Zombie School

Postby Spamity Calamity » Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:30 pm

This thread is for people to identify what skillsets they have and specifically, which ones they feel they are confident to teach. Sound off with what you'd be willing to teach and when. I'll go first.

I dont know a lot but I do know a thing or two about arc welding. Id be happy to schedule a class in April to teach others who are interested.

Welding is something I really want to learn!

I have no skills...unless drinking margaritas is a skill. I'll happily teach that class

Computer geek, so while useful pre-PAW, I'm not sure I have anything particularly teachable useful in the PAW. I know how to build barb wire fence.

I'd bring snacks to class :(
The real question is, do you go into work just for the fun of seeing who's already zombified...

Well we got our first Zombie School class! viewtopic.php?f=118&t=90069 Ray Gano will be giving chapter 30 a few lessons in getting started prepping! This is an excellent time for the new folks to get up to speed and living the lifestyle that YOU want, not what others try to dictate for you.

@chirpy Glad to hear that youre interested in welding! I will schedule the class for sometime in April and post it in this thread.

@ fenster Welcome to the forum! We have an expert first aid medic here that goes by the name of Glitch20. I bet we can get him to teach a class if we ask nice enough :).

Spamity, I am all over learning how to weld. Count me in on that event.

And Glitch20, I'd like to ask really nicely that you bring all your medical knowledge with you to any event you can attend. Love to learn what I can.

I'm with Spamity on the newly getting into reloading deal. Now that I have a house to set up a workshop in, I can start that too. Fenster, consider me a candidate for a reloading class.

Probably like most on here, Jack of all Master of none.

Plumbing is my strongest while other stuff around the house I can usually repair, remove, replace, install,. . . you get the point. I don't do carpet or anything that uses a ladder above 10ft. Partly because I hate ladders (I don't mind heights though) and I'm way too fat for them. My thinking on regards to car repair is, if the union guys in Detroit can put a car together then I sure as hell can. If anybody has a big house job or car repair I'm sure that we (ZSC 30) could figure it out. I can't think of the last time I a car to the shop. Just did my sister's 4Runner: struts (PIA), shocks, plugs, fuel filter, fluidS change, replaced lights with HID, replaced wiper motor, and xfer case is next thing to get done. 4X4 has a ton of maintenance.

I guess my skill would be, besides useless in any PAW(zing), customer service. I do customer service classes/seminars for small businesses.

I'm also great at adding my .02 when its really not needed. I seem to have a knack at this

That sounds about right, ?

@spamity -- thanks for the welcome! glad to be here. this zombie school concept was a great idea, and was what prompted me to come out of lurker-dom and become a participant.

@ZAG and any other parties interested in reloading -- there is a bit of homework that you can begin now, if you are so inclined. first, you'll want to get a handle on your budget, and what you want to get out of reloading. for example, most reloaders fit into a few categories:
-I want to shoot a lot, for cheaper than what I'm doing now
-I want to shoot a lot, but am willing to invest extra initially for more through-put
-I want maximum accuracy and consistency, more than what store-bought can provide. through-put is not a concern.

there are many resources on the net that can detail the pros/cons much better than I can. I would suggest the following search terms in google:
best reloading progressive turret single

this thread seems to cover most angles of the discussion nicely.

as for me personally, I started with a Lee progressive kit from Midway USA. it worked great, but I decided I wanted more through-put and upgraded to a Dillon progressive. I got several thousand rounds thru my Lee before selling to a buddy. he has since loaded tens-of-thousands thru it and it's still going strong. I've also been super happy with the Dillon and have zero buyer's remorse over it.

As of lately I have really delved into solar energy, particularly solar generators. I will have my first one complete before the end of the month. I would gladly share anything Ive learned.
my goal is to have my BOT total self sufficient. PS welding class sounds awesome!!!!

@ fenster as someone new to reloading myself, I could also use a reloading class. Think about where/ when you want to set one up.

@jhyatt alternative energy would be very interesting! I would be interested in this as well. You should also consider time/place and get back to me.

Something we could all use would probably be construction related.

  • I would think carpentry for houses (beyond 2x6's hurriedly nailed or screwed across doors & windows!) would be something with a lot of value.
  • Sounds like we've got plumbing covered. Does that include creating /maintaining a manually pumped well?
  • How about low voltage electrical - for the alternative power side? Buying parts and planning the layout is easy. Not shocking the @#%$%# out of myself is the tricky part.

