Useful or not?

As a tool you could easily barricade doors/windows.

As a weapon it would easily break a skull or do some massive damage.

I am on the record as pro-hammer. 22-28 oz. would be better. With a straight claw.

I'm gonna vote no. A rock, cast iron skillet and a multitude of other items can be used to drive a nail. Realistically the odds of you needing to barricade yourself in somewhere is pretty low. For the weight of a standard claw hammer you can pack a jar of peanut butter, which is far more likely to be used. A couple of hammers at home, one in the truck sure, but not in a pack I plan to carry for any significant distance.

I’ve been packing fencing pliers for my past three deployments; they come in handy on several tasks from “hanging” nails, digging commo-wire, tearing apart wooden structures, cutting heavy gauge wire, killing camel spiders, etc.








Got to love “multipurpose” tools; hammer, cut wire/bend wire, punch holes in zombie skulls!

Inmost situations a carpenter hammer is more useful than a standard claw hammer... you just have to be more careful with it.

I learned: Don't buy cheap ones. I got a pair for probably $10 off Amazon a couple years ago for a fencing project, and pretty much ruined them during the 3-day job. I think they were steel, but not heat-treated, so the knurling on the hammer face just mushed in and the pry end had dents in it just from prying staples out of posts.

I live in a suburban/urban area, so I agree a hammer could come in handy in several situations.

There used to be a claw hammer in one of my vehicle kits, but it's been removed, same with the bug-out gear.

Depends on where you are, but hammers sometimes get lumped in with what police consider burglary tools.

I stopped packing them because I didn't want to risk being accused of looting. Still have a few set aside as bug-in equipment.

Now, if I wake up and the world's turned "The Road" or "Book of Eli," yup, a hammer's likely coming with me.
