AK DILEMMA(which one)

Postby kntckyjon » Mon May 23, 2011 9:18 am

I have decided to get a decent AK.I really want a Uncut MAK90.
I can only find a Milled receiver one and they are wanting $800 for it.
It is like new says he has had it over 20yrs put maybe 50rds thru it.
Then I would have to spend the $140 to get a stock from Ironwoods.
I am trying to decide rather to just spend alittle more and get one of the following
a less expensive Arsenal
a Red Jacket (even though they are just Saigas)
or if there is a company that I am missing please let me know.

Any of those AKs are going to be good. You pay a premium for Red Jacket, but it's not just an AK/saiga... it's a very well-built warrantied one.

You could also have a kit built by rifle dynamic or possibly krebs? There are a lot of quality AK builders out there. Another option is getting a WASR and having it reworked by Rifle Dynamics. It will cost about the same in the end as an Arsenal but you can have it customized to fit you. What is the main purpose of the rifle?

Just want a plain jane AK. No folding stock or plastic.
I decided I wanted to go all 7.62x39 and want a nice rifle.
Thanks for that one option I had no idea about them.

For what it's worth, if I was buying an AK it'd be one of these. Solid side folding stocks, Russian parts, it's made of sexy and win.

Also a very nice rifle. I've got a thing for solid side-folders, for some reason. Depending on your build you might want to go with a NATO-length buttstock instead of the Warsaw Pact length buttstock on that one (the NATO is longer).

Did not know that. Thanks!
I have never handle a solid folding stock.
Can they be switched out?

You can switch a solid stock for a folding stock or vice versa; Dave_M and a couple other people would be able to provide details on how much work it is, it depends on the type of stock and receiver. I'm not familiar enough with AK gunsmithing to say.

I think I am going to pass on that milled MAK.
I had him down to trading a g19 and 400 but, that is around 850.

Get a new VZ-58 from Czechmate. I know they don't take AK mags, they take VZ-58 mags, but they shoot the same round, and if you order one from them, you can get both a side folding and a solid stock. Just a suggestion.

Going to stick with normal AK mags.
I have a couple of AK variants, just not one with a normal stock.
Also, have a really nice SKS-M w/ the monte carlo stock.
Want a nice AK to learn and keep.

I would start with a basic WASR, refinish the stock and then send it to Rifle Dynamics to have it fine tuned.

Definitely going to look into that Dynamics.
Not sure about the WASR part.

Hey everyone.. have not posted here in ages but here goes..

As someone who used to work part time for Rifle Dynamics, I can tell you that the WASR is a good gun once we go over it and fix what century screws up. Its worth it if you have one already to send it in. We can also build you pretty much anything you want in the AK world as well.

My WASR Was pretty decent before I worked for RD, once I re-did it its a MUCH more accurate and better AK. I would not be worried about taking it into a SHTF situation any day now.

What do you want the AK for? Shooting groups, hd, or a range toy? I have a wasr and i can hit bowling pins most
of the time if I do my part. It's not my arsenal but its also $425. Spend the extra savings on a case of ammo, mags and range time. Just make sure the sights are straight.

What is your average turn time on rifles these days? I was thinking of sending my Arsenal in for the basic package.

Being new... I cant really quote a time.. however we are getting the guns out quicker now that we have extra help :) I would guesstimate a few months anywhere from 4 to 6.

of course there is always gunbroker arsenal and so on.

Just saiga? brother a saiga is made in russia... just convert it no big deal.

now if you want to be slicker than a dick in a prime peice of pussy and get hot sex accesories made for an ak go here

A decent ak is the one in your hand that you can shoot to the best of your ability... wether its hungarian chinese, bulgarian, russian, polish, romanian, egyptian,

I am curious if you have other Ak platforms what is so "undecent" about them? I have 5 myself and not one is not decent in fact most are great if you take the time to run them like a raped ape on a decent range and do what sarah palin says and drill baby drill.

But in the end I will add this buy what you want after research... if you dont buy what you want you will inevetibly buy what you want in the end and pay twice once for you mistake of settling for less and once to get what you heart yearns for.

Does anyone have any experience with Red Jacket?

I've been eyeballing this one
http://www.redjacketfirearms.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=40&category_id=3&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=4

A grand is a tad steep, but I've got a bonus coming from work.

I think Bearcat ran a Red Jacket in 5.45 at May Milcopp, it seamed OK.

I love the 2 Arsenal SGL21's I bought to replace my Century guns, never going back...

ETA: brand new SGL21's for sale
