Hand radios with VHF

Postby BlakeS » Fri Oct 14, 2011 1:13 pm

I need some walkie talkies that can also communicate over VHF for work. My boss asked me to find some but I have no Idea, I need 8 of them and they need to be under 1200 . Any ideas?

frequencies are designated by the FCC by use

some are commercial broadcast
some are amateur user
some are family/general
some are designated for business. that's why you see department stores with handi talkies, they have a limited range and they buy a license.

there are specialty shops that sell and program radios.

here is one I saw today on craigslist. (L.A. which is in california)
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/el ... 13120.html

I used to work security at a church, they had their own radios specially programmed for their designated frequency/licence.

using FRS/GMRS/HAM radios for business is a no/no and will get you fined.
the point is that if every business could just use the FRS/GMRS/HAM frequencies/channels then they wouldn't be available for families, hams, etc.

I don't know how the licensing works, you may be able to buy the radio with a license included (like FRS), or you may be able to buy the license as a group package (GMRS)

here is one site that seemed to know it all.

Any used radio shop should be able to hook you up with a pile of old Motorola land mobile business VHF handhelds, and program in the requisite freqs you want, whether they're MURS or marine VHF.

You just need a marine radio??? They sell them for like a hundred bucks at your local sporting goods store.

If you need one that does business band and commercial there is one marine radio made by Vertex that can be programmed with other frequencies. I don't know the model off hand.

Use of Marine band radios ashore requires a special license. You might want to better dfine how & where the radio s will be used - Tug opeeations? Tow boat?

You need to contact a local radio repair and service shop. Check your local Yellow Pages and have someone in the business, who knows what they are doing, get you on the air legally.

I need a marine radio that has walkie talkie functions , so I could talk to my crew on my boat on 2 way walkie talkies then switch to marine band to contact our other crew on the boat.

Were a Mil contract R & D company we don't actually use the marine band till the boat is being loaded into the water or till we are underway testing. I really just need to stay in contact with my crew so we don't have to scream over the boat engine and we need to be able to switch to marine and so we can contact the other vessel

The Standard Horizon HX-370S is a handheld marine radio with 40 extra programmable frequencies for business use and is FCC type accepted for Part 90. So, if your other non marine walki-talkies are VHF the HX-370S will do what you need.

That was the one I was thinking of. Thanks!
Of course the names have changed over the years. Standard became Vertex-standard then became Vertex-Horizon then became Standard-Horizon. Or something like that.

I think the best bet is to use non marine freqs for communicating with the crew. I just thought I'd throw that in there.

Vertex standard still makes radios.

Yes that's what their land mobile division is called but their marine electronics division is called standard horizon at the moment.

I would suggest some GMRS~ general mobile radio service units

not sure just how far offshore you will be but with gmrs you can operate through repeaters to extend your range

MURS would work as well, and not require a license.
