From memory:
Rem .35 (x20 green box) $22.88
Rem 30-30 150 grain (x20 green box) 1$15.88

But the .35 has always been there. I've been in to my local Wally's a few times when there has been zero 30-30. Kind of like .40 SW during the ammo glut. Frikkin pallets of that stuff all over the place. It's why I always have 80-100 rounds of 30-30 now.

Yeah there is that. And those look identical to the prices in my AO. Matter of fact, that pretty well represents the price difference across the board. Only exception being the Privi 30-30 which I've seen somewhere online for like $13. Meaning to try it.

I don't think I've ever seen .35 Remington at the Walmarts around me. 30-30 though, they always have a ton of. A few times I've even seen it go on clearance (usually right after hunting season is over). At that point I think it was around $11 a box.

As was mentioned, .40 S&W is the same way. They've always got a ton of that stuff on the shelves. Even when ammo was hard to come by, .40 was readily available. That's actually what made me re-examine .40 S&W. 9mm might have been cheaper, but if I couldn't get my hands on any than it wasn't doing me any good.

Back during the panic, the owner of my local shop told his wife/co-owner to order four cases of .40..... She accidentally punched in "40 cases"..... They had that stuff stacked in all four corners of the store.

Did they announce a sale on Glock 35's the next day? :D

ETA- I remember seeing stacks of .40 at the Hamburg, PA Cabela's as I was buying literally the last box of 9MM defensive ammo, Speer Gold Dots.

I do not like reading things like this.......

Been withholding judgement so far on the post-move guns, but between what I'm seeing in person and this kind of thing........

That's some crazy stuff. Seems like more than one problem..... And unrelated to the shipping and handling.

I will reitterate this: pistol "camp carbine" style (.357/.38) expect to spend $500 and probably more.

I got a Marlin 1894css (from Marlin's, not Remington's factory) in great condition for $595 and still can't believe my luck. I got matching walnut inserts for my GP-100 and consider it one of the sweetest combos.

Yeah. Judging from how hard he says he had to pull on her to cycle ('course, the ringing alarm in his head that means "cease operation of firearm until cause determined" should have been going off at this point), in addition to this, is telling me that the new production people have perhaps not been properly trained as to what the factory torque specs are on Marlin 1894c fasteners........

Although now that I think about it, that was probably just a poorly inletted stock that got pounded on instead of being sent back for rework. Either way, not good.

this seems like the best place to ask this, since i dont want to start a new thread, and you all would be the target crowd anyways (the great lever gun gurus of ZS)

i have become quite enamored with my lever action .22, and have decided i need something of a larger caliber.

the goal of the gun will be to use it as a hog rifle as soon as i get my hunting liscense.

.30/30 would be the most likely caliber, as itd have enough power inside of 100yds, and i can get the federal 150gr and 170gr for around 11 bucks a box so i could afford to practice with it a bit more

been looking at the marlin 336, as i can get one at my place of work for 346 or 399 (have to research into them to try to find out the exact models, as in our systems they both have the same description, yet one is cheaper) and then get my employee discount off the top

anyone have any suggestions?

The Marlin 336 and the Winchester 1894 are the two most popular options. If you are going to run optics, the 336 is the way to go because of its side eject. If you aren't, the '94 is nice as it's a slightly lighter and more svelte design. The '94 went away for a while, but now Winchester has brought it back.....unfortunately at a significantly higher msrp.

I just ordered a 336Y, which is the youth version (short stock, 16" barrel) of the 336. I'll be interested to see how it is when I get it, as there has been some question as to the quality of new Marlins after the Cerberus/Remington takeover.

the only lever ive used other than my .22 was my buddies old 1894. if the new winchesters werent so damn pricy id look into getting one, however, i cant justify spending over a grand on a gun thats gunna be taken through brush and probably dinged up a little bit.

Well frankly, a 336 is damned near impossible to argue with at the price. But see my post above, and/or do a little googling regarding current Marlin build quality. I'm not saying don't buy one. Just be forewarned, and have a really good look at her before you take her home.

That price difference is likely because there are actually several 336 variants currently produced. From the prices, they sound like the 336W (hardwood stock) for 346, and the 336C (Walnut stock) for 399. OR, there is a scope package (cheapo 3-9x40) that is available to some retailers and that sounds about right for the difference in price scoped/unscoped.

There are a couple of other options (336 Deluxe, 336BL, but both retail a fair bit higher)

That appears to be a broken stock due to improper shipping and/or abuse in transit. Any of lever guns of this style will break if lateral force is applied to that area of the stock. Marlin will replace it I a sure.

Lever Guns Talk Thread

Postby austin93906 » Sun Jun 12, 2011 8:56 am

I guess i did a fair bit of rambling in that post. The main question was if anyone had any better suggestions than the 336 or if the 336 would be a good choice for a first lever/hog huntin rifle

There is no better choice than a 336!!
They are THE best levergun for what a levergun is supposed to be. Sorry if anyone see's different! Just because someone found ONE example of a rare factory flaw that will get replaced by Marlin for free on the internet does NOT put in question the thousands upon thousands of Marlin leverguns out there, running for years without fail.

On another note, you guys lied to me...the spike horn is NOT back this year. The new model in the catalog is a fancyed up bandless with a 18" barrel. NOT a chopped down C model with 16" barrel.

It's entirely possible. But what sent me in other directions is that the box showed zero indication of mistreatment. Believe me, I prefer your conclusion!
Additionally, I by no means am suggesting that Marlins shouldn't be bought. All I'm saying is that Marlin is currently in a "transitional period" , and the guns should be looked over carefully upon delivery. Catch any problems at the counter, unlike the dope in the video I linked to.

Go to page 11 of the catalog (linked below) it indicates a 336Y, walnut stock with barrel band, 161/4" barrel.

Well rifle to rifle I prefer the Winchester, but the Marlin is a great rifle. Especialy if you plan to scope it.

Lever Guns Talk Thread

Postby austin93906 » Sun Jun 12, 2011 12:47 pm

I had wanted a winchester, however the only place i can find used ones is in a city where they requred the gun shop to force you to be 21 to even be INSIDE the gun store, so i cant even buy long arms there. However the Big 5 can sell guns as normal. BS if you ask me
