Tiger Valley Bugout Drill

Postby Rockfish Dave » Tue Sep 13, 2011 4:20 pm

I posted a while back when I saw this before.

This is September 24th, 2011. If you register before the week of the event you get the t-shirt, but the real value is doing the event and testing yourself and your gear!

http://www.tigervalley.com/tvciv_bugoutdrill.php

http://www.tigervalley.com/tv_calendar.php

Instructor: TJ Pilling
Duration: 1 Day
Match Fee: $150
Match Description:
The third annual Bug Out Drill covers 15 miles and 30 challenges across rough, wooded terrain. Arrive with a long gun, pistol, pack, and gear to survive a real-life bug out event. Water will be available at multiple points, but no other equipment guidelines will be provided. Participants compete on an individual basis and the event must be covered on foot, carrying all gear, with no bikes, 4-wheelers, donkeys, or hot air balloons allowed.

In last year's event, participants had to climb walls, cut wood, take apart bolts, bandage Tactical Ted, shoot, and purify water just to name a few of the challenges. If you want a true test of you and your equipment with a chance to win great prizes, come and join the competition.

A great meal will be provided after the event.

Participants who pre-register one week prior to the event will receive a Bug Out Drill t-shirt.

I didn't see anything I couldn't or haven't done except for the 15 miles part.

Get an inversion table.

Get an inversion table. I jacked my back and could hardly walk for over 2 months... after using it for 2 weeks I was walking fine, one month later no more numbness or pain. I still use it b/c I never want to be that incompacitated again.

Pretty cheap alternative to try that you can use over and over again... If it does not work you can always sell it on Craigslist

Amazon is where I bought mine! http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_9?field-keywords=inversion+table&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=inversion

Or you could just get 6 dexamethasone shots into your lumbar spine like I did 2 weeks ago.

I've tried inversion tables. Gets rid of the pain and lets me function for everyday stuff, but any sort of rapid/quick movement still puts me down. I've got at least one ruptured disc, and as of the mri before the last back surgery, had 2 others that were bulging quite a bit. Just saw a commercial last night for disk replacement by the Texas Back Institute. I don't want to treat it with meds or shots. I don't want to be dependent on a shot or drugs to function for the rest of my life.

If you can scrounge some more after action reports please post up. This is what I've found:

Be prepared to show any recovered items at any time. Some items will be used as trading pieces along the course for other items.

Lap 1

Challenge 1 - At the 200 yard line the shooter engages a target with 30 rounds. 15 rounds on stationary and 15 on a mover. Shooter then clears their weapon and moves out up the road to the tower. Points on target converted to time.
Challenge 2 - Shooter climbs up the outside of the tower. 5 minutes for every line crossed. -30 min if the shooter enters the tower on the second floor.
Challenge 3 - Shooter and their gear must make it over the wall. -15 min
Challenge 4- Recover red or blue poker chip -15 min
Challenge 5 - Cross water without getting wet. -45 minute for using traverse. -15 min to walk under traverse in the water
Challenge 6 - Recover hearts playing card - 15 min
Challenge 7 - Bride you way out of trouble at the shoot house in the North Bays - 15 min

Be prepared to show any recovered items at any time. Some items will be used as trading pieces along the course for other items.

Lap 2

Challenge 8 - in the shoot house, engage all targets with 1 A-zone hit or two hits anywhere on paper, -5 min for each target neutralized.
Challenge 9 - shooter and their gear must make it over the wall - 15 minutes
Challenge 10 - near the back entrance of the range, there is a sign with numbers on it to the east. Read those numbers - 15
Challenge 11 - recover washer from post - 15 min
Challenge 12 - shooter loads and engages 4 shotgun targets at the lower shoot house. -5 min for each hit.
Challenge 13 - start fire at the designated point near the main building

Be prepared to show any recovered items at any time. Some items will be used as trading pieces along the course for other items.

Challenge 21 - show tourniquet at finish line - 20 min

2009

BO for 2009 was weighted a bit more on the shooting versus the time. If you shot well and also had a good time, you were good, but your time didn't make up as much as it had in previous years. TJ also set it up really well in that he put most of the RO required challenges either in the bays or up in the front of the property. Made it easier for the RO's.

If you haven't considered competing in the BO, you are really missing something. It is a one of a kind event that will change you for life. 15 miles doesn't seem like that much and you shoot good, right? Show up, and take the time to listen to your body, your feet, your gear, who are all screaming for mercy...

