Last contest we had a horse and a bike. The winner posted a video of the truck ride and even good winter road tips. I posted my truck during the winner 2011 contest and I think Kyle posted his motorcycle. This is kinda old hat so not sure why we need a contest for what anyone could do during some of the contests in the past. The more specific the ideas like....10 item rules...... WW2 to Vietnam area only gear  …or whatever the less ideas and entries will be shown.

On the flip side the more general the rules the harder the administration and judging.

Not to be rude but there is a very narrow mindset here when it comes to mock bug out contests

Seems like the mentality is that you are allowed to use your vehicle to bug out to a location in all of these, but it can not be the center of your bug out plans per se, a base camp etc, you have to leave it & go off on foot elsewheres

I am proposing a bug out contest where the vehicle is the center aspect, instead of humping into some remote location you go there by the vehicle of your choice and do your thing

You still have to use certain skills like the other styles regardless, fire starting, water procurement etc

Either way, those who want to do a vehicle bug out contest can do that & the others do there thing on foot too

Maybe a new thread on that would be best

Actually last time we had a very open mindset. I don't think the horse entry involved any hike and it spend time going over the horse bag ec. It was still counted and judged. I would hate to limit somoeone to just a vehicle or just on foot.

You mean that thread?

Personally, I was saving it for the summer MBOC, and I was going to push for a team event, with failures. This helps keep people from dying. For the spring event, I think a vehicle based contest is a great idea. Especially since spring weather can mean almost anything, no matter where you live in the world.

Sure they did it just fine, Sigboy, but at least for long trips they had a Drakkar! Seriously though, this would be my first MBO, and it sounds like a fun, if not interesting learning experiance.

I was gonna say - ships, horses, and slaves (or rank - jarl/carl/thrall) made it real easy to get your a-frame and rowing chest over the river.

It would be hard to beat the viking A frame tent for viewers choice.

With a vehicle involved you could basically car camp with your BOB or GHB.
I want to officially go on record as not objecting to leaving out the walking part in a SMBO.

I fall into this category, but I still want to pimp a contest idea TacAir mentioned in the chat thread:

TacAir wrote:As an aside, I don't see any entries from Plains folks who would have to shelter without trees (or not very many) I often wonder how well my tarp + car shelter would work.

For the next contest, may I suggest a "stuck in my car" contest - not quite an urban bug out. Many folks carry a GHB or vehicle kit. What would happen if you were stuck for a day or two, staying with the rig because you knew a friend/wrecker/help was on the way and needed to stay with your vehicle....

I know I cannot sleep in my auto, too small. I'm curious as to what folks would do.

How about a Bug Out Contest? You Bug Out, take pictures, post your story on ZS and make it happen between two specified dates. That’s it. Rules? What’s wrong with that one? Everyone wants something different, but most seem to agree that keeping it simple is best. 1 rule is pretty simple.

No scenarios, no fake failures, no intentional handicaps, no required tasks, gear or challenges. Just your Bug Out, as you plan to do it for real. That’s training for real life situations, assuming that we are still trying to advance our knowledge base.

A Bug Out contest such as this would allow everyone to do their own thing, according to their environment and their situation. They could really test their plan, whether it be hiking 20 miles, staying in the motel three towns over, rolling the RV to the state park or sleeping under a bridge down by the river. Test your plan.

And things will go wrong, people will have to adapt and improvise. How many times have you taken a trip and remembered all your shit? What happens when you pile 700 pounds of canned goods on top of your fiberglass SUV? Trying to ride a bicycle with a 60 pound rucksack sounds like a good idea in theory. Shit would happen.

And how about we call it something other than “spring” MBO so that people who aren’t currently having spring don’t feel as thought they can’t compete.

Or we can just live out of our rucks for a couple days again. Just my .02, IMHO, YMMV, etc.

The only real downside is the nature of many plans. I would get into my truck with the BOB and drive to the well stocked BOL. So it would be a short entry unless I get a break down or stop for a Happy Meal. I could walk the distance but couldn't legally sleep off the side of a road to the best of my knowledge and given the forum rules that couldn't be posted.

But I really enjoy reading your threads and reviewing your specific gear..

Even a short post about your truck, BOB contents, basic description of how the road trip to your BOL location went, and use of BOL equipment etc. when you get there would be great a read.

I would much rather read about various situations vs everyone trying to do the same thing.. I honestly just glance over the MBO threads now since they are all the same to me.

Well, it would be UNIQUE, anyway...
Just kidding, I like reading your posts. Tons of useful info, every time.
Regardless of the contest decisions, I'm planning on a LOT more camping this year (never know, the weather may even cooperate this time). I'll just post as entries whatever I do that seems to fit. Or not.

So...in regards to this rule "Death results in immediate disqualification"

I need some clarification, in a group entry, does this apply to all members of the group? If one dies are we still eligible to win?

BTW, I am accepting applications of volunteers for a team entry, I have a pretty solid idea and I believe it is good enough to win, I just need to round out my team and decide if it will be a spring or summer entry. Please PM for further details.

You could use the California Buddy System for camping like we did in diving.
Same ocean, same day.

On a dive boat they would ask you if had a buddy. It should always be a yes.
I said no twice. They gave me a buddy. First one left me and I spent 20 minutes hunting his sorry butt. Second one lost her weight belt and went flying to the top. Caught her and got her belt back on and then she ripped her leg open on some coral so that dive was cut short.
After that I returned to the California Buddy System and said yes.

Count me in! Hopefully I don't get sick and miss 3 weeks of the contest like last time... I still have all of the gear I'd planned on using for the previous trip, so this should be great.

I'm down with this. I really enjoyed seeing everyone's different choices for the WMBO, especially the vastly different AO's we all have, and I know seeing all of that will alter what I do or show in the future.

I need to watch out what I say. Later that night (2am 3/14), I ended up spending the night at the hospital, not sure what was wrong with my grandmother. I spent a few hours in the waiting room, and a few hours out in the van. I took pictures and everything. It was NOT a fun time.

So, where do I post my entry? :?

I'm just a newbie here but I agree. I like the idea of "work your own plan and don't die" contest. I'd like to particpate AND think it would make an interesting read (learning) to see the variety this group would come up with.
