american style boxing.

It's what I base knife fighting and stick/cane techniques on Wait as in you have a knife or cane and they do and attack their hands? Last I checked Zombies didn't run around armed!. Regular unarmed I try to administer muey thai leg kicks and american style boxing. What is American style boxing? Bite their ear off?
I've proven in hours and hours of sparring that it's much easier once you disarm your opponent.Ah sparring, controlled environment, all the usual caveats apply. Also how long are your knife spar drills, no longer than 30 seconds I hope! And if fricken hurts bad to have your hand cut or smashed. Can attest to fact it hurts, also can attest to people still holding a knife Usually causes the opponent to drop their hand leaving juicy portions open.
Never fought with real knives but escrema sticks hurt real bad even at sparring speed.

I'm not convinced.

My training shows that is very distance related, assuming the knife is already deployed. If you're getting ambushed with a knife, nothing else matters but controlling the knife. You might draw a pistol and kill him with it, but you will get lethal cuts in the 1 to 1.5 seconds it takes you to draw.
Not to mention Mr. Knife Dude will be slashing w/ his right hand, and trying to prevent your draw with his left.

Kelvar wrote:Yeah, they were talking about a scenario in which the bad guy is displaying a knife and threatening you. I see the point, I just don't like the odds of getting into a wrestling match over a knife when I've got a perfectly serviceable pistol on my hip. Maybe this merits more thought on my part.

Touche, murph.

It is easy enough to prove - get an blue gun and a training knife. Go after it and see what happens.

Well, they demonstrated that for me, but I think this is really hard to simulate. There are so many factors to consider. I mean: on the one hand assume you can't clear leather and the bad guy slices a major artery. At the other extreme, what if you draw your weapon and empty two rounds into his face before he reaches you? (Extreme example, I'd go for center of mass, but I'm trying to make a point).
It just goes against every instinct I would have to not bother going for my pistol and to instead struggle for the knife. I'm keeping an open mind here, though.
