Congrats on the snowshoes. A walking aid is a great idea. You could use ski poles, but I prefer a 6' section of 1" dowel from the hardware store. Coyotes can be an issue here, and I don't take firearms, so my staff serves double-duty as a defensive tool.

Yeah coyotes problem around here too . I saw one last year "walking " the local deer family and then another one here stareing down the (not so bright) mutt we have living here .I think if I hadn't come out in the woods to see what the heck he was barking at he may have been a coyote snack . I know of 3 families around here that have lost their little lap dogs within the last couple of years . Luckily I can take 22 with me so really I should get a coyote call to take with , although they look a little too dog like to shoot . If my miniture dachshund would disapear Id feel differently for sure tho .

Oh by the way , I stopped at Goodwill and bought a real nice pair of virgin wool pants for $4.50 :)

well my plans have changed. the wife has been fighting off a chest cold for two weeks, and its now got the best of her. shes now on a nebulizer and meds... and shes 8 months pregnant now, sooo i decided to just do a hike / hunt tommorow, and hold off my overnight trip untill next week.

anyways i would feel guilty leaving her this way, and if something should happen to her and the baby i will be 3.5 - 4 hrs from home with the hike out of the woods and the drive home.

Totally prudent and responsible. Too bad it's postponed, but at least it's not cancelled. Good move. I hope she feels better soon.

All loaded up and ready for tomorrow. Plans have changed, going about 3x as far as I was planning due to the rain making the creek more favorable for kayaking.
I'm taking my B.O.B, parcelled out to make more of it fit in the available space inside the kayak, with the bag itself containing things that may get wet on top, still in a large trash bag. Taking a 10.5 Axis Dagger kayak, rented from the University rec center. That is my favorite place on campus, only $25 for the kayak, vest, splash skirt, helmet, and paddle from today (Friday) till Monday. The vest itself cost that much at least.

I'll be making a formal post with details and pictures most likely Sunday night, if I'm up to it. In for a couple days of fun.

Plenty of chances to camp if she's on nebulizer its good to stick close .
I was afraid I'd have to cancel cause I just had both big toenails removed . Beat up from a lifetime of construction and no steel toed boots . But right now they feel fine (vicoden might be helping)

F*ck kayaks right now. F*ck the rental center.

Ended up having to call search and rescue, hit a log flipped, lost my paddle and helmet, nearly froze to death. Search and rescue guys said that the rental center has sent beginner kayakers out there before knowingly, and that it is definately not a beginner level route. I'm still going camping tonight, just not kayaking. Lost my canteens and my helmet, found the paddle downriver. not deterred from kayaking completely, just for now. Getting more clothes and heading out again. Just needed a little ventilation time.

WOW!!!!!

You called SAR? First of all, good on you for knowing how to even do that, I don't! :?

A good bug out lesson for you too though. Had you been in that situation with no available SAR, what would you have done? Did you fail to pack the neccessary equipment to save your life? It is winter after all.
Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness.

It wasn't lack of prep (aside from experience) it was just the spot i was in was a rocky shore between two roughly 30 foot bluffs, and I could see no way out. W/o SAR, I would have been able to stay alive/warm for a while but I'm damn glad I didn't have too. Lesson from today: Don't go alone. Lesson applied today from previous learnings: know when to call for help.

Ended up having to be towed behind one of the SAR kayaks about 200 yards dowstream and across the creek to get to a spot where we could climb out. Not a fun day, scratched camping till next weekend.

I feel like a hammered sack of dog shit, excuse the expression.

I never felt secure in one of those damn things . I do have an inflatable that is much more secure , but sounds like you have a pretty trecherous river there . I always liked to camp on sort of lazy rivers with my big pregnant canoe .

