What canned goods do you stock and enjoy?

For all your pre- and post-PAW food and beverage recipes. Just because it keeps you alive doesn't mean it shouldn't be tasty.

Well having a great maturity level, I still gotta have the Spaghettios and Chef Boyardee Raviolis...

-Spam
-Tuna
-Canned Chicken (best ever)
-Basically any soup
-Assorted veggies especially spinach
-Beans (various types)

I'm never too picky I'll go for what is cheap and has the greatest expiration date. Its all food in one way or another and can keep ya going.

mmmm one of my fav breakfasts is a can of corned beef hash with a couple of sunny side eggs on top, maybe a little shred cheddar  I usually don't have to eat for 14hours after that!

Similar vein, but Trader Joes sells a shelf-stable retort packaged corn beef hash (actually, I think they call it roast beef hash, but whatever) that blows the canned stuff out of the water.

Heinz baked beans (has to be Heinz)
tinned corn
kidney beans
5 bean mix
tomatoes

They're the ones that I always grab to get more of when we're out shopping. I also keep soup on hand but we don't go through it as fast - I get the Big n Chunky kind, but can't remember what brand.

That sir is a bold statement. And unless you would like me to make up, and mutter unflattering things about your Internet persona to my otherwise empty house , you had better back that up... with some directions to find your so called "Better" pouches of hash at a Trader Joes. And no i will not admit to having to google the definition of retort package... I just prefer the descriptor "pouch".

Peanut butter and has no one mentioned Nutella? It is not a classic canned food (more of a jar) but that stuff can go quickly.......

Also, generic (read inexpensive) canned ravioli with the easy pull-tab top is great.

Oh, we've got Nutella  and it's no problem rotating thru it. It's also good for "in-the-basement" Smores (graham crackers, nutella, fluff).

I didn't list my plastic-jar foods, or my glass-jar foods, just the the tin can foods.

I stock more components of meals, than meals-in-a-can. Which is not to say I'm above eating a cold can of corn with a spoon if it's the apocalypse or I'm drunk.

So:

Mexican stuff (La Preferida canned refried beans, refried black beans, and Spanish Rice)
Asian stuff (La Choy straw mushrooms, baby corn, bamboo shoots, and water chestnuts)
Other vegetables (corn, peas, artichoke hearts, pickled beets)
Beans (various kinds but esp. garbanzos/chickpeas for making homemade hummus; we stock 'em dry as well but canned is so much easier)
Stock (College Inn vegetable stock, used for soups but also makes dried grains like quinoa or barley delicious)

Word of warning: avoid canned tamales. They taste like ass. With wax paper in it.

We enjoy a bunch of different canned foods, especially when combined with coupons! Easy & cheap!
Soups, raviolis, PB & J, tuna, spaghetti sauce (ok, that's glass, but it still counts) and yes the delicacy that is known as Nutella.

Between all the posts here, you all have pretty much covered all my favorites except one... While I'm not sure of its nutritional value, I LOVE cranberry sauce! But it has to be without the berries, just the sauce. I'll eat it straight out of the can with a spoon... if the family wants some they have to open a second can, lol.

I'm right there with you on the jellied cranberry sauce...YUM!

I stock a variety of canned veggies, 1 pound jars of peanut butter, baked beans, and today, while shopping, I realized I haven't had a bowl of tomato soup in ages- I'm not much of a soup lover, but I do like my 'mater soup. 6 cans and 2 pounds of oyster crackers later, I'm looking forward to Sunday's dinner.
Canned stews, some canned meats like tuna or ham, and a metric shit ton of coffee.
Crypto mentioned pet food- I usually feed the critters the dry stuff, but I have a case of canned food set aside for the cats, and I'm planning on getting a case for the dog.
And, EVERYTHING gets rotated forward when re-stocking, just like in the stores, as he mentioned. Since I try to buy by the case, this usually just means pulling out the stack, putting the new case in, and then putting the existing stuff on top of it.

side note- we recently had a social worker in the house, as we have our grand daughter living with us. She was impressed with the amount and type of food we have on-hand. We made a real good impression :D

What canned goods do you stock and enjoy?

Postby wee drop o' bush » Sun Jan 22, 2012 6:54 am

Fruit wise I have canned peaches, pineapple, raspberries & cherry pie filling.

There's canned ham, corned beef, sardines & tuna as well.

Then canned rice pudding & custard.

Finally canned marrow fat peas, sweet corn, chickpeas, kidney beans, Heinz baked beans & Napolina chopped tomatoes.
I like to have a constant supply of all these.

Edit: I also like to keep canned soups. Either Heinz or Baxters.

I've tried tinned chilli etc but never liked them.

I like it for chowder and salmon patties. I've got a bunch stocked.

I am also with the cranberry sauce-no-berries crowd. Yum!

Wee Drop, I home can my own chili. Which requires a pressure canner, which don't seem to be manufactured in Europe?

Duo I'd happily can my chilli etc. I wondered about how you 'across the pond' we're able to do so.
I'll have to look into seeing if I can.

pressure cookers- not sure on international shipping practices, but take a look, these are electric: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/brow ... .aspx?c=23 , and there's a few on the page there. Maybe this could help you out some?

I'm pretty sure it needs to be a canner, not a cooker, for safe regular use.
