Definitely cards. Nothing like getting the big joker and running a "Mo" when the chips are down.
Whittling would be useful, and it's by-product ->sharpening.
People put too much emphasis on ole’ Charlie Darwin’s theory about the survival of the fittest. It has produced a cottage industry of shake-weights, special-muscle-morphing powder drinks, and girly men that sell exercise videos. Not me.

  1. Game developer, specifically tabletop RPG games. 1 book, some paper and a few pencils to pass large chunks of time when needed(healthy escapism).
  2. helpdesk/tech: if electricity is still an option via generator or solar cells, I'd be all about setting up a darknet, or local intranet for my village of survivors. Get civilization jump started again, get the PDF's flowing on people learning new skills, I keep USB keys filled with useful rebuilding info just for this purpose. Even keep a few in a Fariday cage to protect against EMP. also useful for communication with say the front gate and the back gate of said zombie fortress.
  3. Eventually want to add amature radio to my list of hobbies. In time...
  4. Farming and culinary/medicinal herb growth and harvesting.
  5. Mild woodworking

Since you mentioned hobbies, being a bookworm is probably NOT a bad thing since you're easily entertained reading. There is the problem of HOW to carry. I'm not 100% sold on the idea of a Kindle although I do own one and have an Android Kindle app on my phone. The problem is that damn battery: no juice - no books! I do carry a backup battery for the phone with adapter tips. It would be nice to also make sure you have a "fat" book. I enjoy reading "The Rommel Papers" and browsing fanfiction.net when I'm bored. Anyone else keep Kindles or e-readers in mind when considering PAW stuff to fight the Big B? (B = Boredom!)

Not really. On foot how do you charge? Some sort of solar power maybe.

In a car, maybe.

I'm giving this a lot more consideration, now that I've found a solar/windup charger with a USB port. I have an inverter I use in the Jeep that has a USB port, but eventually, with no fuel, that would become just another quaint little curiosity. With the solar/windup radio I bought, I have AM, FM, 7 bands of NOAA, and a way to charge phones and e-readers. Without needing fuel. And, it fits in a pocket, so it isn't some huge bulky thing, either.

I plan on a bug-in if possible, so between a small solar unit, and hand crank (as soon as I can find/buy/rig one up with enough juice) and a stash of paper books, I'm good on that front.
Opinions subject to change without in light of new information.

Reading, cooking, working out, tinkering, woodwork... I think I'd be good. I would miss a lot of my more technology related hobbies, such as building custom cars, Dj'ing, Film work, & video gaming (i'd bust out the RPGs again yeah. Ironically, I have the whole RIFTS series still...)
When I die, bury me 8 feet under, so I'll still be lower than all my friends.

If I bug out I am planning on taking my Nook. It has been rooted with CM7 android OS. I have several MicroSD cards I have spent hours a day loading with everything I can. Area maps (street and topo). Games. And books. a lot of books. Not just survival books. Also sci fi and such. And last card is for music.

As for power I have a solar charger to keep it charged. It isnt bad though does take longer then a standard outlet. I saw it listed on here and got it.

http://www.amazon.com/External-Universal-Charging-Smartphones-E-readers/dp/B004GVIZC4/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_0

I can strap the charger to the top of my backpack while I am walking to charge things. Not just the nook. So it works out great.

The biggest problem I have considered is protection. You cant just stash it in your pack. It needs a case to protect it from the elements and being hit. Crack the screen and its useless. So I am looking at the following case for it.

http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-Products-HardBack-Computer-1055-003-110/dp/B006FR1KHE

That should do the job fairly well.

My nook will serve as a bug tool but also as a way to relax. Listen to music, read a book, play an app game. Whatever I need. I also added a Nintendo DS to my daughter's BOB so she has something to help her relax. Along with about 30 games. Nice thing about those games... They take up very little space. My wife also has a DS as well in her BOB. Now if only MS Xbox would come out with a handheld. I would be better set.
