Custom Kydex Knife Sheath Ideas **Finished Sheath on page 2*

Postby sigboy40 » Sun Jan 01, 2012 2:18 pm

I have decided that I need to have a custom knife sheath made up to hold four items for me.
1)Cold Steel SRK-My original plan was for a larger knife, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I dont need a bigger knife. This is actually the largest knife I own. It's the knife that I used as a field knife in the Army, and has opened more MRE's then I can count.
http://www.coldsteel.com/srk.html
2)Leatherman Wave- By far the handiest of all multitools I have used, I would pick this one over any, perhaps the maybe the Leatherman Micra, which has the best scissors ever, and I seem to use the scissors more then anything else.
http://www.leatherman.com/product/Wave
3)Fire Steel - Know it, love it, carry one, or maybe even two.
4)Spyderco Pocket Stone- Small, lo profile, light weight. What more can you ask for? They make several models, and I prefer the single medium stone. The dual stone is simply one medium and one fine stone glued together.
http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=86

I am looking to have a custom sheath made to hold these items together in a clean, well built sheath. I would prefer it be made out of Kydex, in seperate pieces and not rolled. I wasnt to have grommetts on both sides, that way I can lash it if needed. I believe I would prefer the quick lock attachment method, but i also want a way to attach it to MOLLE. I would like it to ride at least as low as the factory Cold Steel SRK sheath, to clear the hip belt of my pack, or to be mounted on my Sigboy Scout Belt.

Here are the four items I would like on the sheath. If it is too much, I would ditch the stone first.

The layout I am looking for

I think the stone tucked up in the back is the best place to put it.

Any ideas on who I could get to build such a monstrosity?

Any ideas on how to improve upon my ideas?

I've started. It's easy. I really see no reason to pay for kydex.

I thought about, I really did, but I want a very nice, clean sheath, and I think all the levels that I want push this past a entry level project. I also don't want to spend the money on a grommet tool, punches and presses just to build three or four sheaths.

So far I have found, but not contacted:

http://redhillsheaths.com/index.html
http://sharpshootersheaths.com/front.html

The other sites I have looked at are putting out quality that I could do in my garage anyways.

Have you looked at mashed cat: http://www.mashedcat.com/? I haven't ordered anything from them myself (yet), but their stuff looks pretty nice...

You won't hold the leatherman securely unless you get rubber washers to squeeze down for retention, like you have on a good kydex holster or mag carrier. You ought to be able to do that w/ a small drill press (or worse, a hand held drill) and some Chicago Screws and washers from ebay.

I don't recall seeing a leatherman held down w/o a flap over it. Could be there's a reason for that.

6" blade legal to carry where you are?

On your steel; similar to the leatherman retention will be the big deal. It is a very narrow thing to bend kydex around securely.

What about a hybird? Use Kydex as the main bodys of the sheth and leather or heavey cloth for flaps and straps firesteel loop?

I've a mashedcat sheath - solid quality yes. I got it in a bundle but am pretty impressed. It beats the crap out of big knife companies attempts at kydex sheaths with retention.

sigboy - have you thought of something like a fabric pouch on the kydex?

I have no suggestions for who to make the leatherman, but I think you could get good retention with a couple of rubber washers for compression and then mount it hinges down so that you have a detent that catches on the pivot points. Seems like you could get as good of retention on that as you do on a firearm or any other knife.

The firesteel is going to be one of the harder things to find a spot for and it's probably going to need some sort of retention strap unless you file a detent into the handle to grab on to.

I'm thinking you could buy a factory sheath and build off of it without much effort, and I'd think you'd have most of the tools for it. As for grommets, I've done them by hand by starting them with a ball peen and then progressing to a transfer punch to get the final flattening.

IMHO the thing will be huge when done. The leatherman is doable a couple of different ways, the above the easiest, 2nd being a thinner kydex to get a really tight mold. Kind of depends on how you want the draw of it. In order to have mounting areas for the leatherman, flint and stone off the knife your sheath will be wider than the black injection one pictured. I think the attached "bag" idea will be your best function over form for you. Just my $.02

Have you considered Survival Sheaths? That guy does some custom sheath work and your project might be right up his alley.

I like the spyderco because its so thin. At less then 1/8 inch, it should tuck out of the way, and if it does break, life goes on.

I really don't want a big bulky sheath. That's what I'm most concerned about.

Looking at these has given me some ideas, the tek-lol clasp that rotates could work instead of a drop. I like the look of the survival sheaths.

Bayou custom looks good too, I like how they incorporated a Maxpedition pouch onto that, but anybody can do that with the way those pouches mount.

This is also making me consider not using the SRK, but using my custom field knife instead. It's a 5" knife instead of a six. But I also carry it a lot more then the SRK. The SRK hasn't had a lot of miles on it since I left Tue Army over a decade ago.

First off, totally interested in see where this goes.

I have limited hands on with kydex sheaths but have had a couple made by Valhalla Custom Kydex. The fact that I had a more than one piece made means the first one was good to go and was a good customer experience (at least for me). That Valhalla is run by a guy who skulks around here from time to time (odin556 ?) was a plus.

http://www.valhallacustomkydex.com/index.html

GunsUp has a point on the firesteel loop. My simpleminded solution is to just use a piece of shock cord. I do the same for leather firesteel loops for what it's worth. The sheath on the top left is Valhalla's and you can just make out the black shock cord.

The sheath on the top right is not Valhalla's  .

I've been thinking about this idea for a couple of days, I'm going to try to make a kydex sheath with a leatherman pocket, a slot for a saw blade and a small leather loop for a fero rod. The knife is going to be a Mora Military knife. I'll post pics once it's done.

I'm exchanging emails with one maker now, who thinks they can make me what I want, close to the price range I was thinking.

I also changed my main knife to the field knife I use all the time, and I am going to go with the Tek-Lok buckle.

I will fill y'all in the rest of the way when details are finalized and my knives are shipped to him.

I'd be interested to see where this goes.

I make my own holsters and sheaths from Kydex, and have given a hybrid sheath a lot of thought over the past few weeks.

This topic is really relevant to what I'm trying to do right now. I have a scrapyard 511 with a kydex sheath (firesteel loop included). I'm trying to figure out a way to get a sharpening device stashed away with it. I'm not entirely opposed to a nylon pouch, but I really don't like the idea of a cinch bag. I'd rather just have a small, neat little pouch on the flat side of the sheath with a button, or something similar. I'm also trying to decide which sharpening device to go with, and I was thinking the spyderco double stuff, since I already use a sharpmaker, and it seems pretty familiar.

Also made one with a small nylon utility pouch from SpecOps on it holding a mutlitool. It was more like you wanted as it had eyelets on both sides of the sheath, known as pancake style. The advantage there would be that the mutlitool pouch was removable. Unfortunately no pic, but I will make another so I can post a pic.

All of my pieces were shipped to Mashed Cat Outfittershttp://www.mashedcat.com/ yesterday. Eric was very helpful in talking me through what I wanted and what was feasible.
I decided to use my John Roy knife, simply because I use it more. The sheath will have a Tek-Lok buckle, and the multitool should be removable. I was delayed because I had to buy an army sized fire steel, and everybody in the Spokane are only stocks the scout size. Its still up in the air whether or not I get the stone attached. The sheath will be a two piece design, with the buckle up high, behind the handle to allow lower mounting options.

Image
Here is what I sent him, now we just wait and see what I get back.

I'm completely stoked, this should come out to be exactly what I have always wanted in a knife sheath, and if thats the case, the cost wont even be an issue.
