Ok Guys,
lets get this thread getting people to know that a good way to use all that stored grain is for brewing your own BEER.

Home Brewing

Postby ScottAW » Mon Dec 05, 2011 3:32 pm

Are you looking for tips and such?

Grow some hops along with your grain.

And buy some equipment now, practice a lot with modern equipment so you'll be better when doing it over a fire.

And looking back in history, beer was once the most popular beverage (lower abv usually) because the beer making process made the most pathogen-free thing there was to drink.

You don't live in NYS do you? My buddy's father keeps bees. If you were anywhere upstate I may be able to help you out with the honey situation.

Scale down the recipe to serve whatever amount of honey you *do* have.

If I'm going to make mead, I'm going to make 5 gallons. I do things right when I brew. :D

Sidenote: the seeds from any type of grass can be used to make beer. Currently around Houston there are hugh stands of ripe turkeyfoot grass (Andropogon gerardii), the seeds of which are considered to be exceptionally good for making beer.

There are other herbs (sweet Gale, mugwort and yarrow) that can be used instead of hops. It is call gruit ;)

Well, you've got Mr. Beer and such that you can get almost anywhere. Alternatively, local and online homebrew supply shops(Midwest Brewing, Northern brewer) typically make their own kits in various levels of simplicity.

I picked up a medium level brewing kit for Christmas. Things have been a bit crazy so it will be this weekend before I get to the brewing. I got it at a local brew shop. Lots of good advice to be had. Look for a local shop first before looking online.

Unfortunately it won't produce much in the way of beer. Grains have to be MALTED prior to use in brewing, otherwise there's very little sugar to extract and poor enzymatic activity.

well this is gonna be my next batch of beer. maybe i'll take some pictures of the steps and stuff i do. This brew is relatively simply so my next next (that would be the scientific term) batch might be from scratch.
here are my ingredients

and and its going to be a West Coast Pale Ale.
if you guys want pictures when I brew the next one let me know.... the hardest part is wanting to start a new brew cause i have to drink all my old brew

I thought that it was the same steps as for wine..

Add material (in this case, grains and whatever else), sugars, proper yeast
Add water
Ferment
Enjoy

Of course, if you have a recipe, all that better for you.

I've made a chokecherry wine with a punch-in-your-face level of alcohol only with a bucket, chokecherries, sugar, and a packet of bread yeast. It was started in august, and it's probably not ready, but a girl's gotta have a drink once in a while.

yah its really similar, as a matter of fact you can use the same equipment for both.
for beer you boil water than remove it from heat add malt bring to a boil again and add ingredients stir for a bit add hops stir. chill till about 80 than add yest and let sit for 2-3 weeks before bottling