PART 1

we hit the trails about 7:30am and the temp was 61F with moderate fog when i arrived. when we left it was 81F and partly cloudy. we were out for 6.5 hrs and covered approx. 7-8 miles. while most of the country is getting hit with snow and blizzards earlier in the week we are able to hit the trail in just pants and tee shirts.

we could have easliy hung out at the beach with a cooler full of ice cold beer and checked out that wild life! 8)

WELCOME TO SUNNY FLORIDA IN WINTER!

i will start off by saying the hike was great, but the hunt not so great. i plan on doing much more hunting in the future, but there are some things i need to learn. we started off hiking some of the fire breaks / dirt roads. i was thinking we could pick up a rabbit or two along the grassy sides. we didnt see a single rabbit the whole trip. i figured i could at least pick up a few squirrel, and we had a chance early in the morning at 8 or 9 squirrel, but we didnt take them. they were easy targets too, as they were only 10 - 20 ft above us in some oak trees. i chose not to take them for a couple reasons. for one, i didnt have a way to carry them ( poor planning on my part ). i could have just dropped them in my pack, but then i could end up with a pack and gear covered in dead squirrel guts and blood. second i knew it would be a while before we were at a location where we could clean and cook them. you cant light a fire just any place, so i was thinking we could get a couple squirrel close into a camp site that had a fire ring where we would be allowed to light a fire.... well, after we found those squirrel early in the morning we didnt see another one for the rest of the day.

my solution will be to take along my radio pouch that came with my MOLLE ruck. i could then attach that to the outside of my pack. its large enough to hold several squirrel and at least a few rabbits. next time i go small game hunting i will take the little bastards when i have the chance!

Image

we also saw plenty of deer and hog tracks. this one looks like hog tracks to me. its possible its deer though. they can sometimes look very simular. :?

Image

after hiking some of the roads we hit some open grassy areas. we hiked/hunted that area for a while, and then stopped for a break for a snack break.

Image

Image

maybe my ugly mug scared off all the critters...

Image

CLICK ON THE IMAGE BELOW TO SEE THE VIDEO OF THE COWS...

Image

during our break we sat under a small oak tree. on the other side of the field approx. 200 yards out we spotted three deer. two were bucks, and one was kinda hiding behind an oak. the two bucks were BIG for florida deer. i dailed out the scope on my rifle and had a good look at them. next i grabbed my tasco binoculars and had a really good look at them. this is the first time i used these past 100 yards, and they worked great. one of the bucks had a really big rack. im sure any deer hunter would have been proud to take that monster. BTW this is small game season, and deer are of limits...

this first photo in just a shot across the field to try and give an idea how far away they were. the second photo is with my camera zoomed all the way out, but its hard to see the deer in the photo. they are standing between the two trees in the middle of the frame.

Image

Image

during our break we talked about our gear, and rifles. my buddy has an old winchester ( forget what model ) but its pretty darn old, and awesome for that matter. who doesnt like old rifles? his breaks down into two parts which makes it packable to some degree, and it shoots .22 short, .22 long, and .22 long rifle! my rifle is a mossberg 702, nothing special, but its a great shooter, and accurate. i have a daisy scope on it ( dont laugh ) but the scope is actually made by winchester, they just slap the daisy name on it. it holds zero just fine, and has clear optics. what more do you need for a .22?

we hung out with a turtle during our break...

Image

Image

after walking the roads and grassy plains we hit the FT in hopes that we would have a shot at some squirrel in the hammocks.

Image

Image

Image

Image

turned up dirt from hogs...

Image

here was a decent looking water source. i did not top off here as i knew we would come accross better water on this trail. this could have been used if needed.

Image

we stopped for lunch at the campsite that we SHOULD have been staying at tonight  . its a nice campsite with plenty of room for people to spead out. it has a fire pit, some benches, and a picnic table. the mail box holds a register book where people basically write in some comments about the trail, trail conditions, tips about the trail, or whatever.

Image

Image

i took 3 ltrs of water with me. 2 ltrs in a outdoor products hydration bladder, which is working just fine, and has gotten plenty of use, and 1 ltr in my new ZS nalgene. i used almost all the water from my nalgene for lunch and decided i would top off before hiking back. the water pump is just 1/10 of a mile from the campsite. the water from this pump can be cloudy at times, this time it was nice and clear. i didnt feel the need to filter, but i did use MSR purifier solution. i have read reviews of people saying that this solution makes the water tast like chemicals. IMO the water tasted no better, or worse than the water from the tap in my house. i had a very slight chemical taste to it, but for me its a non issue.

