Then of coarse walk a few more feet and there will be the always available ammo stockpile.

That's why I haven't bought a crowbar. :P

That's it. If I become a billionaire and fund the things I'd *really* like to see (space ships capable of sustaining life long enough to reach other planets, 100% global literacy and preferably 100% understanding of a common language, end to hunger, end to perpetual poverty, etc), then I'll buy shit-tons of ammo and see how the surplus ballistic missile market is, filling the warhead cavity with well-cushioned crates of ammo. Can we agree that Klingon be the international language then? It puts no particular group of people at an advantage, aside from nerds and Trekkies, but those two groups are international.

Sure, it'd be way easier to learn than that Esparanto crap.

Ok, since I'm probably the one who derailed the thread, I'll get it back on topic.

I actually got into an argument with my cousin over the original chambering of the 1911. He swore up and down that the 1911 was originally chambered for 9mm Luger, but I said it was chambered for .45 ACP and that the guns had to be designed around the .45 ACP cartridge. He was adamant that he was right and even went as far as to bet me his .357 Magnum revolver if I was right. A few internet searches, a call to a military historian friend and a week later, I was right.

Did I ever get the revolver my cousin bet me ? Nope. Dude backed out of our bet and hasn't spoken to me since then.

ETA: I did learn that Colt did eventually chamber a 1911 in 9mm, but not until the 1950's. I also learned never to listen to my cousin when it came to firearms again.

I "won" a bet like that over the two .45ACP P 08 Lugers made for US Army Trials (Oh to own one!) that lost out to the 1911. Never saw the money either. I think your cousin was thinking of the BHP, and REALLY screwed up the history.

Nope, my cousin was thinking of the 1911, Czechnology.
Matter of fact, I asked him if he was thinking of the BHP and he said those didn't even count since they were only made in the 1950s.

"Dude, the MPL is a sucky gun. It's low-powered and only holds 32 rounds in the chamber."

The only reason I mention this is because I'm pretty sure the group this guy was in was discussion the realism of these weapons in comparison to their real-life counterparts. I wept on the inside.

DROPPING THE GAME REFERENCES AND SWITCHING TO REAL LIFE MODE:
"The GIs back in World War II used to file off the sears in their M1 Carbines like you got there. That way, they could just stick them into the houses, pull the trigger, and clear it out."
"But wouldn't that mean each pull of the trigger was a mag dump?"
"They used them to clear houses."
"What about an actual engagement where things like accuracy and competence matter?"
"Well, the other guys had Garands and BARs for that."
"Whatever you say, man..."

This coming from one of those guys who knows everything about anything ever made in the history of ever. I once told him, "Yeah, I just got my Edsel back out of the shop" after he asked how it had been going for me. I expected to get back to my work immediately after that since I was in the middle of something.

No.

Twenty minutes of him explaining the history of Edsels (some of which I had told him a few days before), I get back to work. Twenty damned minutes of standing in a hallway, armful of boxes, listening to a man explain to me the features my car has, when it was designed, why it was named "Edsel," and about some guy he knew who collected them... then listed all the different makes of Edsel this guy had, what he did with them, and where he thinks most of them ended up.

At least I was on the clock and getting paid to ignore this guy...
Hi, Todd.

Dogan might be thinking of the Metal Storm gun that can fire up to a couple hundred thousand rounds a minute.

Ok, this is not the stupidest thing I have ever heard but rather have seen. I was at our local range here a couple of years ago with a friend and two tables down from us was a young Male and his Girlfriend with a NIB glock. He would fire a round and the casing would get stuck in the chamber and not eject. This happened for about four rounds. Finally he turns the gun and looks down the barrel (Magazine still in the Weapon. The range master sees this and walks over and has the shooter hand him the weapon. At which time the range master turns the weapon (yep you guessed it magazine still in the weapon and looks down the barrel). Several other shooter witnessing this and my friend and I all yell at them simultaneously. My friend walks over takes the weapon ejects the Magazine locks the slide to the rear. Another shooter lends a cleaning rod to force the fired casing out of the Barrel. The casing vastly over expanded to the chamber size. I take the casing and look at it. Yep you guessed it its a 9mm casing and the gun is clearly stamped .40. We explain why this is a bad thing to the shooter who exclaims that he had bought .40 with the gun but could not get the rounds into the Magazine so he exchanged them for 9mm on the advice of a friend of his.

The next day I was in the local gun store telling this story to the guys behind the counter (they knew who he was had sold him the weapon on Friday afternoon and remembered it well when he brought the ammo back) when one of the local LEO's who also works in the store came in and told them not to sell the guy that I had seen on the range a gun as he was arraigned last Friday on armed robbery chargers but the system had not been updated yet so he might still pass the background check.
Regulators mount up.

No that's the "million RPM" gun, Metalstorm.

ETA: Crap, the monkey beat me to it. And yeah it had adustable ROF, and was completely fucking pointless, unless the designer's goal was to be on a decade's worth of Discovery Channel weapon-related TV shows. I remember reading about that thing in some horrible SOF type magazine in like 1997 and they were already failing @ trying to sell it to the Australian Navy or some other poor service.

It's a great proof of concept, but it's got to be too big to have any real capacity, especially on something like an aircraft where weight/size is a huge issue. Also every subsequent round has a different velocity/trajectory because it has more barrel than the round before it. I could see it as a missile defense platform like a poor-man's CWIS, which is what they were trying to sell it to various Navies as, but it's so awkward... I dunno. Cool idea, limited practical application.
