Not one to shirk my duties, I will begin conducting routine patrols of my AO with my intreped mutts as weather permit.

I must report in from Bushkill, Mt. Airy has been overrun for some time (according to my fiance the front desk manager) as well as Fernwood and most of Pike and Monroe County.

Looks like it's been good that I've been buged-in with a sinus infection here in Pike County. Now that I am almost feeling 100%, I will be ramping up my patrol in my area. Reports to follow.

Mission: Weekly Patrol of the Jacobsburg state park in Belfast, Pa. Weather: 55º and partly cloudy (gorgeous) Crew: Myself and Riley the Zombie Response Dog, my spousal equivalent and Lola the Boxer/Lab (Boxador) mix. Equip: mobile phones, Riley's ruck @ 10lbs and my daily EDC.

After action report: Again, I am hapy to report no zombies but we continue to find some odd and or interesting things on our patrols. A great albeit muddy afternoon with many citizens, their kids and K9's out on the trail enjoying the weather and park. Photo recon to follow:

For cripes sake, whats up with the rock stacking in Pennsylvania??? Did I miss a memo? Cairns cairns everywhere!




Bottom of a steep hill, plowed into a tree in what appears to be the 1950's. Anyone care to identify this from the taillight on the right? It was a 8 cylinder if that helps.



What do we find drawn on the wreck? A sketch of Riley the wonder dog. (this really creeped him out, he is going to refuse to patrol if this keeps up)

UPDATE:
Still patrolling NePa, but work has kept me from posting my reports so I will try to catch up a bit over the next day or so.
Rest assured that the patrolling continues because
A) My AO must be kept safe from the undead menace.
B) If I don't patrol I will get fat (er).
C) Riley will shit on the floor.

Sooo, To catch up

Location: Pennsylvania state game lands, nortwest of Wind Gap, Pa. Team members: myself and Riley, the Zombie Response Dog.
Equipment: EDC for me 9lb ruck for Riley.
Weather: Sunny and unseasonably warm @ 53ºF.
After Action Report: No undead found but possible sign noted with the discovery of a very large skeleton. Examination of said skeleton shows it to have four femurs so I am going with it being a former deer (thats my story and I am sticking to it) In addition a lovely "Zen like" relaxing hike. Woodpecker problems

The source of the brook...a spring, bubbling right out of the ground, as fresh as it gets. Yes I drank it, no I did not get sick.

Yes, yes, but did you not notice the distinct teeth marks all over said deer skeleton? Almost as though something or things were gnawing on it? Or that once Riley got a good sniff he backed away from it, whimpering?

Remember: it's not always like in the movies where you round a bend and boom! there's a ravenous zombie devouring what's left of dear aunt Gertrude. Or a ravenous dear aunt Gertrude devouring what's left of something else (no wait, I'm thinking of last Thanksgiving dinner).

The point is, being alert to the often subtle signs of the zombie is the first step towards getting a leg up on the undead menace. Carry on, soldier.

You're lucky Blue! I've been seeing signs of possible infestation up in Pike County everywhere I look. I have not yet confirmed the undead, but shamblers are everywhere. More patrols are required...primarily to keep Elsa from taking a poop on the floor, then to monitor status.

Weather: 60 F in March! Sunny.
Team: Me and Riley the Zombie Response Dog
Equip: EDC for me 9lb ruck for Riley

After action report: Lots of civilians out today, most happy the Pennsylvania Zombie Response Team is patrolling, some think it is a joke and I am just some fat guy out walking his dog...the nerve. No walkers were found and Riley did not alert on anything but several things of note. 1) wildflowers were noted in March on the AT. 2) A butterfly was seen (in March!) 3) getting Riley OVER Wolf Rocks safely, is eluding me. This IS the AT to Wolf Rocks. Wolf Rocks is not just a clever name.


Nearing the summit of Wolf Rocks, notice the trail flash painted on the tree. Through hikers dont call this Rocksylvania for nothing.

Mission: AT North from Fox Gap to Kirkridge trail shelter and Overlook
Team: Me and Riley the Zombie Response Dog
Equip: EDC and 10lb ruck for Riley.
After action report: Another unseasonably warm day , another rocky trail. The following excerpted from a trail guide of the area...", Rocksylvania saves some of the toughest hiking for last. This 8.1 mile toe stubber proves it, with many closely, if erratically, spaced rocks that make it more of a job than an adventure. The unfunny joke among the hiking set is that the trail maintainers use files to sharpen the quartzite shards each spring. One through-hiker from Michigan, encountered during a rest stop on the way up the ascent from Fox Gap during the summer of 1997, commented that he wasn’t too keen on the trail through Pennsylvania because of all the rocks, but couldn’t offer a good opinion on the rest of the state because he never was able to look up long enough to see it" found some ticks on us today so patrollers BEWARE.

Some interesting trail sign which, according to majorhavoc could be construed as the undead and should be taken seriously.

I still think these things look like Umbrella Corporation markers.


Well its either walkers or raccoon since I found no bear scat, thanks to majorhavoc a close eye will be kept on it, Riley did not alert which is a good thing.