Another big one is Hunting. I confess to knowing diddley squat. I'd really like to learn to hunt wild boar. With the numbers of them here in Texas, and the season essentially being unlimited, I figure this is a great thing to learn. Not just hunting, but processing the game, too. Do we have an expert there?

As for my skills - I have been marketing for 15 years, mostly on the internet. So unless we're trying to sell time-shares to our post-apocalyptic enclave, I cannot imagine that will have much use when SHTF. Negotiation - now that is something I excel at. Add on the art of being an excellent judge of character, and that's a good combo. Being able to detect a con job will most certainly prove useful.

But, in order to negotiate, ideally I should possess something to barter with. So, I have been doing a ton of reading on gardening. I am just about to start putting the info to practical test. Gotta prep the back yard for food generation. Next on my agenda is raising livestock.

If you can give it a month or two I'm sure we could change those out. I've never done them on a Nissan truck before but can't imagine them being that different. Nothing can be worse than that 4Runner, it took nearly 1 hour to do the front brakes on that damn car. So I feel now that if I can work on that Toyota then anything else should be fairly straight forward.

I would think that I have all the tools that would be needed to get them changed out.

I'm a ASE Certified auto mechanic. So if you have any car/truck questions feel free to fire away. I work on 1 ton and down. Don't get too much into the big rigs, other than normal stuff. I'm especially good with electrical. Other skills are handy man type stuff, carpentry, plumbing, etc. I do gunsmithing on Berettas, since those are the only pistols I own. Trigger polish and spring upgrades. Just the minor stuff. Do a lot of shooting so if you're ever in the Waco area and want to shoot hit me up. I just got my first AR15 and man I can't KEEP ammo in that thing.

I've debated the whole reloading thing, but think I'll pass (be interesting to sit in on the class though in case I change my mind down the road). I get so tired of working with my hands day in and day out at work I don't think I'd feel like sitting down at another work bench to reload.

Wish I had joined up in time to know about the intro class. I'd be very interested in that. I JUST got into the whole prepper thing when I decided to build my first bug out bag. Some searching around is what landed me here. All I have is a list and a plan right now. Going to start at the top of my list and work my way down. I'm better prepared for actual zombies than anything I will likely ever have to face.

Hello All. I"ve been into prepping for several years. Followed a link from GlockTalk. S.P.

I've got basic skills all over the place. I've had CPR/First aid training. I'm a Ham Radio Operator. I'm a decent pistol shot. I've been into Solar power for a while and I can work people through the math and the electronics. I've gotten several people started on prepping, BOB/GHB. I've built several raised bed gardens and can estimate size and costs pretty well, as well as lay out square foot gardening inside those beds (which is funny since I don't eat many veggies)

I'm also very interested in Welding and hunting/cleaning of game.

I actually wrote a blog about solar for work. Very basics, I sure don't claim to know it all, but calculating the panel's current requirements is a good first step to a reality check on what solar will and won't do, and what the costs roughly will be

Oh now that you've identified yourself as an expert you HAVE to give a solar class :) . Seriously though think about it and if it's something you think you'd like to do pm me.

Looks like we have another volunteer to give a class for the Zombie School! Taken from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=118&t=93423

That's right. Fenster has graciously agreed to give a FREE introductory pistol course to members of the Zombie Squad. The scope of this course is geared towards those new to handling a pistol and would be an introduction to some fundamental concepts. In my opinion, there is only the fundamentals and anything that is considered "advanced" is really just a honing of the fundamentals.

Now fenster may not be comfortable being called an expert nor am I comfortable with that label as well. However, I do consider myself a good judge of competancy. In my line of work you have to be able to size up a person's competencies pretty quickly or somebody could get hurt. After spending just one afternoon with fenster, I can definately tell that this guy is at a higher level of competancy than others but most importantly, he is patient and enthusiastic to teach others. As such I will be partcipating since I don't really know anything about handling a pistol as will my wife and her friend. So there are three people already in this class. I encourage everybody to take advantage of this opportunity and if you have a significant other that is on the fence about owning a pistol or even just shooting one, this is a GREAT time to bring them out.

It will be at best of the west shooting range in Liberty Hill at 8 am on saturday May 5th. I will be showing up early to make sure we get the tactical bay.
