DragonCon 2010

Postby antamune » Fri Jan 22, 2010 9:18 am

DragonCon 2010 (September 3 - September 6)

It is the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the US.

The convention is located in:
Hilton Atlanta
Hyatt Regency Atlanta
Marriott Marquis Atlanta
Sheraton Atlanta Hotel

Dragon*Con membership covers all four days, all panels, events, demonstrations, concerts, performances, contests, snacks and munchies in our Consuite (as available) and a host of other activities.

Pricing for the Memberships to Dragon*Con 2010 is as follows:
•$70 until 02/15/2010
•$80 until 05/14/2010
•$90 until 07/15/2010
•$100 thereafter
Group Memberships are discounted $5 per Membership when 10 or more are purchased in advance at one time, in one envelope.

For children under 7 years of age there are 2 options:
1.You can bring your child in for free;
2.Or, for the price of a regular membership, you can have your child placed in our at-con Day Care. Children that are not potty-trained, are not eligible for Day Care.

To have a presence at DragonCon there are free to use Fan Tables.
Fan-tables must be continuously staffed during the day, from 10:00am until 8:00pm at a minimum. On Monday, plan on staffing the table until 2:00 or 3:00pm. The tables must be staffed by DragonCon Members, so you’ll need a badge to run it.

As for the DragonCon Parade, it is held on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 10:00am, they usually request that all members participating show up around 8:00am.
The registration for the Parade ribbons is online, and once we know how many (if any) would like to walk in the parade I can give them a number to hold for us.

For parking around the convention:
• Hilton Atlanta $28/day valet parking.
• Hyatt Regency Atlanta: $27/day valet parking (Parking garage height is 6 feet.)
• Marriott Marquis Atlanta: $28/day valet parking ($30/day for oversize vehicles.)
• Sheraton Atlanta Hotel: $20/day self parking and $25/day valet parking.
• The parking decks around main hotels: $5 – $10 per day (cheaper on weekends if you can find a good rate), but generally don't allow in-and-out privileges.

All the main hotels are already booked, but most of the overflow hotels are still open. It would be cheaper to split the prices by sharing rooms. I know I wouldn’t mind floor space in a room. I can always bring my sleeping-bag. In the last few years we (thehealer and I) have booked our hotel from thursday to monday so we can pick up our badges before the convention officially opens. We've found it easier in the long run, and a lot less stressful.

I'm posting this to see who all would like to go, and what y'all would like to participate in during the convention. The deadline for the cheapest Membership is only a few days after our next meeting, so I wanted to get this out now so we can know approximately how many want to attend. That'll let me know how many hotel rooms we'll need to book, and how many ribbons we'll need.

http://www.dragoncon.org

EDIT: I'm adding their rules/regulations/Policies. For the convention they are really important, but they aren't easy to find on the main site.

Rules and Policies
1. You must wear your membership badges at all times to be admitted to any convention function. In other words, yes, you have to wear your steenkin' badge!

2. Possession of alcoholic beverages by anyone under 21 years of age is grounds for expulsion from the convention without refund. It's, like, the law, eh?

3. Please keep all behavior that polite fans would find offensive in public in your hotel rooms.

4. Cameras are not permitted in the Art Show or Print Shop. Flash photography will not be allowed during the Masquerade; please check with Masquerade personnel for scheduled pre-or post-Masquerade photo sessions.

5. We'll offer sympathy, but Dragon*Con is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged property, or for injuries sustained during the course of the convention.

6. Announced events and guests are subject to change and/or cancellation without notice. Every effort will be made to announce any changes via the Internet and pre-convention publications and our onsite newsletter, but sometimes last-minute changes will occur.

7. We reserve the right to ask you to leave the convention and refuse to refund your membership money if you are behaving - in technical terms - like a jerk.

8. In general, no smoking, eating or drinking is allowed in the Dealer's Room, Panel Rooms, Art Show, Video Rooms, or Computer Room.

9. Please abide by our weapons policy: All weapons must be non-working and peace bonded. No functioning projectile weapons includes water pistols, silly-string guns, and ping-pong pistols. Bladed weapons must be cased or sheathed at all times. No clowning around or showing off in the common areas. Any weapon used in an offensive manner will be confiscated and rule #7 enforced. We expect you to use good judgment; with your help, we can continue to allow peace-bonded weapons - thanks!

10. Especially in the harsh reality of 2010 Dragon*Con security staff, hotel security, and local law enforcement officials will treat anything that looks like a real gun as a real gun. We do not post bail.

11. NO CAMPING IN THE HALLS OR LOBBY! If you are found sleeping in the public areas, you will be asked to go to your hotel room. If you do not have a room, hotel or venue security will be forced to ask you to leave. Check the message board for people looking for people to share rooms and costs.

12. Please do not abuse our hotels or convention facilities. This includes putting signs on walls. Public locations for notices are provided. Room Parties and other announcements may also be dropped off at our Information Desk for inclusion in the Daily Dragon. Please don't eat the facilities; we'd kinda like to do this again, and under a roof....

13. Costumers, remember that no costume is NO costume, and there are public nudity laws in Georgia. Please wear appropriate (or at least enough) clothing in the common areas.

I'm in!

Thanks for posting all this info for us. We should get the room done as soon as we can. The less expensive the better!

If we got a table we could take turns running it. that way everyone gets to see the con and any panels/events they want to attend.

Talk to Pistolpete, Cyr, Iloveash and Michelle they are the ones who have traveled to the Dragoncon in the past and are setting up for this current event. As for tickets, I got lucky and my brother scored me mine for my Christmas gift.

I know they are trying to get me up to speed on the Preparation aspects to assist in the presentations.

I have talked with Pistolpete, I am going to some Chemical Defense Seminars done by the CDC so he is looking to work me into the ZS Seminar this time, if anyone else has ideas for Preparation we need to get together on it to let the National Chapter review it, this will cut down on the "need" for out of state ZSers coming down here to just work, now they can enjoy themselves rather than Road-trip, set up, work, sneak in drinking, work, hunt for a Kinko's, follow zombie's on the walk, wait in line for a kick ass party and pass out, work, walk around and drive back.

I don't know about most of your survival/ preparedness backgrounds so let see what we can get together.

thehealer and I walk in the Pirate group of the parade every year, and really enjoy it. Although the brisk run to the parade meeting place is always interesting.

Hey Zdigger,
You going to the unofficial largest Steampunk photo on Saturday? I guess they are still trying to get Guinness to sign off on it. My wife and I should be there all Steamed out.

Mom and I are doing the Pirate group for the Parade, then CSI Zombpocalypse for the booth. I'm also in an Avatar: The Last Airbender cosplay group this year. way too much is happening between now and Dcon.
