Overlanding Vermont Green Mountain National Forest, UPDATED

Postby aa1pr » Wed Aug 24, 2011 8:22 am

Today I had to take a trip over the mountain into Rochester to the Green Mountain National Forest service headquarters. About half way into our journey we came to the top of what is called the Brandon Gap, here is an old photo of the gap:

Like so many times before I wanted to know where that old dirt forest service road at the hair pin turn went & today I had some time to kill and could afford to venture into the area to discover where exactly. It is such a nice area to explore & I hope you enjoy the ride along…So here is my short video that I made from short video clips of our adventure:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga4th3Iiq9w

In the video there are what appears to be roads off from the road(s) we were traveling on, many times these are a simple pull-off where the state has provided a primitive campsite. There are a total of 15 campsites in this area, even though I only spotted six of them. I assume the remaining sites are in the area where the road was washed out & we had no access to. We will have to try this area out in one of my next outdoor camping adventures

The whole off road journey probably consisted of about 15 miles including both ways in & out of the area, back to the main road [route 73]. It was an excellent way to kill an hour exploring this new to me area. Sorry my photos of the map are poor, but I do not know how to convert a PDF into a JPEG so I took a photo of it  I hope you enjoyed the ride along.

Maybe it is not true loverlanding in a sense, but it is exploration. Here is an area I love to travel through & this video [pt1] shows some of Moosalamoo National Recreation Area

You traveled where you have never been before and explored the area=overlanding.

Because it was a short trip perhaps overlanding "lite", but still awesome that you took the time to explore.

Looked like a nice run. :D
