Woohoo, down to a couple days! Anyone interested in carpooling from STL? I've got space in my truck for people and gear. I'm planning on heading down Wednesday, maybe 9a or noon or something like that.

Sounds like I've got everything then -- the aspirin was a good reminder! Also didn't think of it before but I probably don't need both layers of my sleeping bag for this weather (comes with an arctic layer).

On water I may have to look for an insulated canteen - currently I have a camelbak, two canteens and like a 20 oz bottle but none of that's insulted. Temps are probably going to soar, probably a good idea to grab something insulated.

Hey, don't forget the little mirror you'll need to do a tick check of your nethers, unless you have a very good friend to do that for you.

I'm packing to leave and I keep thinking of more things I need to bring...

I was packing last night and something just occurred to me -- no glass is allowed on the property, so how exactly is there so much liquor?? I mean I heard the bit about flasks and naturally you can bring cans but... what about my fifth of Jack!?

multiple flasks. Ive got one of those gigantic GSI clear polycarbonate flasks that holds a fifth.

Or you could use a Nalgene.
Or a stainless bottle.

I'm sticking with my normal minimalist approach. I have to haul too much ZS crap so I like one small hike up with my personal stuff. :)

Another year with lots of 98° all week? Why is nature trying to kill us?

Hey--if anybody wants/needs some mil-spec type cargo pants, I have 2 pair that I am willing to trade/sell. One pair is OD green made by Tru-Spec and the other pair is tan made by Propper. The green ones are in pretty good condition, the tan ones are just okay--they have some wear and tear but are still serviceable. Both are size Medium-Regular: Inseam 29.5" to 32.5", Waist: 31-35 inches.
I will be bringing them to ZCon as well as the Open Meeting on the 27th. First to PM me wanting one or both pair gets dibs. Thanks--see you on Wednesday!

Edit: Green pants are spoken for! Tan pants still in need of good home.

I didn't see a hump in the schedule -- how extensive are the trails? I'd kind of like to organize one when there are no events going on but I wouldn't know the area.

I have a vague recollection that the nalgene of lime tequila floating in manbath was a huge success on the thursday morning of last zcon..

Dickman does a cool hike over to a good fishing spot, you may want to talk with him about that.

Hughes Mountain hike with Dimmie Disaster!

Hughes Mountain is the best examples of "polygonally jointed" Rhyolite outside of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, earning it the nickname "Devil's Honeycomb". Hughes Mountain traces its origins back 1.5 billion years to a time when molten lava flowed over and just under the surface of Earth's still-cooling crust. A huge pocket of magma welled up in a dome shape and then cooled, forming long, vertical pillars of stone in strikingly regular geometric shapes. During subsequent geologic epochs, the dome sank beneath oceans and was capped with hundreds of feet of sedimentary rock. Later, geologic forces raised the land again. As erosion wore away overlying layers of dolomite and sandstone, the rosy-hued dome of Rhyolite porphyry again came to light.

we should hit st.louis around 7am, the goal is a good breakfast, an hour out of the car and then we'd be happy to caravan. I'll call you when we're close. We can also transfer one canadian passenger out to give you company for the drive if you need it.

Question - I'm going through the map instruction email and I'm a bit confused about parking -- it says that the parking at the Cabin is for smaller cars (that'd be me), but then it says to go on and proceed to the Camp parking lot and that you'll be shown to the Cabin and then shuttled back? What if I can't even get into parking at the Camp b/c of low clearance? I also read some instructions about humping it from the Cabin to the Camp - but the email says there will be shuttle runs. I'll be arriving during the normal time, Wed 10 am to 6 pm some time (probably on the earlier end).

The gate should be open. Look behind the sign once you pull in and you will find a GMRS radio in a plastic bag. Turn it on, and contact us on channel 15.

<- is that talking about at the Cabin or at the Camp?

Sorry this is probably clear as day to those who've been :)

You should park at the cabin. There will be folks to shuttle you to the parking area (woods) nearer camp, or you can walk. It's 600 or 800 meters down the road. Either there will be a radio at the cabin or you can hang out for the next person to come by to help out. Or start walking. You have many options. :-)

I'm going to try to get there fairly early so I have time to set up my hammock which I have no experience with. I expect it to take a while. After that You guys can put me to work. I make a good mule. My Dad always said he had brains best suited for heavy lifting.

Steph and I will be arriving Thursday mid-morning. I think I'll drop her off with our gear, drive back to the cabin, park, and then walk back; it ain't a bad walk if you're not carrying a bunch of crap.

I just felt like sharing, I guess.
