PROJECT RATTLETRAP: PROJECT COMPLETE!

Postby crypto » Tue May 31, 2011 9:13 pm

I figured that everyone needs one safe queen in their gun cabinet, so I chose this wayward, beat to shit Auto-Ordnance 1911 to make into a project. I got a really good deal on it from another forum member who was going to do the same thing but let a year go by without touching it, so I took it off his hands.

Image

This unfortunate specimen was made by Auto-Ordnance before the 1999 Kahr takeover, as evidenced by the damning "West Hurley" manufacture location:

Image

Now, I know I like to talk smack about these obsolete pieces of shit, and specifically their inability to properly digest modern ammunition, but I am here to tell you that I have anthropological evidence as scribed by a hobo with a goddamned rock that this thing feeds hollowpoints OK: Either that, or that a hobo really likes Harry Potter and felt the need to tell his magazine, which is more likely than a 1911 that feeds hollowpoints.

Image

The first indication that this turd needs a lot of TLC is the sights:

Image
Image

From what I can tell, the original owner melted down both iron sights in order to make one comically large rear one.

My next indication that someone has fucked this thing up is this:

Image
Image

Apparently, not content with using a full-length guide rod to put tension on the pivot link like everyone else who gives a shit about that sort of thing, this asshole decided to DRILL AND TAP THE FUCKING FRAME, and put a set screw in it, to put pressure against the link.

So, what crown jewel of the pivot link world is worth drilling into your goddamned frame to secure?

Image

That one, apparently. :gonk:

The carnage doesnt stop there though, check out what a retard with a Dremel can do to a feed ramp:

Image

And finally, to fill out this shit sandwich, lets take a look at the frame, and the peening that has occurred from this raggedy-ass 1911 chattering on the rails:

Image

AWESOME!

So, anyway, thats my stupid cheap 1911 project. The ZS member I bought it from says it functions alright, but currently fails to extract every few rounds. I've got a box of snap-caps for it, and I'm going to start ordering parts, and removing this breathtakingly stupid set screw.

Expect much more shit-talking from me about 1911's in the near future as I make this thing work properly again.

Love,
Crypto

P.S. I didnt buy this thing because I've had a change of heart about the 1911 platform. I still think its an obsolete piece of shit best left in a museum. It was either this or a Cowboy-LARPing single action revolver. I bought it to confirm my hatred of the platform, the 1911 overclocking community, and Jeff Cooper. This pistol is everything thats wrong with all of them.

Tag for Kaboom.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

But it actually does just need a new extractor to function okay.
And no, I didn't do that to it. I bought it that way.

Why would you buy an Auto Ordinance? Of all the examples of the 1911...

*sigh*

Because I'm posting pics tonight...

Ed Brown and my Colt Series 70. Ed is the most accurate pistol in my battery, bar none, and I've got a few pistols to compare it to. The Colt is a close second, but it's been blessed with National Match bushing and Barrel and a few other tweaks. I should take another picture of the 70, it finally has a series 70 trigger on it, the bastard who had it before me put a series 80 trigger in it and it was abysmal. Much better now with the proper trigger.
Image

here's the others. A Springfield Ultra Carry, Colt Lightweight Commander, Ed Brown, Colt Delta Elite, and the pride of my 1911 stable... a Norinco 1911A1 I scored for $200. Seriously though, I like shooting the Norinco because it's a basic, no frills, 1911A1.

Don't hate. Embrace the history, the nuances, the powerful magic that can be had in the 1911 platform.

I bet you hate Revolvers too.

I'm a lefty, the history and nuances are that JMB hated my face and didnt want me to have a usable pistol.

Nah, my most accurate handgun is a 1970's pinned model 67 with a trigger that breaks like glass, I love it.

I've got a taurus 7" .357 thats had about 15K rounds through it and still runs like a top.

And I have a LCR thats in my pocket right now.

I'm cool with DA revolvers, within reason, and lefties cant reload those worth a damn either.

Also, a DA revolver trigger makes the Glock trigger positively crisp by comparison, which is part of how I got so comfy on a glock with a stock trigger and gloves.

Come to the pistol class, bring a revolver as well, I promise to show you how to load that sum-bitch even left handed.

A M67... Nice. I'll bet the bluing is deep, the grips are wood, and you have a leather holster for it.

Don't tell me that you don't have all that, I just want to imagine it.

The wheelguns are hit and miss. This one is definitely a hit. I got this used from PistolPete, who can attest to the round count, as they all happened on his shift with it. The trigger is /almost/ as good as the smith, but its worn smooth. I'll bring it to docs pistol class too.

You could further modify it by slamming on with with a mallet.
Wow, I don't get the set screw 'fix'.
Anyway, looks fixable with about $1500 worth of custom work. That's about what it takes to make the 1911 run right.