Image

Image

on the hike out we found grapefruit and oranges ( we knew they would be there ) and they KICK ASS as always! my buddy is great at climbing for these things. we loaded up on the way out, and i actually added 4 lbs to my packs weight when i added the fruit. i was happy to carry the extra weight for the awesome citrus score! my buddy loaded up his vest. we have a few trails that i know of that offer up free fruit.

i spotted this prickly pear on the way out, though there was no fruit.

Great trip and photos man . Are the hogs in FL. as big a problem as they are in other states . If so you'd think they would declare open season on them . I always pack those big freezer bags in my coat , then you don't mind packing the small game in your hunting coat ( oh thats right you don't need coats ).
Squirrels ,if they think your not hunting them can be gregarious and tame and once they realize your the enemy they turn into sneaky little bastards .
Some of those photos are haunting man ,like that one down the lane with the spanish moss hanging down and the fog .
I remember when I first saw Fl. as a lad of 18 it could have been another planet to my point of view . I have heard of prickly pear but I never thought of it growing in Fl. Nice to have Tarzan with you to harvest the high hanging fruit

Camping

NOTE: Stewartville backpacking CLOSED during Winter months, opens in the Spring.

Stewartville Backpack Camp is for the general public. The fee is $5 per night per person. Camping is limited to two nights during the spring, summer and fall. There is room for 20 campers. Picnic tables and a pit toilet are available, as well as water for horses (the water is non-potable and must be filtered or treated for human consumption).

Well shit. No camping till March, that sux :( This parkland is literally across the street for me, and stretches pretty much as far as the eye can see. I wanted to do this like a realistic bug out and walk from the house the 10-15 miles to the campsite.
Oh well, since I can't share any pics from the AO here's a video from the park if you'd like to see my part of the country- http://www.ebparks.org/files/EBRPD_file ... a_hike.mov
Guess I'll be bugging out to some public land instead, maybe see some snow :)

thanks for the comments riverjoe47! hogs are a problem in FL. you can hunt hogs in FL on private land all year long with no size or bag limit or license. as far as WMA's and public land there are seasons / rules and regs. which need to be observed. the woods in FL can be spooky at night with the oaks and spanish moss, i agree 100%. thats part of fun in camping here. :)

as far as the squirrel go i FAILED myself. i failed to improvise, adapt, and overcome. im kicking myself in the ass for not taking a minute to slow down, and solve my problem. i woke up this morning and the first thing that popped in my head was " why in the hell didnt i use some palm fronds to improvise a pouch " im kicking myself in the ass all morning now for not slowing down, and thinking the problem through. i was faced with a problem that i failed to overcome... i was given an oppertunity and didnt take full advantage of it...

The largest US populations of wild boar are in Florida, Texas, California and Hawaii. They can be found in half of the US states, and their range is spreading to include the more northern states of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio.

Dont know your hunting background, but a Duck Strap is a very common thing. Should work for squirrel too :D
Just a few connected slip knots really, you could make one out of string in a few minutes.

I’d like to start this entry with a sobering reminder to be prepared. As I checked in with the park attendant, he requested my cell phone number in case of an emergency. This struck me as a little off. In an emergency why would you need my number? Wouldn’t you want a contact that wasn’t camping with me???

The park attendant passed on an experience from a not so lucky hiker from a few weeks back. He, like I, checked in with the same attendant. Relayed when he expected to return and said goodbye. As his time of return came and passed the attendant became concerned and called local authorities. Helicopters, ATV’s, and hikers were launched. Several hours later they found the poor hiker suffering from exhaustion and dehydration. He was found a mere 100 yards from a natural spring bubbling potable water. Take note this spring is marked on the map he had on his person. Now, how you can get lost and become dehydrated in this area is lost to me. The trails are well marked, there is a lake within sight, and civilization only a few miles away.

Let this serve as a reminder that even, in a well maintained hiking area things can go horribly wrong.

Hello my name is Warner, and I am a gear-aholic.

