tanning snake skin, THE WRONG WAY.

Postby scurvy » Tue Jan 03, 2012 12:38 pm

first off, I'm not a taxidermist, or any sort of expert on tanning.

secondly, I don't kill snakes out of fear or for pleasure.

Anyway, from time to time I see people kill snakes when I'm fishing in eastern oregon. This was the case year before last, I heard a commotion in the camp next to me and wandered over to see what was going on. A western diamondback had gone through their camp and they had chased it into the sage and killed it by throwing rocks at it... I asked if they wanted me to get rid of it and they said 'absolutely', they were pretty shocked when I lopped off the smashed head and skinned and gutted it in front of them, pitched the guts and head in the river and thanked them for lunch.

When I got home I put the skin in the freezer and forgot about it until last week when I did an overdue cleaning and inventory, thawed it out and started a hat band.

If you want to know the correct way to tan a snake skin, look it up. This is the wrong way to do it.

soaked it in antifreeze, 24 hours:

Image

made a snake board ( pretty simple, as you can see ), rinsed the skin well, got some dental floss and a sewing needle handy:

Image

strung it up, I've found the string works better than nails or staples, it's easier to adjust the pattern in a straight line when stretching:

Image

let it dry for 3 days, I put some "vitamin E" on the flesh side to soften it up ( the kind that comes in the gel caps, basically vit. e, gelatin, and glycerin ) and cut it off the board:

Image

the next thing I do is trim the edges, and glue it to a piece of leather cut to shape with regular old contact cement, press it to cure and slap it on a hat.

Here's one I did about 11 years ago, lasted through sun, wind, rain, hail, etc. outlasted the hat too:

so that's how I do it, the wrong way.

( Please note : THIS IS THE INCORRECT WAY TO TAN A SNAKE SKIN )

If you are using the antifreeze for the glycol content, would brake fluid be better as the concentration is much higher?
I have used brake fluid for rpeserving plant matter but not animal matter.
Hatband has a lot of character, would look great on a rabbit-felt hat/Akubra.

Down the drain works, unless you're on a septic system. antifreeze is biodegradable, and municipal sewer systems break it down.

I usually leave my antifreeze outside for the neighborhood pets to dispose of.

I hope your not being serious about leaving antifreeze out for any kinda of animal. The renal death that these animals go through is extremely painful. They also die a slow agonizing death. I have no problem with the OP use but the need for proper disposal of chemicals is important. JUst think if your neighbors 3 yr old drank the antifreeze on accident how would u feel. Not chastising you we are both adults. But growin. Up in the country ive seen one to many animals drink antifreeze that was left out on accident and going to school for medicine to many kids poisoned. Please reconsider the antifreeze without q bittering agent. Thank you

It went in the same place I put drain cleaner from time to time, if there was a larger amount it would of went in the recycling with the used motor oil and such.

good to know people care about proper disposal of chemicals, I do too.

the local coyote population takes care of the free-range pets, better than most people like.

the dog's head wasn't dipped in antifreeze, that's lime 'kool-aide', a little experiment I did a few years ago. She likes attention and a dog with a green head gets all kinds of attention, people tended to talk directly to her and ask her why her head was green... she liked it, people were less threatened and gave her positive attention. Kind of like a dog with a spiked collar is mean vs. a dog with a bandana is nice (dumb way to judge a dog of course).

She is welcomed and likes to visit a couple local taverns to this day.

I read it as clearly blue.

Sweet snake skin! ...If you found a long enough snake (some need longer than others) could you do a belt? Maybe just affix it to a plain leather belt somehow?

I had a buddy of mine do it wrong, doing it the wrong way. I can't speak of specifics, but when he was done the snake skin had started to deteriorate, and he ended up scrapping the project.

Good to see the method was right, his execution of it is what sucked.
