Off the wall idea for a sights system...

Postby Dogan » Thu Jan 26, 2012 1:54 pm

Okay, we've all seen people running Eotechs and BUIS'. I just had an idea pop into my head: Have a modified Eotech/clone with the 65/1 reticle where the reticle is etched onto the lens, so that, when your power fails, you still have a circle, and you can flip up your front BUIS and boom, rear pseudo-aperture. I know, it wouldn't work cause of parallax and all that, but still. An idea I though I should share.

It is a good idea, but here is the problem. On an eotech, when you adjust the point of aim, you are adjusting the laser emitter inside it. By changing where that shines on the glass/plasitc, you can adjust the POA. The glass never moves. So if you etched something on it, there would be no way to adjust it to match your point of impact. You might consider using a sharpie or somthing to mark your glass once you have it zerod in if you are worried about it. Or you can just set it up so that your Back Up Iron Sights are useable in case of a power failure. That is why most people get them.

Now, if you were using a regular knid of scope, like a Millett DMS, you would be in a different boat completely. It is a 1-4x variable scope with an illuminated ring and dot reticle. That is etched into the glass. And it works exactly like you described. I use mine like a 1x red dot scope most of the time. But I like being able to crank up the magnification if I need to.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think he wants house the etched glass as the rear iron sight and have a flip up front. that is a neat idea

Already been done, Dogan.

Don't know about this particular version, but the original was not a "true" 1x, more of a 1.1x, so it had some issues. I've heard rumors that the newest version is a true 1x, but I'm not 100% sure of it.

AAaand that is... actually about the same price as an Aimpoint or Eotech... You've aroused my interest. If I ever build a 5.56/7.62 NATO, that will be on top of it, mark my words.

That on top of something like this:
