So my wife sends me this email...

I had to share this with you guys.

This is my irrefutable argument for getting a Kindle:

A kindle provides easy transportation of an entertainment device. It is slim and weighs approx 7.8oz, which is much skinnier than our laptops. Furthermore, battery life is 2 months, which far outlasts either of our laptops. As you know, in the zombie apocalypse, it will be necessary to have entertainment in order to withstand the screams of the zombie hoard outside. My Kindle will provide hours upon hours of entertainment, and will save us precious space. We will not have to carry around tons of heavy books - we will have an entire library in 7.8oz! You can also purchase games for the Kindle Touch, and although it is in black and white, we will nevertheless have the opportunity to keep Ricky and Adam occupied while we are traveling. The Kindle also has audiobooks - and you love audiobooks! You will be able to plug headphones into the kindle and drown out the cries of the hungry hoard while we are huddled inside our safe house. In a pinch, I will be able to use the Kindle as a distraction device by loading up an audiobook and tossing it into a pack of ravenous Zed, allowing us a quick getaway in the other direction. I would miss my Kindle, but if I have to sacrifice it to save our family, I will do so.

Obviously, you can see why the Kindle is a necessary piece of equipment for us to purchase. We must continue to prepare for the end of the world and I think that having things to occupy our brain is just as important as having guns to blow out zombie brains. We can have all this and more for $149.00. I think this is an exceptionally low price considering all the benefits the Kindle provides. Obviously, we have the means at the current time to save up the funds in order to purchase this life-saving device.

Thank you for your consideration of my proposal. I look forward to your response.

I think she's a keeper...and getting a Kindle

So, few points.

First, get the kindle. It's awesome. And at $100, it's affordable, as tech goes. And a wide variety of older works are available for free...if the book is out of copyright, you can get it, free and legal, from any number of places on the net. Many thousands of books.

Second, get a GOOD case, and be sure that it is always used. The kindle screen is fragile. It is easily broken. It needs protection, especially in a rugged outdoor living sort of situation.

Third, there are several solar charging options available specifically for the kindle models, and while they add a bit to the cost, as long as you have the device and a solar charger, you will NEVER run out of reading ability.

LOL

My wife would hand me the Kindle and tell me - "Show me how this works!"

A keeper indeed

Lol :D

and I agree, get it! We got a Nook Color for Christmas from the hubbys mom, and love it. I have converted a TON of info to PDF, which it reads. Our Nook battery lasts about 8 hours, and I'm guessing that is because it's color. But with a little solar or crank charger this will easily still be a viable tool for us Post Bad Stuff.

I bought my wife a Kindle Touch for Christmas and she loves it!

I've even thought about getting one for myself :)

The problem is, I think she figured out how to get anything see wants now. Just relate it to how it will benifit us in the Zombie Apocalypse.

I'd counter with a nook simple touch...cheap, small, light, and easy to jailbreak...I can now do gmail and ZS and kindle books on mine as well as nook books...for audiobooks I'd just get a cheap mp3 player as neither the kindle nor the nook is primarily designed for audio, and it'll kill the batteries quick...

JMHO, YMMV

After reading her email, I don't think it matters whether she puts it in relation to the zombie apocalypse or in terms of warding off the Easter Bunny. She's smarter than you are, TMI. The sooner you come to terms with that irrefutable fact, the better off you'll be. :D

Kindles are indeed awesome. I very much enjoy my two - a DX and a Fire, if you're curious.

That said, the 2 month battery life is wildly optimistic. On a previous DX, I was able to use it for almost 24 hours constantly, flying home from Djibouti. On my current one, battery life is around 8 to 10 hours before needing recharge. The Fire is comparative.

I have a Kindle 3g, and I love it. Great battery life (if the 3g and music is off), lasts me a few weeks of pretty heavy reading (if yours drains fast give amazon a shout. I've heard some have defective batteries that cause them to drain too fast, and they'll replace them), and is really easy to read.

you *could* counter that she can download the Kindle app for her phone for free, that will still work in a PAW situation because the books are downloaded onto your phone the same as with an actual Kindle and then there's no need for the extra $$ OR the need to carry the extra item.

COULD..but I personally love my actual Kindle so...

I forgot to add in my earlier post...

My hubby accidentally left the Nook outside for 3 days...in Oregon...in winter...
Yeah, it rained the whole time it was out there. He came in the house lookin like a whipped dog with a cold drippy Nook. We have a fake leather book style cover for it, but the entire thing was soaked. So we dried it off and hoped for the best. We plugged it in the next day and left it alone for 24 more hours. I turned it on the next day and...it was perfectly fine. I dont know if the Kindle is as durable, but they sure seem similar in constuction.
Anyways, just wanted to add that :)

My wife and two other wives in our circle of friends have kindles and they love them. I honestly think it's the best tech purchase I've ever made for her. Road trips, waiting for appointments, even camping she brings it with her. It's small and fits in her purse and never gets forgotten. Unlike her cell phone. *cough*

The battery charge lasts a hugely long time and they are easy on the eyes. All in all an awesome purchase.

On the other handy, my buddy went for the Kindle Fire and is not as impressed. Sure, he loves the reading on it and all the bells and whistles, but the battery drains so quickly that it doesn't seem practical for a multi day trip without a place to charge it up. He tried swapping his with his wifes black and white and she won't do it. Can't say that I blame her.

I <3 my Fire. Almost the functionality of an iPad, in a format convenient enough to put in a cargo or jacket pocket and carry around - very useful for me at work. And I can read in the dark. The battery life isn't a huge drawback for me, but I wouldn't take it camping, it's true. The Kindle (or DX) I would, with a solar charger.

Two of my kids have Kindles and I have to agree with you. These things are 100% better than handheld game systems for keeping them quietly occupied.

I have the iPad 2. It works great for reading books and as long as the WiFi is turned off and the screen set to med light it will last about 3days with games and reading and about 8-10 hours of watching movies. I know the price is a little steeper but it has proved to be invaluable on long trips for our 5 year old.

First, CLONE HER!!!!

Second, make sure she has a good solid case, like a Pelican, and a solar recharger.

Personally I have a Nook. I have rooted it to run CM7 OS. And added the Nook and Kindle apps. I also added a 32gb micro SD card. It has become part of my BoB system. I bought several ebook survival manuals including the SAS Survival manual and Edible Wild Plants. Next I loaded up maps and satellite images. Lastly I added entertainment books and games. IMHO your mental state is just as important as your physical state in the PAW.

I ordered a solar charger a few days ago. I saw it on a thread here and decided it would work great to keep the Nook and other items charged. Right now I am trying to find a good protective case for it. Would hate to have to lose it because the screen cracked or something. I have a couple of hard copies of survival guides and maps just for that eventuality.