Enough of that. My plan was to hike in part of the Goodwater Trail of Lake Georgetown to a primitive campsite named Walnut Springs. I reached the trail head at 10:15 am. The hike to Walnut Springs is about 1.8 miles or so.

Image

As you can see there was some remaining snow from the 2 inches we received the day before. Damn near needed some snow shoes!

Image

Image

Image

About ½ mile on the trail I stumbled across one of Mother Nature’s offerings, free shelter.

Image

Image

Image

Views from along the trail of Lake Georgetown and the terrain.

Image

Image

Image

This old oak tree was quite puzzling. Almost one half of this tree was dead, long dead.

Image

About 11:15 I arrived at the planned primitive camping grounds. These are pretty well maintained. As you can see there are picnic tables, lamp stands, and fire rings.

Image

Someone was building something before I showed up.

Image

First order was collecting fire wood for the colder night. The Sven saw made short work of it. When using this saw it’s recommendable to wear gloves because of the close proximity of the hands and fingers to the wood while cutting.

Image

Image

FAIL I should take my own advice. Smashed a knuckle. 

Image

Fire provisions have been sorted out for the night so next is water collection. This exercise returns us to the first fail. My spontaneous decision to leave behind the 4L bag. I made 4 trips from my campsite to the water’s edge (100 yards) to keep refilling the nalgene. Mind this was only for food prep and cleanup. My hydration bag water barely lasted the entire trip. In hind sight, it would have been super nice not to make so many trips for water collection.

When I returned from the water collection I ran into a friendly group of scouts and leaders. These youngsters were preparing for a soon coming trip to Philmont. Before they left I wished them well and they were on their way.

By 2:00pm the weather was nice, clear sky, 63 degrees and a 10 to 15 mph winds from the SW. Note having much to do I started out on a short recon hike around my area. First thing I saw was a bird of prey. Not really sure what species.

This fellow hung around my campsite for hours.

Another of couple shots of Mother Nature’s offerings. Pain & Death.

While returning to camp I spotted an interesting water source. In no way was I hard up enough to utilize this resource, but it was there non-the-less.

A very large Mesquite Tree. Note the size of my hiking staff next to it.

Next priority when I returned was setting up the shelter.

After shelter was set I stated lunch and enjoyed the view.

My dear friend the bird of prey stuck around for a long time. Perched in a large dead tree he would swoop through the campsite every now and again. This guy was hungry and on the hunt. Suffering from mild boredom I made a pact with my new buddy. I won’t eat until you do. Obviously I wasn’t really serious about this. Soon after the bird left. About a quarter to 6 he returned buzzing right by my campsite with some sort of rodent in his clutch! All I could see is fur. Guess what? Dinner time! :D

After dinner I returned to the water and refilled my nalgene. When I returned the campsite population had grown by 2. I now have neighbors. Two women to be specific. I introduced myself and made some small talk before parting ways for the night. It was getting a little chilly now, about 52 degrees at 6:30pm. Time for a fire! I prepped this earlier when I cut up all the fire wood.

Before turning in for the evening I tried out my new Snow Peak lantern. Worked pretty well!

During the night it was pretty breezy. I stayed warm for the most part with the only exception of my head coming uncovered from time to time. When I woke it was 42 degrees at 7:30 am. Time for a cupa brew and pack up.

Parting shot. Like some had done before me, I left a calling card to entertain future campers.

Dont know your hunting background, but a Duck Strap is a very common thing. Should work for squirrel too :D
Just a few connected slip knots really, you could make one out of string in a few minutes.

Don't kick yourself for not taking the shot. If you were really hungry, you would have taken the shot.

i have see those before at the adult store.... didnt know they were used for hunting too! i have zero hunting background, but its something i wanna learn more about. im sure it would work for squirrel just fine. there are a number of things that could have worked that i didnt come up with.

yeah, if i was starving, having a bag to hold a dead squirrel in would be the last thing i would worry about. i would have shot, then worried about that.

Thanks! And thank you again for setting this up. Got me motivated to go out and test new gear and test myself.
