Medical refresher training

Postby Hammer31 » Sun Aug 07, 2011 5:37 pm

Folks,
During today's meeting it was asked what skill builders would we like to see. Medical training is a popular topic. A lot of us have had various levels of training through the years but unless we use those skills on a regular basis, they atrophy. If you include advances in tools and changing methods, you have a kind of confusing playing field.

What I would like to co-ordinate is a refresher course in first aid with some expert help from the chapter members who are a heck of a lot more current than I. I am not talking field surgery here but my training is so out of date I do not know how to use Quick Clot or similar products. Some of the other members are in the same boat.

What I am proposing is sometime later this year we do a meeting where we go over this stuff. If we can get certifications in this, that would be a bonus.

Anyone interested?

I'm no expert (or any kind of certified trainer), but I've had a little "tactical medicine" training through work. I could share what I know about using turniquets, chest seals, izzy bandages, etc. I'm sure any of the military guys know more than I do though.

Doc Bunny, does that mean that you would be willing to come up with a course outline and teach a group of us on the current methods of providing first aid that may be required in a situation where help may be a long time from coming if at all?

I'd be willing to lend a hand in the teaching/planning side but I cannot be the sole or primary instructor.

Well,

my response is: If you want to be "certified", I have to follow the class materials and charge a fee- but I promise I will make it lower than anything out there. Those of you who work places where you are required to have a first aid and CPR certification, I can square you away. I don't do it to get rich. If you want to learn how to do stuff that is not covered in the official classes then that's something different. If you want I can put something together for care under fire and stuff like that. I am not a tactical medicine expert, but I am a WA state EMT and I have a pretty good understanding of the TCCC guidelines. I have trained my little crew on this stuff, and I am their group medic.

Yes. I will teach you everything I can to save lives, with the understanding that some of this is "for informational purposes only".

MOST interested in this.

First aid
Field medicine (Entry level combat medic stuff)
Basic Sutures
CPR

I'd do either, but I would like to get certified.
Cert course with an informal "info only" class afterwards, priceless.

Out of curiosity, where are most of the folks located?

I can be found in the Stevens Pass area

I am interested in having someone who knows what they're doing teach me what goes into a good first-aid kit, and then teach me the hows and whys of each item in the kit. I recognize that this would probably need to be done in stages, but I'm willing to devote the time to it.

Dang, guess I was not the only person wanting to do something like this. OK, I will PM those whom are current and will post later this week so we can get the ball rolling.

OK, PMs sent to the possible instructors. If anyone is looking for specific subjects, post them here and I will add them to the wish list and see what we can do. I am shooting for November-December here at a location TBD.

If anyone has possible supplies of "training materials" let me know via PM so that can be researched. Thanks.

Hey, sorry for the late post. I just got back from Camp Perry and all that fun stuff earlier in the month, stuff has been hectic.
I'm a current WAARNG 68W Combat Medic, I don't have any supplies but I can lend a hand with instructing or whatever is needed by the guys proctoring this. I don't have combat time yet but a lot of the guys in my unit do, and I've seen a million ways to do things. If I can be of use, feel free to PM or email me. Thanks!

OK folks. Here is kind of the way things are progressing. I have an initial basic aid kit list and once approved by those in the know, I will post it (hopefully in the next 2 weeks). The concept of this kit is to treat boo-boos all the way up to initial treatment for GSWs. Most of us have the basics in some format but the list will get us all on the same level, equipment wise. The proposed class will focus on the current procedures and methods in use today using these items.

OK folks, we have a finalized list for the aid kit. To some this will seem small and under equipped but you can always add to it later. This will be a starting point for training and we can add to it later. Any questions just drop me a line or reply to the post. Do not have a date attached to the training class but I hope to have it soon (within 2 weeks).

The stated purpose of this kit is to handle minor dings all the way up to a GSW at the Snoqualmie Pit (remote location over an hour from medical trauma care). Some of the items in the kit are pricey but we have a few sources to get it 30% off or more so we can turn this thread into a group buy if needed. Most of us probably have most of this stuff in various forms about the house so see what you have and go from there.

First Aid Kit
<snip>

That's got to be a $400+ kit! Those chest seals are $pendy. I carry OLAES bandages instead--much cheaper and more functional, imo. Regardless, I have most of that stuff in my (bulging!) kit. I plan on doing this training if I can fit it around my classes.
