Amateur radio training

Postby mattltm » Sun Jun 12, 2011 3:45 pm

Does anyone fancy gaining their basic amateur radio licence?

I am thinking about putting together a weekend course if any ZSC:010 members would like to have a go.

Anyone up for it?

I keep hearing lots of HAM traffic on CB channel 38 (Like they are using proper call signs and lingo, plus stating their locations to each other) Is there an particular reason for this? Since its only been the last month or so its been happening.

Hams on CB? That is not normal but its not illegal. So long as they are using type approved radios for CB then they can use whatever callsigns they like.

It would be interesting to know the callsigns if you catch any...

Anyone up for it?

I'm interested, subject to availability etc.

I've been on the fringes of HAM for 30 years, it' might be time I actually got a licence to transmit!

We get a lot of CW traffic, or morse, on our HF net here at work - Bearing in mind that legal CB is on 27Mhz and the HF band is 3 - 30 Mhz then its not that odd that high HF freqs are being used by the Ham's...

Back OT, yeah, being a Signals based trade and having a comms background, any kind of training would be good.. and of course, its a good exscuse to meet fellow ZS'ers...

Ha! That's always the way Aeon.

The HAM foundation licence is very easy. A few simple practicals and a multiple choice question paper.

O.k/, 6 members potentially interested. I'll have a chat with the instructor I know and start looking into times/venue/cost.
