Dead River will be Canceled

Postby Ponyboy314 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:33 am

Thanx to those who supported this endeavor, but inside of the next week, I am going to be pulling Dead River from the market. Sales are going nowhere, so leaving it up will only add to my already considerable frustration.

Take care, and probably catch you on the flip side.

if you don't mind me asking, what kind of advertising have you done besides posting on this forum?

Also I'm with the poster above me. After I bought my HG and Ammo if there was money left in the budget I was going to pick up a copy.

It's still going to be up for a few days more. If you want to still get it, you'll have about a week or better.

And I've posted links to my author's spotlight on all manner of zombie-themed websites, such as zombie webcomics and such...and I keep posting links on Facebook, but these aren't yielding any results. I keep thinking about buying an advertising package from Lulu (that's how you get it on Amazon.com and so on), but they're pretty cost prohibitive.

I've done about what I can when it comes to getting it out there, but it just ain't happening. So things go...but admittedly, it was fun while it lasted. But it topped off at seven sales, and the last one was two and a half weeks ago.

Hope it´s still up next week, i should recieve my first ever Credit Card by then so i´ll be finally able to order it.

Will you keep selling it as a downloadable e-book? The cost to keep it around in that format shouldn´t be high i think....

Also ask Shanna Redwind if it could be incorporated into her "Online Post Apocalyptic Fiction" Lens... http://www.squidoo.com/online-post-apocalyptic-fiction

(as you´ll see down in the comments section, i´ve already mentioned your book there)

I'll be honest, I loved reading it on here, and I'd be willing to buy a copy as well, buy your price point is just too high for me to justify.

And, for the record, I too am an amateur author, and hoping to self publish if I cannot get anything accepted by somebody like Baen or Tor.

But, $11.99 for digital copy is WAY too high. And it's not even available from Amazon as a digital purchase.

Sorry to see this happen, we all (my family) really enjoyed Dead River.

Ok
I just ordered 2 copies.

Come on people, we sit here and read this great stuff, we make comments about how the authors should publish, and when they do no one steps up???
I had planed to do this, and I forgot about it, I'm glad I say this post so I could get mine.

Ponyboy, Your stories are great, and I will scrape up some bucks for any of your other stories you publish

I'm not debating that it's a really good story...

It's the fact that for that price, I can buy two (or more) other ebooks.

If he drops it down to, say, $6.99, then I'd buy it. $4.99 would open up his market a SIGNIFICANT amount. But I'm telling you, at that price point, he's not going to get the number of sales he wants.

I think with today's publishing costs for limited prints this page count in Dead River doesn't lend itself to a $6.99 buy point.
While it's existing price point is on the higher end of the market for similar sized books, it is about right when you consider the fact this isn't a mass-producing (thousands of copies) print run.

Personally I think if you were to keep it as a book for download and move the physical copy to a print on demand method, you might have a more idealistic way to keep this on the market longer.

Just remember pimping is hard, pimping yourself is harder than pimping someone else.
It will be fustrating as hell for you, sales will be slow. Sometimes it pays off sometimes it don't, just stick with it.

I found the book enjoyable even knowing what was coming, I love dead tree copies. I know I put the lulu link up on my Facebook with a recommendation for it. I don't know what it would take for you to get it over onto the Amazon listings but it might be worth it just to cash in on the zombie talk from Walking Dead and the upcoming World War Z.

I for one will still be getting the paperback edition, just leave it up long enough for me to buy it.

To get this thing sold on Amazon.com, it requires a publicity package that runs just shy of $500. Yeah, my jaw dropped, too.

Epub man - write it up in epub and self promote it using KDP/smashwords/lulu.

I assure you I know your frustration but it's a new market. Have you looked into:

pubslush.com

and

inkubate.com?

I personally am on pubslush (The longshores rising), amazon KDP, smashwords, lulu, B&N, etc - and I don't even have an ISBN O_O. I would not recommend pubslush first fyi. If I had to do it again I'd do inkubate first. As it is I'm tied up in a dead end project with pubslush now for 4 months.

Ouch that is steep for many first time folks.
Its basically a gamble.

Personally I would take a $500 dollar hit. But I also know I can recover it in a couple of days just because of my job and hobbies.
I make $500 gambles several times a year buying used broke Jeeps, fix them and resell them. Many times I just break even, but there have been a few gems that got a pretty good cash pay out.

If you don't mind me asking what does the Lulu cost you now to keep it available?

Personally I'm of a mind to gureilla advertise it like mad. Take a single night and hit every forum you can, along with Facebook. Hell make a MySpace for it.
I know many of them are fustrating, but at worst you lose a night.

Heck set up a 'press release' of interview with G.C. the reclusive author of Dead River.

For lulu to sell it on Amazon? Or to sell it on the kindle marketplace?

I want to reiterate that I am as well... I know it may not have sounded like it, but I want you to sell more copies as well. I'm just pointing out what I see as the problem which is preventing you from doing so.

Check into Amazon's KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), you can upload your work as an ebook at relative small cost (perhaps a cover and proper formatting, if you aren't able to do it yourself--and that's assuming you've already had it edited. Editing is the biggest expense). Amazon only takes a percentage off anything you sell. All of my work is sold this way.
