Lasik

Postby crashin » Mon Dec 20, 2010 12:38 pm

Yep, I'm posting this in the correct forum.

I just had Lasik 11 days ago. I went shooting Saturday and had some issues seeing the front sight post shooting with both a rifle and a pistol.

Has anyone else who shoots and has had lasik had these issues and did it go away?

They told me my vision would keep getting better for a while and I'm seeing 20/20 uncorrected in both eyes already. So I am hoping this is a short term deal and I'll be better shortly.

I hope you get better. I have thought about the surgury as well and was reluctant for the reasons you stated not knowing anyone who shoots who had it. On the good side I was told at one of my local ranges (one that is actually good) that one of the doctors who does it (the surgery) says you should be able to shoot without issue. Hoping he was not talking about scoped guns and the like.

Anyway please keep me and the rest of the ZS'ers posted.

Your eyes will definitely be improving over time. I'd say in around 3-6 months your vision will have settled enough to where you'll know what your eyes will be like from here on in.

also, wear eye protection ;)

I experienced similar issues and it was a temporary deal for me.

Rifle front sight post became ‘crisp’ after about a month, pistols took a little longer (maybe 2 months?). I also had issue with blurry illuminated scopes and reddots – this took about 6 months to clear up.

I had my Lasik done in February and I can say that after few weeks my vision drastically improved. Give it a little time and visit your doctor to check the healing of the eye regularly (1 day,1 week, 1 month, 3 months, etc). Also, use the eye drops and steroids they gave you and this will help in the healing process too. The only complain I had in the beginning was the driving at night - felt weird with all the lights and stuff, but now is just fine.
Hope you get better and stay positive.

Halos have already started to go away for the most part. I'm happy with the results so far. I was really just hoping to get some confirmation that this is normal and will go away. I've been making all the appointments so far and will continue to do so.

What's going on is a difference between sensation and perception. Your eyes are fine but healing, and your brain hasn't caught up yet, basically. Doing range time is a good exercise for it all. You'll be set in about 3-4 months, I'd bet.

Any long term results? Anyone reverted back needing glasses? I love my contacts, but would be cool if I don't need them.

I had it done ~5 years ago and I'm older to begin with. I get some fuzziness here and there, but nothing requiring glasses yet. I believe I'll need them for reading or whatever later on but nowhere near the strength.

Just thought I'd follow up. I bought a new Taurus 709 the other day so I made it out to the range to test it out. Both the gun and my eyes functioned well.

Seems that the focus issue has resolved itself. Now I just need to find some more time to get out and shoot.

What is the average cost for the surgery? I know it varies according to what needs to be done, but ballpark.

Thanks for the update, currently saving up for the procedure (later this year hopefully). Have the halos gone away completely?

Howaido -
I had it done in Canada & it was about $1000 per eye. Probably lower now

I had mine done about 8-9 years ago. Best money I ever spent. Had no issues, but it does take 3-6 months to "settle down" and they say a complete year to heal. I think mine was about $1400 per eye as I had the custom and not standard surgery. I was about -6 in both eyes prior.

This is where I got mine done. They run specials in our local paper around this time of year (tax return season) down to about $350 per eye depending on your perscription. They do them 7 days a week, 12 hours a day with multiple surgeons. My Doctor told me he had so much work that they do not have to take any higher risk patients and really make sure they can do a quality job.

I wish I had done it years before and I think it may be the #1 prep you can do for the zombiepocalypse.

I had LASEK done in early 09. Fortunately, being combat arms, mine was Gov't paid. Best thing the Army ever did for me. Not sure on the SOP for LASIK, but EK put us on a 30 day no sweat/no shooting profile. My vision kept fluctuating from really good, to bad, for about the first month after the surgery. After that, it's no issue. The only lingering issue I have is some residual scar tissue (my fault) that causes lights to be hazy, especially at night.

This is all promising news. I've wanted LASIK surgery for a long time now, but never knew how it affected shooters. Thanks y'all!

Mine was about $3,000. I paid with my employer provided flex plan.

Please do not merely price shop for Lasik - this is your EYESIGHT we're talking about.
Research your doctors well.
The Lasik part of my surgery was $1,000 an eye from an award-winning surgeon, 5 years ago.
I'm now getting a little blurriness from time to time that clears up with normal eye drops. (I also had implanted contacts.)

My parents' LASIK procedures cost about $4000 for each of them, about 5 years ago. Seems expensive, but they had theirs done by the group that did Tiger Woods, Pete Sampras, etc. They also get all the referrals when "LASIK-o-Rama" places botch other jobs. Quality costs, but if you want to gamble, go for some cheap place. Your eyes may or may not thank you.

Everyone I know (including me) was told to expect to have to use reading glasses as you get older. As in, about the time a person with non-corrected vision might start needing reading glasses. It is just more of an expected result versus a possibility for people who got Lasik. I had mine about 5 years ago and had no noticable issues with firearm sights but strangely enough, I swapped from Left eye dom to Right eye dom... was very weird until I realized it had happened.

Having the Lasik surgery was worth every penney to me. I was spending way to much money for glasses, sunglasses, and eye protection for shooting/work.

Stay safe.
