Hammock Camping with my son!

Postby Jamie » Sun Jun 05, 2011 6:01 am

My son and I slept in our hammocks in the woods last night.

We both have HHs, and were loving them last night, with all the mosquitoes in the ADKs right now...I recently treated both hammocks with a permethrin spray, and think that it improved the efficacy of the bug netting by keeping the beasties off...

We both woke up to a loud snorting/huffing noise close to us in the woods around 11:30...along with some branch snapping and tree pushing...my assumption is black bear, as we've had lots roaming our woods lately (raiding the composter and trying to get at the garbage...

It got down to around 40 degrees last night, but we both slept fine...Iused the mss patrol bag, and my son slept in the heavier-weight black bag...we both rocked wooly socks, and Ben slept in a balaclava (I had a fleece skullcap in reserve, but didn't end up needing it)...

We set up the hammocks in a tight "V" form, off of 3 trees, with the heads facing in opposite directions, so that we could see each other and talk easily last night and this morning...

It was all in all a wonderful hang, and we hung out talking in our hammocks this morning for an hour before heading home for breakfast...

{sorry for the cruddy pics, I used my ipod}

One of the best gifts you can give you your son - time together. This gives the catchphrase "hanging out with the kids" a whole new spin.

Thanks for the photos.

Excellent. Looks like a fun trip. Gonna have to get my boys out on a similar trip soon. Thanks for the post and inspiration.
Hoping to bring back common sense to the prepping community.

Did you guys use any bottom insulation, or just the sb's?

I get way too cold without some extra padding. Currently using an extra sb with shock cord tie outs as an underquilt, keeps my butt toasty.

I have a couple of thin shets of polyfoam (packing material stuff) between a double layer hammock for my son, we both use the sb as a top quilt and had no worries on a recent outing. (See Uneekwahns report in the Summer MBO thread)

I sleep with a 1/2 foam pad from my
Butt Tommy neck or a hammock sock made with insultex...
