Unfortunately, I can't access my email for anything but reading at the moment. My regular desktop machine is down with a fried video card and motherboard, leaving me with just the laptop and no email "send" access. I should have that fixed in a day or two though.

Many Thanks to Scotticus! He is getting everything set up for us to work within Echolink with the U-NODE conference.

Soon, we want to get everyone working with their rigs in the conferences. This will allow us to move in the direction of becoming a true ZS ARC Chapter.

Well after two failed Echolink attempts, crashed computer on the second, I've got some bugs to work out. Most likely I'll end up using my cellphone next time, wife didn't like me crashing the computer. Time to do some laptop troubleshooting I guess.

I've been interested in HAM radio for a while. I worked at Radio Shack about 10 years ago and I've always seen the benefit of scanners, CB's and HAM radio. I've just haven't invested in it. (I had a CB in my truck back then and used it all the time while rolling down the highway). Today I came across this HAM software. It's free and claims to work quite well. Has anyone used it? if not would an experienced HAM operator look over it and let me know if it sounds like it would work. I don't have any training or much knowledge on the operations.

Ham Radio Software Transceiver

What is so great about this Ham Radio Software Transceiver?

No extra hardware needed, just your PC, a microphone, speakers and you are ready to call CQ on the virtual Ham Radio bands. Once you have installed this Ham Radio Software you will be able to communicate with thousands of Amateur Radio operators and radio enthusiasts from over 200 countries around the world.

Image

Both Voice (Double Sideband) and CW (Morse code) is supported. The software works in Windows, Linux and Mac or any other Java driven system. HamSphere can be used by licensed Amateur Radio operators and unlicensed radio enthusiasts.

Features of the Ham Radio Software Tranceiver

The Ham Radio Software Transmitter virtual output is adjustable between 10 watts and 2.5 kilowatts. HamSphere covers 11 virtual Ham Radio Bands between 160m and 6m. The system does not emit any RF so it is 100% safe to operate in any country. You can also use the built in 48m Broadcast band to create your own shortwave radio station.
Modes: DSB (Double side band modulation) and CW (built in keyer)
Filters: 700hz in CW, 2.4kHz and 3.8 kHz in DSB.
AGC: Fast and slow
6, 10, 11, 15, 17, 20, 30, 40, 48, 80, 160m bands.
Band span: Usable bandwidth for each band is 96 kHz.
Power: Adjustable between 10 to 2.5 kW.
Simulation on/off (Turn off shortwave reality mode and use as a 2m like transceiver)
VFO and memory mode (9 memories)
DX Cluster
Amateur Radio simplified

You probably know what the Amateur Radio hobby normally requires such as big aerials, antenna permits, expensive hardware and an abundance of sun spots. Perhaps you live in a block of flats where Amateur Radio is impossible. Well, this Ham Radio software will get you the real Amateur Radio feeling without those things. You will be able to work that DX country on the other side of the world that you always dreamt of working.

BEar667: It was great hamming with you this evening!
CNix880: I am sorry you were having some technical difficulties.

If anyone is interested in getting Echolink installed and tested, I am more than happy to help! PM me when you are ready to test (or with any questions) and we will get you all setup, so you can join in for our Sunday 7:00 EST Conferences.

SimonSillsAustin: Hamsphere looks like it may be a similar program to Echolink. I have not worked with it yet, so I am not able to give any reviews on it.

Everyone thank you for your patience, this is a Work.In.Progress project. As we are just getting started most of the conferencing is general information and introductions. As we get further along, we can start with regular agendas, topics and formal hosting.

We did have a successful test this evening though. We had 3 hams conferencing on my call sign. BEar667 & I had a random gentleman join us from Ireland, we spoke to him about ZS and Emergency Preparedness. Although I don't think he was a prepper, we did get him thinking about what he needs to get himself prepared for Winter.

Looks like echolink is simply a direct VoIP interface and has nothing to do with connecting a radio. It's more of a peer to peer chat link. If someone doesn't directly answer or call then it's pointless, right? I don't see how it's any more useful than skype.

This (above) is virtual, not real. It's simulated amateur radio using a chat type system.

Also, to address your comment about Echolink... Echolink does indeed "connect to a radio". While it does use a form of VoIP it also allows you to connect up with actual stations and transmit, and vice-versa, usually through linked in repeaters. For example, there's a repeater located about 40 miles from me that's an Echolink node. I can easily contact the repeater using my mobile, or even with my HT if I hook it up to my base antenna. Or... I can sit in my office and connect with it via Echolink on my desktop PC. I've even had the fun of using Echolink to connect with that repeater and chat with some friends, while flying at 35,000 over Kansas, on my way home from a trip to the West Coast, using my laptop and the wi-fi connection aboard the plane. Air mobile operation via Echolink... ya gotta love it! :)

I've tried hamsphere, meh. Echolink is a bit like skype, except that echolink can connect with repeaters, as was pointed out. I enjoy it for the fact that I do not, as of yet have an HF Rig. It gives those that have licenses, but not radios an idea what to expect on the air. Things like iding every ten minutes and such.
