Certs:
NYS EMT-P, ACLS, PALS, BLS, ITLS, AHLS, MICP (Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic, similar to CCEMTP.)

Other courses/training:
ALS Response to HAZMAT Incidents (@ NFA in Emmitsburgh)
Emergency Medical Operations for CBRNE Incidents (@ CDP in Anniston)
The Difficult Airway Course
Tactical Combat Casualty Care course (local tactical training)

I took my NREMT written today and the practical is next month.
Studying for my FP-C sometime in the next couple months. I want a job on a helicopter.

I have been doing EMS a total of 3.5 years. Have gotten all of the above certs and training in the past 2.5.

I guess I buck the trend in that I have much more training than I have personal gear; I don't have anything more than a FAK in my car and a very limited supply of simple trauma stuff and meds in my house. I'd like to put something together but it's been an issue of time/money (too busy training and studying I guess). My take on the issue of people having more gear than they know what to do with (literally) is: whatever. Yes there are legitimate risks to practicing invasive procedures without proper training/experience. But if they try to decompress their buddy's chest and hit an intercostal artery when decompression wasn't even indicated in the first place, fine. Not my buddy and that's one less mouth to feed.

The best rationale for the practice I have seen is "I don't have the training but someone close does so I'm keeping it in case they ever need to use it." I need people like that where I live...

I start training for st John Ambulance on Saturday so I'll soon have some training, qualifications and the chance to use it while volunteering. The only other I have was my st John Ambulance young life savers award that ran out years ago and a little training I did on my door supervisors course.

ALSO
NRP
ACLS/BLS
ATLS
APLS

And in response to one of the above posts, there's no evidence that normal saline is any different from ringers lactate for rehydration or volume expansion. K levels and lactic acidosis might be the only caveats to that. Surgeons like ringers, everyone else likes NS.

Dannus

That was the post of the century. :D

I normally stay out of "medical" sub sections of forums as they like, religion and politics become heated.

My certs are the same as everyone else's. Then again EMS across the states is pretty much the same.

I've held NREMT P for over 20 years. I have no idea why I've given those bastards money every 2 years for going on 22 years now!

Registered Nurse in Ohio and WV - did some time in Pediatric ICU. Loved the kids, hated the nurses.

Looking at NP or PA school now.

My kit - a box of gloves behind the seat of my truck and I think a pocket mask in the junk bag that rides in the passenger seat...(I'd better check on that!)

Medic77 wrote:Unless your a rare exception, a certification does not grant authority to purchase, possess, or use advanced medical equipment. For instance, as a Paramedic I am able to do everything that a Paramedic does while affiliated with an ALS agency AND working directly under the license of my company's physician medical director. The medical director gives my company permission to order advanced supplies and equipment not me personally.

The majority of advanced supplies and equipment people are carrying are not legal unless you have a prescription or written authorization from a physician. Is anyone gonna make a big deal about it? Depends. If your a good, competent Paramedic with a good reputation prob not. If your a whacker with a poor reputation then yeah I'm sure it's only a matter of time until someone report's you.

Some of the stuff I've seen posted quite literally scares me cause I know there is no education or training to back it up. I understand wanting to be self sufficient and prepared in case of a major, major incident where normal day-day help systems are not able to come through but some of the stuff people are carrying can really mess someone up and make them worse off.

Could not have said it better!!!!

Sadly, there are people who are trying to do JUST that. Quite a few of them in fact. I have personally been involved in three cases my agency had to report to state EMS for impersonation of a medical provider. In all three cases , the people were not even remotely trained to the level they claimed, and were only peripherally involved in the local EMS system. Obviously there is a lot more going on than just a desire to help, and I wont play psychologist...but to say that these well meaning people were dangerous is an understatement.

crypto wrote:People who do this professionally never seem to understand the delineation there, and I resent it. I also resent the whacker label being used on these forums.

I can understand your "resentment". Understand that it often goes both ways. I have spent 21 plus years trying to improve my self and the "art" that is paramedicine, and all the time I am faced with well meaning but uneducated or uncaring people who think having your paramedic is simply a merit badge...including those who are paramedics themselves (usually those who are part of an agency whose primary mission is OTHER than medicine, such as some of our local FDs)

So if your feel any resentment or push back, its because those of use who take medicine seriously realize with EVERY PASSSING DAY.. that as much as we learn, we still are only at the tip of the iceberg and the more we learn, the more dangerous poor understanding of medicine is.

I am not a Paragod, or a medicine-elitist. I am speaking looking back over 21 plus years of near misses and "oh shit, how did that happen".

I am NOT saying that there isnt a role for advanced care, just that there is a lot more than meets the eye to this discussion. All I am saying is look at it from the other side of the fence.

Respectfully Submitted...