Very effective camoflage your new recruit is employing; I had to look twice before I even noticed there was a canine in that picture.

Blue: looking at the pics of the rocky trail, bring back some painful memories, my feet & ankles actually started to feel like they were sore. Like I said painful but good memories... Some of my favorite hikes(and I've been all over) has been in your neck of the woods.

Normal daily check of local perimeter, Patrol carried out in West Bangor, Pa. Two mile patrol concentrating on the Verona Ave area. Another false alarm caused by the omnipresent herd of deer which at this point are like vermin in the NEPA (North Eastern PA, get it?). Geez louise this friggin' road gets dark even with the occasional street light. Orion the hunter is clearly visible and hovering over Verona Ave and I must confess I find it comforting. Tonight I tried Zombie,Run app on my android. This should not be confused with the Zombies, Run (not the plural) for IPhone. From what I can tell the Iphone app looks much cooler but still, having virtual zombies closing in on me was oddly cool and made me break into a jog. Supposedly the IPhone app is coming to the android market this Spring and I am looking forward to trying it out as well. Photo Recon (for what its worth) Attached.

Thought I might share some of my gear (kit for our UK friends), used in NEPA during Zombie Patrol operations.



First up is my Leatherman and MiniMag (LED). I take this off to shower but that's about it. The case is homemade from a Tandy Leathercraft kit, has a spring steel belt clip and has been used nonstop for 2 years now...highly recommended.




This is a belt pouch from Home Depot or Lowe's with a spring steel belt clip for urgent grab and go patrols (zombie attack or Riley has to take an urgent dump) from the top clockwise we have a dog waste dispenser, a Ray-O-Vac 200 lumen crenelated head and butt, tactical flashlight (runs on AAA's and is only 20 bucks!), a parting stick made from a tent peg (lots of bully breed dogs in my neighborhood including my own pibble (pit bull), small pruner for when our bushwacking lands us in the brambles (seriously if your bushwacking get one!) and a pair of work gloves. The main compartment holds my smartphone.


My melee weapon is either my Lobo or this Injection molded Irish Shillelagh by Cold Steel. This bad boy will wreck a cinder block no prob.

Riley, the Zombie Response Dog uses a pack by Zack and Zoey which needed to be reinforced on several seems and modded a bit. Riley carries this pack for our communal drinking water and to wear his ass out so he doesn't eat my sofa (again). Each bottle is a liter (litre for our UK friends) weighing one kilogram or 2.2 lbs. Riley is up to 6 liters or 13.2 lbs. He also carries an Outward Hound bowel to drink said water from as our experiments with him using a camelback did not end well.

Last night, while on a toy run at pet smart I found a nice selection of doggie packs. I'll be returning with Elsa to pick up a new one ad well as a pair of full up bowls. Blue, this is the Pet Smart in Stroudsburg by Old Navy and Olive Garden. Intersection of 611, 80, and 33 if that helps ya.

I know it well, Riley was in there 10 min after we got him, Stroudsburg born and bred he is. Currently just over the mountain from his parents lol Thanks for the heads up!

Also, regarding dog food, I use FROMM brand on my four dogs and have had great luck with it isn't that expensive especially if you save 12 labels then your next bag is free. Fromm is a Wisconsin company that has never had a recall in 90 years and uses 100% US sourced human grade ingredients. I give it 2 Zeds up, Riley says "check it out."

Judging by your most recent photo reconnaisance, I see that Riley is ideally suited for night time zombie patrol operations. Excellent work.

Back when I was a dog owner, my own zombie patrol dog loved his back packs. Mostly because I only ever put them on him when we were going out on a lengthy (usually overnight or longer) patrol. Jasper came to associate them with extended backcountry missions, which he never failed to volunteer for.

I too had a packable nylon water bowl for Jasper, but unlike you guys, that was never part of our backwoods zombie patrol loadout. Only for alpine missions above the treeline or extended forays in urban "hot" zones. Jasper was as adept at finding hidden watering holes in the woods as he was at finding the undead. Or the merely dead, which he loved to roll in extensively, and then provide me with an extended ofactory report thereafter. He was quite conscientious in that one aspect of his patrol duties.

The proper feeding of the zombie patrol canine is, of course very serious business. Whilst the Fromm brand is unknown to me, by your description it appears to meet all zil-spec requirements and shall henceforth be listed on the offical roster of ZS-approved canine provisions.

Beneful is what i used to use. Fromm has meat (human grade) as its first ingredient so by law that is what the majority of the composition is.

I use the purple bag stuff which is their low end non-gourmet line. It works out to about $1:08 a pound last time I did the math AFTER you figure in the 13th bag is free which is roughly what Beneful goes for. You save the upc's and just take em back to the store and pic up a freebie of the size that the majority of your upc's are of. I buy 2 30lb bags every 2 weeks or so.

They have a store finder on their website, the closet to you I would guess would be were I get mine at Washington Pet in Pen Argyl.

Good luck with it Bro, it is some good stuff, and FYI its actually even more economical because of the high protein to carb ratio (low glycemic index) it's better for dogs and you feed them less of it. The good folks at Washington Pet will school you in dog nutrition Who knew?
