What canned goods do you stock and enjoy?

Postby KentsOkay » Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:21 pm

Campbell's select soup was on sale, bought a dozen cans. For two people, it's a nice little pile.

Anyway, not going to lie, I think the majority of them are positively delectable. They also tend to have slightly lower sodium then other items + have some actual nutritional value. Mexican Style Tortilla Soup would have to be my favorite.

How about y'all? What stuff in a can do your taste buds suggest?

I love the Progresso Cheesy Chicken Enchilada soup, it's by far the best soup from a can I've had. I stock Korma Fried Sardines, they're the shit. My asian market used to carry them, but now I have to order online, but it's not too big a deal. I just heat a bag of rice and pour the can over it. Awesome.

Just the open and heat kinds, or everything canned? Open and heat is soups of many forms (cream of celery, cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, cream of potato, cheddar cheese soup, tomato, southwestern veggie, beef & barley, split pea & ham, cheesy potato broccoli, chicken&wild rice, french onion) and a couple emergency back up cans of stew (chicken and beef). Also spaghettios & refried beans. Why, yes, I do love soup.

As ingredients for other things : many many forms of tomatoes, and I still don't have enough :gonk:. Corn, green beans, black eyed peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, a few each of carrots, peas, spinach, artichokes, beets, mushroom pieces. My more exotic ingredients (but they make lentils&beans way more yummy) - green chile sauce, green chiles, jalapenos, coconut milk, media crema. Canned meat - tuna, chicken, ham, salmon, a few anchovies and an accidental tin of sardines. I'm out of canned beef because the local meat processor stopped canning it. :(

I think that's it...

ETA: No, wait, I forgot about the pinapple and olives.

The family revolts if I make it from scratch, the barbarians. Well, husband thinks it's ok. The children are barbarians. Possibly I do not make the world's best green chili sauce...

Oh, if we're counting sauce bottles - lots of soy sauce, I cannot face that many pounds of rice without it! And mustard.

Canned tamales and refried beans, I love them. Also canned ‘French cut’ green beans.
While we are on the topic of sauces, I scored a 5 gal bucket of soy sauce to go with my rice and beans.

Okay, I'm looking at my basement canned goods here, and heres what we cycle through fast:

Tuna Cans
Chicken Cans
Tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste
Black Beans
Peanut Butter
Spam
Honey
Preserves
Chili
dehydrated hash browns (no shit they fry up amazingly good)
Indian dinners (tasty bite, plus the other ones from indian stores) in the MRE retort pouches
Cooking oil
Lard

We have a lot more stuff than that, but that stuff goes through faster than anything else.

oh, I forgot to add spices and condiments. I buy big containers of spices, and multi packs of ketchup, mustard, mayo, BBQ, steak sauce, hot sauces, etc etc, and keep all but one down in the basement pantry.

When my kitchen container runs out I just go downstairs to refill, then I have plenty of time to buy replacements. When I do, I rotate stock forward, just like a store.

Also: Pet food is done the same way. newest bag goes in the back, oldest bag in front.

Mandarin oranges, mixed veggies, and french cut green beans and pineapple. I know fresh pineapple is a million times better but I just can't get the pineapple trees to grow in new england.
During the great blizzard of october a local market had cans of chunky soup for 10 cans $10 I keep looking for some one else to have the sale and so far I haven't found it yet.

Chunky chicken noodle soup
Tuna
Tyson chunk chicken
Bush's baked beans

Tuna I go through about two 12 ounce cans a week for lunch and just simple snacking. If not tuna then the chunk chicken for my lunch. Chicken noodle soup is for my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The baked beans I love them I go through a couple of the 8 oz cans a week.

I stock others of course. These though I tend to go though like a starving madman.

I stock quite a few different things, but my favorite is Spaghettio's w/ Meatballs. I am constanly buying it to replace the stuff I've eaten out of the stockpile.

dangit I like the boyardee too. Overstuffed ravs are awesome. I take a can when I go hiking, and keep some cans around for quick snacks/meals.

One of my new favs are the uncle ben 90 second nuke rice pouches. Had a bag of jasmine rice with some 90 sec froz peas with soy and sriracha the other night. Very good. There is a store brand one that is a dirty rice and bean that probably has the sodium needed by a human for a week, but damn it's tasty.

Sardines in mustard... I dunno, but I like them.
