Day to day I wear Hi Tech Magnums in black as they go with my office clothes.

On my own time in I will either go with my Shoe Goo resoled moccassins or my Rocky Silent Sneakers for woods wear, on the basis of doing as little damage to the ground as possible.

As a tracker I am perhaps over aware of how destructive a path the lugged soles leave in the world, but I only have to spend a moment looking at wilderness erosion to choose to forego the "my thick, sharp toothed foot armor will let me go anywhere" type boots.

Fine if they stay on the already compacted and dead trails, but a crime when they head into the bush, and even worse with the additional weight of gear and the tendancy to rip or chop anything that dares to impede their path.

Desert Storm era Army boots I got in trade for a twelve-pack of Newcastle in 1999. I know, they need a shine. I used these when I was a field archaeologist before I switched to Red Wings. I liked my Wings a lot, but they didn't hold up to my abuse the way these have. I would, however, like to get some Red Wing Gentleman's Travelers for the office:

Walked into REI in March 2005 with $140 and my rebate check saying "Help me with some boots please!!"

Here they are on my feet in some water:

Been going strong for 4 years and not looking like I'll need new ones for more years to come. Kinda' wish there was some rubber over the toes but oh well, I'm still alive.

Why do so many of you guys wear boots like these?

Because I bought them for work(aka spent a lot of money on them), and they're good comfortable boots. The only other normal footwear I own at the moment are a pair of keen sandals (which I try to keep as 'boat shoes', but I've been wearing them like tennis shoes these days) and a pair of flip flops. So whenever I need more than sandals, or war sandals, I have to jump all the way up to full-height boots. Not too bad, I leave them untied most of the time, unless I'm working or hiking.

I own a lot of footwear. Ill list the boots only.

I have 2 pairs combat boots and 1 pair desert boots that were Army issue, the combats need resoling.

Ive got OTB Thors, Bushmasters, and Desert Lites. All light and breathable, no goretex. I believe they are 6', 6', and 8' respectively.

I have Keen Pyrenees, full grain leather with their proprietary waterproof/breathable membrane.

Vasque something or other light hikers, xcr goretex, 6 inch, synthetic uppers.

Last but not least, I have Asolo TPS 535, the non-goretex ones. Full grain leather heavy duty backpacker boot type. These would be my ZPAW footwear if I could only have one pair chosen from what I already own.

I didn't realize they were the steel toed models when I ordered them (the "ST" stands for "steel toe" derrrrr). Still very good boots.

Just ordered these from Sgt. Grit's. I get a $200 shoe allowance from work, so I'll still havesome coin leftover to throw towards a pair of the Converse combat boots. Funny I could never find steel toe combat boots when I was in the Corps, but now I have no problem sniffing them out.

I'm wearing a pair of Thorogood Hellfires.

Image

They're my duty/station boots for work, and I got a slick deal on them. I tend to wear them just about every day because they're comfortable and I'm just so used to wearing them. They're damn near indestructible and offer good comfort when walking about. My only gripe is that they aren't comfortable if you're actually hiking, ie off of pavement...I could see there being huge potential for blisters and the like.

When I worked forestry I always wore stuff like White's or Hathorne's, but I don't know if those are really good for extended periods of hiking...I might try a more dedicated hiking boot and see how they stand up.

I much prefer standard no-nonsense boots, which to me means no speedlaces, eyelets that can be pulled out, weird materials, etc. The ideal, again for me, is the Chuka-style &/or Clark's Desert Boot, followed by the older style of Navy Boondocker.

Currently everyday wear are tan Chuka-style Sketchers, but I've also got some military surplus boondockers I'm breaking in. For winter I've got wool-lined all-leather Jacks.

I'd heard SF used them with great success in A-stan, where lesser boots go to die...

Current choice for everyday use is a pair of Danner Acadias. Others are Haix Airpower and issue military boots Jalas M91 (used almost exclusively when a pair of shiny ones is needed).

I have a pair of these that I currently wear for work. The soles are cracking and I need to replace them, but they don't appear to be made anymore. I have been considering either a pair of black tanker boots or a pair of 8-inch Magnums. Anyone care to recommend one over the other?

I require footwear that will keep my feet dry and/or out of whatever kind of street crud I might step in, support a moderate amount of urban walking, and offer enough ankle support that I don't develop cankles from sitting in a taxi for 10-13 hours five nights a week.

Nike SFB's when I'm in uniform. So light, so comfy. Easy to run fast in. But a little bit chilly in the snow and actually kinda slippery on smooth, wet surfaces.

For the last few years, I've worn Berghaus Explorer Trek GTX , Gore-Tex boots.

These light in weight boots exceeded my expectations for waterproofing, temperature control, comfort, support, strength and durability, my feet and I love 'em! Image

+1 dogbane & Towanda,
THESE.
Image
I wear them in place of dress shoes at work so I keep them polished.
Also put a few nails in the sole to retard wear.
this is my third pair, they last me 5 to 7yrs of daily use.

My duty boots are 5.11 Tactical ATAC Side Zips, and my everyday civilian boots are Wolverine Hudson, Steel Toe Hikers . I'd recommend both of them.

Yup. I use these (or rather, the German Army Bergstiefel, which is the .mil version) for all my outdoor activity, for two reasons:
1) They are damn good boots.
2) If they need a new sole or give out altogether, I can trade them in for new ones at zero cost... who says the Army doesn't have it's perks?
