Anyone familiar with the Clansman PRC 349?

Typically, I think I may have more radio than I know what to do with, which is likely as I don't really know anything at all about radios. I don't know if it's legal to use, I'm not interested in breaking any laws.

This isn't mine, but it's the exact setup I have.

I know the radio works, I can hear static when I power it on the "static" mode and I can sort of hear myself in the "talk" or "whisper" modes.

I haven't the faintest idea how to dial, what I imagine, is the frequency on the three knobs:
Mhz (37,38,39,40,41,42,43,44,45,46)
100Khz (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) or
Khz (0, 25,50, 75)

An intra-section level portable VHF FM transceiver. Built by Racal BCC. RF power output is 0.25 watts. Units supplied to the British Army operate in the 37 - 46.975 MHz range, voice (FM) transmission Mode. A high power (2 Watts) output version was also available and any 10 MHz block in the range 30 - 76 MHz could be supplied. Worn in a holster on the chest or back. The PRC349 was added to the Clansman family in 1972.

The closest ham band is 6 meters - 50 to 54 Mhz or 10 meters, 28 to 29.7.
So, legal use on the hams bands is out. The high power unit would have allowed use on the 6 meter band.

Nice rig, don't transmit, even .25 of a watt can cause interfenence.

The Clansman PRC-349 is a modern synthesised VHF/FM radio Frequency range is 37 to 46.95 MHz in 25 KHz spacing providing 400 possible channels and a maximum output power of 1 Watt. Frequency selection by 3 small thumb wheel knobs on the side of the radio which can be operated even while the operator is wearing Arctic mittens, or in the dark by counting clicks from the end-stops. Has Clansman compatible squelch and whisper modes of operation with battery saving function. Operates from 12 VDC using 10* AA batteries inserted inside the battery cassette.

The Racal Clansman PRC-349 / RT-349 is a VHF/FM transceiver intended for personal communication in combat conditions. The radio is designed to be fully compatible with the existing range of Clansman VHF equipment.
The radio can be mounted on the shoulder, chest or back with adjustable quick release holster. It can also be carried inside a back pack or pocket of a combat jacket...... copied from Army Radio Sales Co. a UK based retailer

as for the legality it is based on a freq range so you might want to look on the FCC website to find what is legal without a operators license. When SHTF i dont think the FCC is going to care what range you transmit on.

due to the frequency there is no legal way to use them. they are hardly modern radio's They date back to the early 70s. Most are 1/4 watt radios. with very short range. The high power models are rare and only 2 watts. The higher powered models could cover up to 76mhz making them at least usable on a few 6m ham band frequencies..

I have seen folks change the IF crystal so they could get them in the 6 meter (50MHZ) band. So I am sure there must be info out there for that..somewhere.
