cans attached
Image

and from the side without
Image

Right now I have all the plastics off and have been sanding them down to the original plastic in preparation for a new snakeskin camo paint job. I also have tires, tubes, and aftermarket front turn signals on order. Once I get the Clymers manual I'll be tearing into the engine to do the doohickey upgrade and check valve clearances.

Future plans
Drill through subframe upgrade
New IMS 8-10 gallon tank
LED rear turn signals and brake light
Upgrade the headlight
Maier handguards
Taller windshield
Upgrade the braking system (oversized rotor and steel lines)
Progressive front springs
Also be switching to soft luggage

I'll post as I update things.

Falkin88:
In case you didn't know, those are not ammo cans. They are "Mermmite" cans. Used to bring hot chow to the field for soldiers. Think of them as as big thermos containers for food. Though I have seen them used to hold .50 cal ammo for an M2 before.

Nice bike and I can't wait to see this painted.

Nice bike. That's a CB450K0, the "Black Bomber," and good tanks for those are pretty rare and highly coveted. Sadly, tanks are about the hardest part to come by. I agree that eBay is probably the easiest place to look, but I'd expect to pay at anywhere from a few hundred to several hundred for a tank depending on condition. Is there absolutely no way the original tank can be repaired and/or sealed? My CL450 had a pretty badly rusted tank and I was amazed at how well it cleaned up when I finally got around to tackling the job. :)

great looking bike

How rusty is the tank? Is it just lots of internal rust and scale, or holes and such? I've had good luck cleaning tanks out with diluted muriatic acid, then coating them with Por15 tank liner wich will actually seal small holes

Finally found the Krylon that I was looking for. I already had the plastics prepped for once I found it so did a test piece today. Here is what the KLR has in store.

It's pretty hardcore rust. It was coming out in scales....there was still old funky gasoline...and i accidentally punched a dime sized hole in the top....very easily...felt like paper. So i'm assuming its pretty much ruined. I will however ATTEMPT cleaning it up....to see just how bad it is. A NOS tank runs from 700-1500 depending on if it has the side pieces...is painted already etc...i'm looking into the slightly used but very restorable type right now...lol those are a little less demolishing on the wallet. I have read about the POR15 though...if i can find a tank that's restorable, that's what I'm going to use. ;)

Very nice there's a guy on YOutube running one stripped down about like yours running a supercharger on it.

Another guy who works at the local Cycle Gear runs a Goldwing (about that vintage also) chopper.
