I need ideas for a weekend bug out get away.

Postby CaptAmerica » Tue Apr 03, 2012 6:58 pm

I am still learning my way around North GA. So I am looking for some place to go backpacking the the kids; 11 and 13 yrs old.

We want to find a quiet place to go with nothing but our backpacks. A quiet place.

Additionally I want to use this as a little mock SHTF type bug out for them. So any ideas on things we could do that are still age appropriate are more than welcome.

My kids are both experienced campers, but like most kids they are spoiled to hot meals, phones, electricity and such. I want to create a trip where they have to be a little more self reliant.

Thoughts or ideas anyone?

I found this place hiking the appalachian trail a few weeks ago. This place is nice. It's free, shade, water, and the trail is literally right there. You and the kids would have a blast up there. Perfect place to bug out to!

There are primitive camping areas at the Little Grand Canyon http://www.gastateparks.org/ProvidenceCanyon

Been there, but not camping. It was very nice and very quiet.

At last meeting we discussed having a chapter camp out sometime in the fall, we just need more input from members to plan it :D

Ha! That's pretty awesome van! At the very least, would be good for a photo opportunity. How abandoned is it? Like, what state is it in (re: safety)?

To be honest I'm not sure if we could make this an "official " meeting place. Its not a major safety issue because of how this place was built (*read-Bunker) but because I've never looked into the legality of being in there .. It may be "frowned upon "

LolOkay so I dug around and found some more info in the abandoned nuclear facility in/under Dawson Forrest. It was built in 1950 and remained operational until 1971. I was built as a joint project between the USAF and Lockheed Martin to test the idea of using nuclear power for planes. Certain details are apparently still top secret but what I can gather is that the reactor was suspended above a containment pool when in use. The process was " open air" so it would irradiate the surrounding area and they would test the effects and radiation level over time.

Apparently they concluded that RADIATION IS BAD  lol. Because all of the surrounding wildlife died and it is only in the last 20 years or so that things have returned to normal.

They also did tests on the effects of radiation on just about everything they had: vehicle , weapons you name it...
But here is the really interesting part when the. site was closed down in1971 it was totally flooded the official story is that the pumps that kept it from being flooded naturally went out. However I have seen multiple accounts that say a "no name " private company handled the Demo and it was flooded to keep secrets burried.

I am sorry if I hijacked your thread ; I just find this extremely interesting.

Went to Raven Cliffs (above Dawsonville)saturday/sunday for a overnight to test cold weather gear. 27 degrees with 20 -25 Mph winds and it snowed overnight. about 2 mile hike along river with plenty of spots for tents and downed trees for firewood.
I like blood moutain (AT), springer moutain (AT) and fort mountian loop trail.
