Budget Cuts: Taurus 24/7 Pro DS 9mm

Postby Dead_One » Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:14 pm

Thought my first handgun thread should be dedicated to the newest addition to my Taurus family the PT 24/7 Pro DS in 9mm Luger. The magazines hold seventeen rounds and I got to shoot it yesterday for the first time. The Heine sights are great, recoil is much less with the 9mm and with the four inch barrel the accuracy is good. I didn't have any malfunctions or any problems with the operation. Just a very well-rounded, polymer, and affordable pistol to have for double-duty. I have a aluminum framed Pt-92 and by comparison the 24/7 stacks up to it pretty good.
The trigger takes a little getting used to because there is about a quarter inch of slack there before you feel the sear release the firing pin. I am sure with a few more range visits and zeroing in the laser it will be "dead-on." The machete is a Gerber, another great weapon to have is a small machete for slashing up zombies when you need to conserve ammo.

Good shooting 8-)

Good choice . Taurus makes a solid pistol at an affordable price . We seldom have trouble with them .

TX Trinity has one. We did a torture test with her 24/7 and my Sig 2022. Basically we wore them hunting for a week in the desert. Didnt clean them despite snow, sleet, hail, rain and a dust storm. Took them to the range without cleaning them a wreak later, including not removing the magazine. Pulled them from the holsters and fired through the whole mags with no problems.

Not much of a torture test as a real world durability test I suppose.

Bottom line: both did what they were supposed to do.

Yes sir they sure do, I can only say good things about Taurus they have been nothing but good for me. I will always treasure my PT-92 but its showing signs of age so I figured this would be better for range excursions and other activities.

I had a pair of PT145's a while back that ran very well.

Glad I went to Glock, but I really can't say anything bad about Taurus for the money...

That'd only happen if you started talking good about their customer service.

I know someone that has a PRO DS 24/7 and, aside from being a polymer frame and striker-fired (I'm not that big of a fan of those two things), the only real complaint I had about it was the trigger pull. There was too much travel in it for me -- the whole time I was gradually squeezing it back, my mind was saying:

My accuracy was a bit low because of that and also because I haven't spent that much time with it. However, I have seen the owner of this pistol hit targets at ~75yds before. There was a miss or two because they were firing rapidly (and I mean rapidly), but they managed to get three or four out of seven on-target. I consider that okay. Of course, this person only had one firearm that they shot for about three or four years -- they've had a ton of practice and it really reflects in how they shoot this pistol.

Yeah, I wouldn't list Tauruses as 'top-teir' weapons, and they have their shortcommings, but they go 'bang.'

When you need it, 'bang' often carries the day, regardless of polish.

I picked up a 24/7 OSS/DS and so far can only complain about the trigger. It's never had a malfunction and is proving itself to have a spot for occasional carry. Whenever I'm on the water in a boat or kayak the Taurus gets the nod because its cheaper to replace than my other regular carry weapons. It's been surprisingly accurate!

I picked up a 24/7 .40 its done me solid since I got it. Shot my buddies first who's never had an issue with his. I wouldn't put it as a top tier but its rock solid. Mounted a Streamlight TRL3 on mine and it sits in the night stand.

Rock solid and reliable, who wouldn't want that in a fire-arm? Feel free to post a picture here if you want the more the merrier. Congrats on the new fire-arm! :D

I also had a Taurus 24/7 OSS in 9mm. I loved that gun and wish I still had it. I don't even like polymer guns but this gets my vote as best bang for your Buck!

My OSS/DS. Maybe a bit on the vain side, but part of my decision to buy it (other than a great price and great feel) was that it matches my AR! :D

I'll toss a picture on when I get home from the work. Its not my field carry sidearm, but she's been good enough to me for me to trust it as a replacement if needed.

I have several Taurus handguns, but my 2 favorite are the 24/7 OSS .45 and PT-145. I got the 24/7 OSS .45 at Budsgunshop.com for $299.00. I wished I had bought 2 for that price.

When buying a Taurus, is there any way you can visually inspect it to see if it's a piece of shit or is it just luck of the draw?I like the way the 24/7s look.

It seems to mostly be the luck of the draw. I have a PT-845 which is very similar to the 24/7 except it has an external hammer/not striker fired and I only had one issue out of the box. One of my magazines wasn't locking the slide to the rear when empty. I tweaked it a bit and it works fine now. I only have a few hundred rounds through it so far but it has been 100% reliable so far.

My stepdad had a PT-92 for several years and he said it was 100% reliable too. I love Taurus for their price point.

I'm not sure if there is anything you can look for, but I did a bit of research before buying mine.

I originally had eyes on a Kahr .45, but research showed they had a lot of failures on their polymer frames.

Then I looked up the Tauruses, and they had far fewer complaints, none involving breakage. Not bad for half the price

Well, I just paid for a 24/7 OSS in .45 here a couple of weeks ago. Problem is I am still TDY here and since it's out of state for me, I have to wait until I get backhome next week to pick it up fromo my local dealer. :( It's a slightly used tan frame I got for $335 but it's got no spare magazines (ordered a couple up today from Midway), box or anyting other than the pistol and magazine. Not a big loss I suppose and it looks like it's in great condition.
As far as the trigger goes, I haven't had a chance to fire it yet but from what I noticed in the store, it reminded me of the H&K LEM trigger I have on my USP-40C. In SA mode, there is a lot of take-up until the sear is engaged then drops the striker. Cycling the slide, you move the trigger a little bit forward to it's reset position and it's not all that far but if you let it go all the way forward, you are now taking up the slack again. If however the striker drops and the round doesn't fire, a heavier trigger pull to retract the striker against the spring tension until it is released and fires the round. How does that compare to a LEM trigger? Where you see the word "striker" in the description above, strike it and insert the word "hammer" and that's a pretty fair comparison. The differences are that there is a manual safety you can use with the OSS (although you could put a safety lever on an H&K with a LEM trigger if you want) as well as the ability to decock the striker which IIRC, there is no way to modify the LEM trigger to do this.
All-in-all, I am really looking forward to getting back home next week, pick it up and run it through its paces. It's big test, like all the other .45s I have in my collection have tired to do and just didn't quite get there, is to see if it can claim the title of "HK-killer". Over the years I have bought many different .45 ACP pistols to see if there is anything that can outperform my old USP-45F and so far, everything I have tried has come up short so we'll see if the OSS has what it takes to knock the king off his hill. :)

Glad you like it, but no way in hell will anything Taurus EVER beat anything HK.Maybe try a Glock 21 if you're trying to dethrone your HK.
