Hiking/Camping/ FIRE?

Postby Trekker04 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 4:55 pm

What's up guys/girls!
I wanted to know who would be interested in doing a camping/hiking trip during the weekend? it doesn't have to be a huge hike just would be nice to get together since the weather is starting to get nicer. I'm open for all ideas and suggestions!

I like the idea, but I don't have many weekends free.

But I don't mind going elsewhere to meet people lol. I live in out in the middle of nowhere, that, and I don't know a whole lot of people so it would be good to meet fellow ZS'ers. I just got out of the military and now I'm a full time student which is different but good lol.

Don't let that stop you. You're each about an hour from Dahlonega, which has plenty of hiking. http://www.dahlonega.org/index.php?opti ... Itemid=102

I say put something together and see who else is willing to join; Dahlonega is just over an hour from downtown Atlanta. I'd go there to hike with y'all if I had the day free. I've been meeting a friend in Cumming to walk a trail once a week, and that's almost an hour from where I live outside of Clarkston.

We could even set up a weekend with some folks facilitating different skills training.

Though not in the beautiful GA mountains, I've been looking at setting something up at Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center in Mansfield (http://www.georgiawildlife.org/node/694). It's east of the metro area, but has a lot of potential in terms of a camp and shoot. It's a DNR facility with ranges, hiking trails, camping, fishing, etc.

There are a few places like this in GA. I think this is the closest to Atlanta. Definitely the closest to me.

I don't have much experience with the place and wanted to give the camping sites and range a once over before offering it up as something for a group activity.

Just thought I'd throw it out there...

My wife and I spent this past Saturday night on Springer Mountain after doing the southern terminus trail. Was windy, thought we would get blown away but we survived. Already a bunch of through hikers heading north.

yeah I was definitely surrounded by at least a dozen if not more thru hikers on monday and tuesday there were 6 tents next to me @black gap shelter, and i probably saw 10 extra people starting the next morning at springer, so its definitely busy busy up there.

We almost stayed at Black Gap, but decided to go on up to Springer. The wind had to be gusting 30+ at times at the top. Cold too! Inaugural test of our Kelty tent and she did well. Pretty crowded...probably 20 people at least.
