RULES / GUIDELINES

5 - you will need to spend at least 24 hours outside. your trip should include some amount of hiking with your gear / pack strapped to your back.

I have an issue with #5

I have a back injury that limits me from hiking (or even walking) I can get to most remote places by my suv though & camp off in the woods from there. So can I still particpate ??

If you just drive somewhere and plop down a site, that's not really bugging out on foot, in the nature of the contest... I think. I guess it's up to the judges.

You raise a very valid question there aa1pr, one that I do think needs to be brought to attention.
Personally, I'd hate to see anyone not be able to participate in this due to any sort of physical disability, injury or other limiting factor for that matter. That concept applies entirely within the full scope of survival, and not necessarily just bugging out... as everyone is different and only capable of so much.

Eric does have a good point, I'm gonna have to mull this over and get in touch with DS.

I mean, ultimately, you said "some hiking", not "this many miles"

Keep that in mind too. Even a little bit of walking is better than 0, since the whole point of this is less about prizes and more about motivation to get out and do it.

Simply put, you're right. IMHO if it motivates someone to go camp out in their backyard for the first time... I'm cool with that too.
My question is, do we keep rule 5 as-is or do we need to modify/clarify it?

This contest is entirely dependant on people being honest describing what they did. He could just have easily not hiked and said he did. He did not do that.

In a true bug out situation he if could not hike, he would have to truck it in. If we are gonna play it like we live it, then let him truck his BOB in.

Judge us on our hike and him on his ability to drive his vehicle over trees and through rivers. Just different ways to the same goal.

if you drive out and "camp off in the woods" as you say, then i assume some walking is involved. i can also assume that you will be walking in and around camp. your injury is no secret since you have posted about it before. the fact that you wanna get out in a vermont witner is a win in my book! i imagine camping out in the cold with a back injury is no picnic.

keep in mind that just because you may not do a " hike " ( which could be just a few miles in my book ) you can still enter. there could be a potential loss of points without a hike, but IMO you have enough skill to make up points some where else.

you are good to go so start packing up your gear!

Thank you,

I see my question/issue may have provoked another to bug out and/or to alter the rules again in the official thread for the contest, I will respectfully withdraw

However my 14 year old son will do this instead in the ZS fashion, not sure if I will join him

OK this is what I dug out for prizes.

1st place:

http://www.opticsplanet.net/blackhawk-t ... -pack.html

Does not include the hydration bladder. Color is black.

2nd place:

http://www.amazon.com/KA-BAR-Becker-Nec ... B001GQW3UC

3rd place:

http://smithsedge.com/products/product.asp?id=33&cid=21

All these items come out of my collection so they are gently used to some extent. That being said they are all well taken care of and have TONS of life left for the outdoors. The backpack got the most use, the knife has only been carried, and the sharpening system only used twice. I'd rather these things get used by someone instead of collecting dust in my closet. Best of luck to all entering!

folks...

we could get into a gray area if people are doing this trip with people other than themselves. i have no problem with say, a husband and wife bugging out over night for this contest since this could be a real scenario. i also dont have a problem seeing the husband and wife showing their skills and gear.

what i dont want to see is three guys showing tons of indavidual skills, three shelters, etc. etc. and posting it on one entry. i hope im being clear here.

again, this could get into a gray area and is totally open for discusion.

I am going to withdraw my "taking my wife request" just cause when I told her about the upcoming contest her responce was "thats cool." And then when I told her I asked if she could come too.... (wait for it)

Her responce was "I dont #%@&ing think so... I am not gonna go camping in this weather! If I gotta survive in it, that is one thing, but if I dont [b]HAVE TOO, I AM NOT GONNA... PERIOD![/b"

With that I will still participate, but alas, alone...

This is a great idea. I'm in!

xxxDarksidexxx, I just tossed you an email with a few suggestions.

I didn't read the entire thread so I'm not sure who the judges are but it might be cool to have a "viewer's choice" from a forum poll in addition to the judges choice. :)

I put in a material request for a few ZS items from the store to donate to this for prizes. Since you already have prizes for the judges choice, maybe the ZS store items can be for the "viewer's choice"? It's up to you guys. Just let me know.

For those of you whining about the rules or concerned that those with the coolest gear will win, stop whining. This is just for fun. :P
Just make up for your lack of "cool gear" with a really good write up. That's what I'm going to have to do.

I'm getting ahead of myself but just an idea to keep in mind for later:
If there is enough interest in this maybe we can do a charity drive with it next year and ask for a donation for each vote (like the Postal Match and Prostate Cancer drives). Run the submission window from Dec 1st - Jan 31st and put up voting for a month starting on Feb 1st.

excellent for you to want to join in! i got your PM and will respond.

i will list the judges on the official contest thread in a day or so. i will also post up the list of prizes we have so far.

we went with judges as there was some concern that the "people" would vote based off of who has the "best" gear. i agree in that i think people get hung up on cool gear, and at times there is not enough thought put into the skills one has. skills, and knowing your AO is as, if not more important than the gear you have on your back.

i think the "viewers choice" poll may be cool. i dont have a problem with that at all. if the majority on here agree i say lets go for it. the judged entries can get all the donated prizes from the ZS members, and the ZS store prizes can go to the "viewers choice" winner like you mentioned..... maybe even a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for that as well.

it would be very cool to see this turn into something bigger such as a carity event. i guess when fall rolls around next year we can kick it around and see what happens.
