Fresh back from our winter camping trip I present a couple of reivews on new and not so new gear.

First up will be my most recent aquisition. T.A.D. Gear F.A.S.T. Pack PS v2. This pack is to replace my Blackhawk! OPSEC pack. The over all quality of the T.A.D. pack is far superior to Blackhawk or most other packs I have seen. This much was expected due to the high price tag. MOLLE webbing and PALS webbing are in no short supply which gives me the option to move gear normally stored in the bag to the outside. The pack has 2 internal zipper pockets one above the other. The top pocket is gussetted which allowed storeage of things like energy bars to my Panasonic DLSR. The bottom pocket swallowed up my Goretex parka and pants. Though there is a hydration compatable pocket, there is not much in the way of securing it from movement. The pocket is far too deep for a 100oz bag which leaves it hanging. Not a huge problem, but a small annoyance. Empty weight of the bag seems a little heavy, however once loaded up and worn the pack rides very close to the back with the weight of the pack placed on the hips. Fully contoured shoulder straps keep them where the should be. All in all there are no regrets with this bag.

This is my most recent creation.
12 x 16 tarp. The pitch was inspired by http://nwwoodsman.com/Articles/TarpSetUp.html
Their tarp is 9*12 and wasn't quite big enough for me. With the 12x16 the peak is 8' tall and I can stand, stretch and dress while protected from the elements.

A respectable 6x6. My hunting buddies honor. This was the second load back to camp. That's a Kelty Cache Hauler loaded with a boned quarter, head, and cape. My guess is between 110 and 130 lbs. That's just about the limit for that pack as it was riding a bit low. Nice thing was it was downhill back to camp. He had a local outfitter haul it back out the the vehicles.

Day my ScrapYard Regulator arrived:

A chopping test (this knife isn't designed for chopping) on a section of very seasoned Oak...

Image

This was a camping trip in May 2010. Knives used:

ScrapYard Regulator = Shelter & Batoning
ScrapYard Scraper 5 = Food Prep
ScrapYard Urban Mutt = General Use

Regulator:

Full 4 days / 3 nights of baton work....

Image
Image

On day 3 I thought I'd test the edge with a single angular swing at a strong branch....

Image

Pulled the stone out to sharpen it, but thought I'd perform the "curl test" before sharpening....

Image

Other Bussekin:

Wife making dinner....

Image

My dividing a steak into "His & Hers" servings....

Image

The aftermath:

Finish wear, but a razor edge after 30 seconds on a wet stone...

This is the Browning takedown Safari rod. It is 6'6" and is a lightweight to medium action rod. I am pretty impressed with it. It comes with a crush proof, quiet exterior case, and each section has it's own sleeve. $99.99 at Bass Pro with a one year warranty against defects. I am not much of an extended warranty guy, but Bass Pro offers a deal on these rods which is a good bargain imo. 2 year NO QUESTIONS FULL REPLACEMENT WARRANTY for $19.99. If I bust it, no matter what, I get a full replacement. I equipped it with a Pflueger President spinning reel model number 6730. It comes with 2 spoolsand performs and casts like a dream. Cost, $59.99 at Bass Pro. I have a local Bass Pro, so they got my business. This setup performs very nicely. I mainly fish for trout and walleye, and I use 4 lb test on one spool, and I have the other equipped with 8 lb. Here is the rod case attached to my Kifaru Spike Camp pack.

Coleman stove, can't quite remember the name but it does a decent job of providing a brew up after swimming in the sea at its coldest point!

Well this might not be in the field. This is me cooking dinner in the garage after working on the jeep for a few hours. I was to nasty to go inside and cook. So what was I going to do? Then it hit me why not use my preps just to get in a little practice with them. I cooked some mountain house chilli mac and enjoyed a adult beverage. I used my MSR pocket rocket and my new MSR pot I picked up last january. The pot is called the seagull not sure if that is the real name or not . It is a good pot the handle feels a little weak but held up to the weight with no problems.
Image

Where did I eat? On the jeep of course. The creepy neighbor next door was looking at me through the window like I was crazy. I didn't care I was happy and the food was great.

Went backpacking with a class and tried out my new tent. It's a Glacier's Edge Galaxy backpacker tent with footprint. The label says it ways 5.9 lbs.
The pack is an ILBE and the multi-cam is Tru-Spec H2O proof top and bottem.
Image
Image
The tent is a three season tent and I think it was a little cold for it. It dropped down to about 10 or 15 degrees.
I am completely and utterly out of ammo, that has never happened before. "Bert Gummer"
