yeah you really wont need a side arm or bear spray.

you'll have a 30-06 that can kill anything in PA. I dont even take my glock. However i do carry if i am butchering


as far as survival gear and a GPS it depends on where you go i know its counter i just bring some food and a thromos of coffeee

of course i can see my cousins house from my stand and i have been hiking that land since i could walk

ETA espcally if you are on public land and have to hump all over try and be as light as possable. you wlll be burdened with hevay winter clothing anyway

I meant why carry bear spray when you have a gun? Or sidearm? Most bears in my area are averse to having the dirt 6' in front of them exploding at them despite the soft tasty pink defenseless thing. Same goes for cougars and bobcats.

Sadly Finch gun safety isn't a given, we can't assume that everyone practices it. I love hunting and won't stop but five people died in my province last year that I know of from hunting related shootings that could have all been avoided I am sure.

To the OP if you plan on field dressing game and there are predators in your area that give you concern I would say carry your handgun, consider it insurance that you will most likely never need. Stories abound of outdoorsmen/women who stopped to releave themselves and left thier longarm leaning on a tree only to have Pa Grizz or Ma Cougar decide it was a good time to visit. When you field dressing game you may be surprised about how insistant even a black bear can be that they want a meal.
None of this is ment to scare you from hunting but understand that there are some very real dangers.
Oh and hunting is also a good way to scout the countryside if you ever have to bug out on foot.

As for the five deaths, yes and that was in my Province and the ones that actualy made mainstream media coverage, sadly such things generaly go unreported in the news as a whole. We also have a horribly understaffed/underfunded Fish and Wildlife policing service but thats another topic for another day. Poaching off of private land is rampant from non locals and ya it just gets better from there.
Thats why I tryed to point out that when hunting (or anything for that matter) you can not count on the smarts of your fellow man. You have to take your own safety as priority one.

-its not like you can put the deer over your sholders and walk out. a good 20 foot rope (550 cord) works great. if you are in a tree stand you can even tie it to your gun so you dont have to carry that up the ladder with you. It will allow you to savely bring the gun up to the stand and put it down on the ground from the stand.

It wil allow you to tie the rope to the deer and drag it out of the woods without the aide of an ATV.

If you are stuck in the woods with an injury or something it can also help you make shelter and or a splint, or turnicut.

Ok I dont know what state your in but a majority require a hunter education cource contact your state conservation/game dept for the perculiars to your state. they may have a set of resources that will help you out with processing deer.

Stories makde a book on processing and butchering of deer but if you cant find one of those a goat book is just as good scale up since deer are about 2.5 times bigger then a meat goat. and yer not gonna get crap off the rib cage anyway...

The 2 biggest things are going to be actually taking the deer legally. And yes hitting it with a car is usually ok as Law enforcement at least in missouri will issue a tag to transport the road kill, You hit it may as well use it. The second is field dressing the animal carcass

Was that four on one side and five on the other? Any case gratz, my deer season was fallow-again because of work and three unused deer tags. At least some of us were successful.

There are 3 does that keep bedding down next to my truck at night. But come legal ( daylight) they are long gone. The only deer I saw during the 10 days of firearms season was a little 4 point buck that is about 3 points shy of legal in my county. For most of MO the bucks have to have at least 4 on a side.

anyway archery season is still running. and I still have acorns and mushrooms in the woods next to my gound blind. I got till january to bag one. and there is always muzzleloader season coming up and those does are still legal.
