Hello all, I've got spring break coming soon, and am planning on taking a gentle paddle trip during the week of April 18 to 22, probably for 1-2 nights...

I was planning on this as a solo outing to get my head in shape for the rest of the school year, but would be happy for some company on the trip...

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie ... f&t=h&z=13 - my Gmap of the trip...

An easier river trip, this is one I am keen to do in April when miles of it will be over flooded plains of swamp maples....there are lots of great places to stop and explore and camp along the way, including a high probability of hammock setups over water in flooded plains of Silver Maples if we want to for lunch or overnight...

http://adirondackexplorer.org/travel-ce ... he-stream/ - Adirondack Explorer article about this trip!

Image

If people have an interest, but lack gear, I have a canoe and a kayak (with paddles and pfds) that I could loan out for the trip...this trip starts and ends a few miles from my house...there aren't any portages, we can essentially drop the boats off of the roof-racks into the water, and then lift them from the water back onto the roof racks at the bottom of the trip...

If you're interested, post the days in that week (4/18 to 4/22) that would work for you, and we'll work something out...my schedule is open...

Looking for someone to fill a seat in the Red Hippo Canoe for this one.

Sounds good, I could drive out late on the 17th, and drive home either on the 19th or possibly the 20th. Will have to see.

ETA: I require dry land to sleep on as I don't have a hammock (yet).

I'll get over there on Thursday, and post exact GPS coords for the meetup spot...

I'm getting back late in the afternoon of the 17th, but could certainly be ready to meet any comers on the morning of the 18th, do the necessary shuttling and last-minute beer purchases, and aim for a "Paddles Wet" time of 11 or noon...

Rush2112: I could give you coords for a nice spot to camp, right next to the boatlaunch for this trip, for the night of the 17th if you want...

Depending on how people want to play this, it can pretty easily be a 1 or 2 night trip, and I'd be good with either...again, this trip won't have any portages (unless there's a beaver dam to haul the boats over in the Stony Creek portion of the trip), and we'll be paddling with the current along the Raquette River all the way to the takeout...there are some nice places to pull up and explore, and a side-trip into Follensby Pond, a recent acquisition by the Nature Conservancy (read this article about the pond for a bit of it's history/significance)

I'm looking forward to a fun and mellow paddle/float on this pretty river, long before it gets the heavier traffic it will see in the warmer months...

The temps could range from below freezing up into the 60s, the good news being that we shouldn't have to worry about black flies yet...

Regional staff meeting has been changes from the 15th to the 19th, so I won't be making this one. I'll be soloing the weekend of the 16th and I'll post some pics.

Enjoy the paddle

I went out to scout the coords today, and there's still ice on all of the lakes and ponds...the river should be fine, but cold...winter is lasting a long time this year...

Looks like I'll be jealously sitting this one out. The hammocks-over-water idea sounds like fun, but be careful with tree selection. Pulling a Timber over ice-cold water probably wouldn't end well unless it's very shallow.

As I understand it, the hanging over the water bit is optional if that's the only thing keeping you from going. I'll be ground-dwelling as well.

No, it's the fact that I'm blowing off the preceding Friday (and part of Thursday) to volunteer at Notacon and run their ham radio special event station for the weekend. I'll be pretty thoroughly dead come Monday, and will probably have a bit of work to make up anyway.

Hanging over the water sounds like an entertaining challenge (mostly entry/exit between a hammock and a canoe), and I just got myself one of those $20 GT ultralight hammocks that I need to try, so I'd totally do this if not for the timing.

My thinking is that it might be cool to hang over water for a lunch, but that overnight would be a bummer, because I would almost certainly forget where I was when I woke up for my midnight pee, and end up swimming in 35F water...

Parking Coordinates: N 44.223, W074.315

The land to the South and East of the creek (about 150 yards SE from the given coords) is state forest preserve, and is camping legal for anyone arriving the night before...

We can meet here and dump our gear at this end of the trip, shuttle one of the vehicles down to the end of the trip, then drive back up here to launch...if it ends up that nobody makes it for the trip, then I would likely just paddle down through the swamp and river and then back up to the launch site...

Count me as a maybe at this point. I've got to go over my funds and see if it's doable.

Hey Rush,

Don't sweat it if it's tight, we can plan it further ahead for next year, with my having done the scout work this year.

I'm feeling a bit cooped up these days, so a nice paddle and campout sounds really good right about now.

Excellent...I'll be in and out of e-communication for much of the next week, but I'll check in at least once or twice...

I would have loved to come, but I don't get back to the states until the afternoon of the 18th...

Bad timing on my part I guess.

The ice, astoundingly, hasn't gone out on the trip route yet...so I have to postpone the trip until more warmth has hit the adks...

Bummer!
