West Texas Wintergeddon-Park is open, BRING FIREWOOD!

Postby sigboy40 » Thu Jan 13, 2011 9:29 am

Febuary 12-13th at Caprock Canyon State park, Chapter 13 will be holding their second annual Wintergeddon. All are invited, and no, you don't have to participate in the topless trail run.

This years Wintergeddon will have 50% more suck then last year! Although we cannot promise ice crystal laced fog, extended hikes due to washed out trails, or mud that sticks to your boots, making you taller. We can promise a good time by all! There will be cake (if you want pie, bring your own)! There will be blue wire! Our Internet Freak Flag will be flying!
Currently in the planning process is a group meal Saturday evening.... A trail run sometime Saturday, a short hike. Some classes may be taught. I am considering a knot tying class, posssibly a cold weather survival class, and I am open to other suggestions.
This will be an overnight tent camping trip, there will be restrooms available, and possibly running water. If the burn ban is lifted, I can pack my large tent, complete with wood burning stove. There is a fire ring available. I only ask that everybody brings firewood so that there is no shortage.
You are also welcome to come out just for the day if you don't want to spend the night! We will be camping 20 yards from the road, there is no reason to not come and visit!

Also, should interest be high enough, we will have a trade blanket, provided of course, that it's not so bitterly cold that we are using it for warmth.

On the agenda so far is some tips on cooking over an open fire, I will have my meager supply of cast iron out. I will also set up my large sidewall tent with wood burning stove should the weather warrant it, and we out from under this burn ban.

Comments and suggestions for activities are encouraged. All others will be flogged.

I'll have the lifeboat ration sampler pack there for everybody to taste.
I'll have lots of gear for sell or trade as well as cash for buy.
I'll bring poker supplies and nerd games.

If anybody needs to borrow some piece of gear or a ride from Lubbock let me know, I'll see what we can do.

Rough schedule for those who are planning on driving in from down south.
Saturday:"
10am - 2 pm arrival and camp set up.

2pm- 4 mile day hike to an awesome freshwater spring

3pm- tarp shelter setup pointers during the hike. Bring your USGI ponchos or other tarp shelter

6pm- Dinner, pot luck style, bring plenty and we can all share.

Sunday:

9am- Campfire cooking,

11am- trail run/day hike

I am tentatively planning on trying to arrive by 6pm Friday night if anybody wants to arrive early. I wont know for a few more weeks. But my plan is to leave work that Friday and drive straight to the campsite and get the big tent set up.

What are the reservations like? I'm interested in driving up Friday depending on people riding w/ me, but if you aren't there, will we be able to get a site?

It now looks like GunsUp and I will be at the site on Friday for all of those that want to show up early.

we are still scheduling for classes, anybody care to volunteer?

I WILL be setting up my 12x12 wall tent with a heater inside for extra warmth for the group events. I dont think I will be using the wood burning stove, but I have a propane heater that will work almost as well.

Does anybody have an outdoorsy tea kettle to boil water in?

Bump to stir more interest. It looks like CG is cooking up a big pot of spaghetti sauce to feed us all.

This will also be a great time to plan your entry into the ZS Winter Bug Out Contest! I even heard a rumor that a judge will be on hand to witness all of the self induced suckage! And if you don;t want that, I can attange a nice warm place for everybody to congregate!

I love it when a plan comes together!

Dinner Saturday:

If there's anything that might possibly go in spaghetti sauce that you can't have, let me know NOW. If it's onions, garlic, meat or tomatoes...bring your own dinner. As soon as things thaw out, I'll get the ingredients and cook it up this weekend. I use coconut butter/ghee to saute everything in. There'll be Italian sausage, tomatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, basil, oregano, parsley, red pepper and more garlic in the sauce, but I may add random stuff, like spinach sliced very very small or squash/zucchini. Sauce should stand up on its own.

Sigboy is going to bring noodles since I don't do wheat. I may or may not make zucchini noodles, depending on how chunky the sauce ends up.

Anybody want to bring bread for everybody else?

I'll bring my one-burner propane stove and a big pot for the sauce. If somebody else wants to bring something better (or in addition to, to cook the noodles on), go for it.

Sig, are we planning to do any shared meals the rest of the time, or everybody to their own devices? I normally do scrambled eggs with some kind of meat for breakfast, and it wouldn't be any harder to scramble a dozen or two than it would be to scramble 2 or 3 on Saturday morning.

I'll bring the bread as long as txKingfisher doesn't back out on going, no 9 hour drives alone for me. Do we have an estimated headcount yet? I'll also bring my little butane canister stove, it boils water pretty well as long as it's not too windy, and I can make a wind screen for it anyway. I don't keep a large pot in my preps though, if I remember I'll bring one. I was planning on bringing an MRE tray of some sort to share; I don't think I have a dessert one, but if I do I'll bring that.

Sounds good BigDaddy.

Dont worry about a big pot and boiling water. I have that covered. I'm packing for this trip like I should have packed for The Llano trip.

That and this time I'm packing a pickup load of gear instead of my BOB like I did last time because somebody mistakenly labeled it as a mock bug out.

CG can you have potatoes and rice?

Hopefully the four inches of snow this morning will help ease the burn ban.

I will send out a PM with all the particulars and contact information on Wens. If you are not confirmed before then, you are still welcome, but consider it to be a huge game of hide and seek. Where the only difference is that we dont know that somebody is looking for us. Of course, the huge ZS flag may be a giveaway.

Spaghetti sauce went in the crockpot yesterday about 11am. I'm planning on leaving it in there until tonight.

I only put 12 cloves of garlic in it, it might need more...

Y'know, spaghetti sauce tastes MUCH better when you remember to put a bit of salt in it.

And another 10 cloves of garlic.

Okay, only 5...

...or 6.

I can't remember if I can say the words I want to say on this forum or not.

I now have a pan and a batch of spaghetti sauce that are going to be chunked.

The last time I cooked in it, I made taco meat. It came out with an off-taste (BS said it tasted yummy, like Taco Bell - I thought it was nasty).

I transferred the spaghetti sauce into the pot to simmer it down a bit while adding a bit more garlic and such.

It now has that same nasty-as-hell taste.

I'm PISSED.

I got this off the TPWD website:
02/09/2011 - Due to possible winter storm conditions we recommend you call ahead before you visit any Texas State Parks. The following parks are currently closed: Battleship TEXAS, Caprock Canyons, Palo Duro Canyon, Possum Kingdom, San Jacinto Battleground, & Wyler Aerial Tramway.

Any backup plans in case they're closed?

The weather reports are clear for the rest of the week. I see no reasons why the parks wont reopen in the next day or two.

In the off chance that they dont, we should be able to move the event to private property.
