Almost Died

Postby ednemo » Wed Oct 26, 2011 9:23 am

I will try to make this as short as possible. This past Friday the 14th I had off from work as I was working the weekend. Since I was not going be home my wife decided to head home to Pittsburgh to visit family and get real food (we live in Richmond, VA).

At around 10:30 at night I started getting a stabbing pain in my side. I took some Naproxen and it gradually got to the point where I could not breathe without intesnse undescribable pain. I could not stand, sit, or lay down and was instead was reduced to cursing and trying to breathe. At 12:30 in the morning, I managed to make a "call" to my mother. As I couldn't really talk I basically said, "Dying, Pain, Come quick!" And thankfully she did.

When my mother arrived she took a look at me and called for an ambulance. Well, the ambulance arrived, hooked me up with some oxygen and gave me some morfine, and then some more, as my cursing had not ceased.

They stuck me in the ER, took CT scans, X-Rays and blood tests and eventually determined that my right lung was infected in both lobes! They moved me to a room later in the morning where I spent more than a miserable week giving lots of blood, ultrasounds, dealing with blood clots, and constantly coughing up yellow fluid.

I am currently at home, still barely able to walk, sleep, and still coughing up gunk, but feeling a million times better. I am set to go back to work on 11/1.

Now for some explanations. It would seem that my rapid decline was due to my type 2 diabetes being out of control. So, this is my fault. And I as of right now have it under control for the first time in years.

The nursing staff at the hospital was pretty awesome and even when I could barely move or speak, I tried to be as polite as possible. (I was later told I was everyone's favorite patient.)

The doctors seem to spend very little time with patients, with the exception of the one doctor who accused me of having everything from Hepatitus (Becuase I have tattoos) and HIV (because there is just no way possible I could have gotten so sick so fast). I am good on both. Of course that didn't mean a lot of stress while I waited for my results to come back. This woman pissed me off. She also managed to only come in when my wife was getting food or running home to let the dogs out. In fact, if it wasn't for me having to sign papers to test my blood for diseases I would think I have halucinated her. (I halucinated a lot since I slept very little, I would close my eyes a second, talk to doctors or people or whatever, then open them and have them gone. Weird).

I could not conceive my pain being any higher than what I felt. I literally could not function, I could not get enough air to to fill my lung. I was completely at the mercy of life at the moment and it was a very sobering experience. So, besides getting my diabetes under control, I am getting my diet and exercise routine together to get back in "perfect" shape. I have completely given up smoking and drinking and my wife has been cooking all healthy food for me until I can get up and do it myself.

So, while leaving out a week of painful hospital stay, dealing with work and clutching a stuffed Yoda to my chest as I coughed, that is my Story. So, stay healthy, take care of yourself, and when all else fails, bite the bullet and call your mommy as I was told that she probably saved my life.

Image

Here is me in the hospital. Interestingly enough they never made me put on a gown.

I need to find a pic of me midweek. I coughed so hard I got two black eyes and ruptured the blood vessels in my eyes. Yeah, I was not going to be winning any beauty prizes.

Honestly, I got it down to nothing with diet and exercise and when I put weight back on, I didn't take it seriously. I took pills, but never tested my blood and basically had my head in the sand.

That would do it. I have to ask, are you paying attention to it now? I'm sure your doctors gave you an earfull.

Ednemo-
I'm glad you're alive and getting things under control. there's nothing like a near death experience or incredible to put a little perspective on life.
Its amazing how quickly health can deteriorate when the body gets outside its limits during the best of times. It is humbling to think of how badly things could go south if shtf.

I tested as "pre-diabetic" a couple years ago and a couple pounds lighter, and I didn't heed the warnings. I have symptoms of diabetes, but no insurance to have it checked out. I am now starting to eat healthier tho, after a bout with acid reflux a couple weeks back (again undiagnosed). Hopefully I never have to go through that lung crap  Having all my food taste extremely buttery for a week was bad enough

Update:

I have now lost 34 lbs. And it has not been intentional. I developed a serious stomach disorder and am now eating only crackers, bananas, apple sauce and water.

I have been so sick I missed work all last week. My quality of life is at an all time low and I am desperately hoping to at least get to the point where I can work again.

So, once again. If you are coughing, get it checked out. This has been an expensive painful journey that has no end in sight.

Ednemo,
I hope you know that you are killing yourself with the foods you say you are eating. Only the water is good for you.
Are you in ketosis and losing muscle?

Hey, be fair, none of those things is a terrible part of a balanced and much more varied diet. If that's all the OP's been eating there's almost certainly something else wrong. OP, if it's not figured out, keep going back to see them until it is! Devil's always in the details...

Best wishes for getting this all straightened out!

I'm so sorry to hear it. Can you eat yoghurt? It might help your stomach balance if you can. If it's too acidic though it's not going to work. Give it a shot. I hope the docs can work with you and get to the bottom of this. Please try to keep perspective. It's hard to focus on it now, I'm sure, but you did survive a very close call.

My father passed away a few years ago at the age of 46. It was sudden and unexpected. I wish he'd survived. Even if he had some lingering health problems, at least he'd still be here.

Still, I hope for good health for you, and soon!

sorry to hear your still under, and that the ER visit wasnt great

ER doctors are jaded asses, and im friendly and work with them. aside from my own work experiences, had one accuse a friend of mine with both an established and diagnosed heart condition and a family history of heart conditions, accuse them of being a druggie when he showd up mid A fib

Docs spend little time with the general patients. Nurses are the saving angles.

the EMT's round here have a saying goes something like this " want to see the guy in charge? talk to the Doc. Want to see some one who knows what the F*** is going on. Talk to the Nurse"
No one has a sense for the dramatic.

The diet I was talking about was recommended by my doctor to stop my severe diarrhea. Though it is all academic as I was admitted back to the hospital in Wednesday. Seems my first stay in the hospital killed the good bacteria in my system which caused me to get C-dif. So...I am now under quarantine in the hospital. No word on when I am getting out. But hopefully in the next few days.

Thanks for the good thoughts guys! They are treating the c-dif with "flagel" which hasn't worked. Now they are using the "expensive" stuff which comes in a syringe and I have to squirt it in my mouth like a sick puppy. The stuff tastes nasty and it apparently administerred this way because of the awful smell. Hopefully I will be out shortly.

If that's what I think it is (vancomycin?), the liquid form is actually a lot cheaper than the pills (which are shockingly expensive for a generic med), interestingly enough. Whichever med it is, I hope it works for you!

Day 6 of isolation in the hospital. Going stircrazy. Unable to leave a small room feels really clausterphobic.

I got out of the hospital yesterday and am now on the pill form of vanococin which I had to fight with my insurance company to pay for. I am doing much better. The nurses parting words were funny to me, "Stay away from children and old people".

I am feeling much better and per my wife I am going to wait until I am in better health this time before I go back to work. I guess she is sick of me almost dying or just spending time in the hospital. :D

My time in the hospital was much more pleasant this time. Because I had so much trouble eating after losing all of the weight, they started bringing me snacks throughout the day. It was funny because they came in a prescription bag. My first snack was milk and cookies. Prescription milk and cookies! I miss my prescription milk and cookies but regardless am hoping to avoid the hospital from here on out.

Thanks again everyone. :)

Glad to hear you're ok! I have good news for you too, last i heard, the laws changed and milk and cookies were available over the counter. Might just be a rumour, but i'd say check out your local pharmacy or megamart and they might have some.