Here are the stages for this year.

LAP ONE (7 stages)

S1-200y line, 15 on stationary, 15 on mover. Target was a smaller bowling pin shape. Total time allowed 1minute. +10 minute for each miss
S2- immediately after shooting S1- grabbed (freakin' heavy) dummy and drag for 50feet.
S3- Move from 200Y line and up the road to the south bays where you and your hear climb over 8' wall (30 minute penalty for failure to navigate)
S4- 140 bay, engage 8 IPSC targets with pistol one time (+10 penalty for miss)
S5- move to N bays and engage one target with 18 rounds about 100y away (6 standing, 6 kneeling, 6 prone). Hits outside 8 zone are misses (+10 minutes for each miss
S6- Rope climb in N bays. Use rope to get you and your gear up into the attic. Attic was 8' up. (+30 for failure here)
S7- Move out onto the course and recover keys from bottom of barrel.

LAP 2 (8 stages)

After completing course and going around the S bays, you head back to the range house to get your lap 2 card.

S8- To the tower and climb the wall with the rope (crappiest rope ever). (time bonus for each line crossed on way up, max -50)
S9- South bays, engage IPSC targets again for 1 round this time (any miss is +10)
S10- North bay, engage target prone with 20 rounds.
S11- proceed onto course and go to specified location for playing card. Given Lat and Long
S12- Cut wood. This year it was fence posts and not smaller pine lumber.
S13- retrieve washer from post.
S14- Recored number from end of pipe.
S15- cut rope and retrieve knot

Back through course and around the south bays to the range house for lap three.....

LAP 3 (4 stages)

S16- BO will traverse rope from truck to tower. Rope was a bit more saggy and was difficult.
S17/S18- show firestarting, show first aid, show money.
S21- Back to back area and get piece of chain link fence.
S22- 4 story apartment and tell how many folks are in it.

Things I think you should take but didn't mention: Backpack, bug repellant, small flashlight, gps or compass, note pad and pen, bandanna or shemagh, duct tape wrapped around card, toilet paper, .....

Hmmm I will think more on it and reply again.

Ps I am jealous as hell you are going. Wish I could make it too. I looked at some climbing gear today and a harness. For sure next time.

Yes I think we could rock that thing. Dave told me about it a week ago, but my brother and his fiance are coming to stay with us next weekend so I can't this time.

Would you come down to join us if we do it next year?

Yes, yes it would.

Combine it with a small daypack and you are good to go.

The only question I have about this contest is the water supply. Any info on how that works? I'd assume, because of liability reasons, that you would have the option to obtain water as often as needed and therefore not have to carry a full load of water. The only thing that might happen would be your time keeps running when you have to stop and refill.

Water is supplied at multiple points along the course.

You can safely assume that water will be available at least once per lap, so every five miles. Probably there is more water then that.

I personally would carry one 3l camelbak and a hard container of some sort, this gives you options and allows you to only carry what you need.

I used to have that idea too. Then I realized I was delusional and took the shots. Try some yoga. It seems to be working to give me more flexibility and less painful movement.

Rockfish D, what time are you running it? Do you have anybody to video it, or a camera to video it? Or do you even want it videoed?

I'm thinking I may go down and watch this. Actually I'm pretty sure I am. Anybody want to carpool with me? I can carry three others easily. I'll get the gas too, as I plan on going anyway. I probably won't stay all day, but for quite a while. Long enough to justify driving down to Waco to just watch. I'd like to get an idea of what all is involved and give you guys some info for next year. If anybody has a video camera I'll pick it up and tape the obstacles being negotiated.

Anybody?

ETA - Dave, do you need any other gear? I can bring my stuff and let you see if there's anything you want to borrow.

I am taking a vacation day tomorrow to get it all together. I plan on leaving in the early evening and stay the night in Waco. The show kicks off at 7:30 with the safety brief and competition begins at 8 AM.

I'm going by myself. So no film crew or support.

I don't plan on filming squat, honestly I'll probably stink up the joint, so the less evidence the better. I doubt I'll do a write up, because I'm a lazy deadbeat like that :)

Well, I'll be heading there that morning. I'll shoot you my phone # in a pm and let me know if there ends up being anything you can think of. If I can get a video camera, I'll leave you out. Offer is still open for ride-alongs.
