Ridiculously large signature images

Postby kyle » Sat Aug 11, 2007 3:24 pm

Some of you have ridiculously large signature images. Our recommended size limit for signatures is 200x600 pixels (see example below). Anything that requires you to scroll to the right or down a lot to read the thread is annoying to your forum pals. Please remove or resize any large signature images.

Also, please be reasonable with the file size of the image. Keep it under 100 KB. If you have trouble resizing it, I'm sure some of your friends around here with photoshop/paint/gimp skillz will be able to help you out.

We reserve the right to remove anyone's signature if we feel it's disruptive to the forum. We'll be nice and send you a PM to let you know if we remove your signature.

Thanks!

It's not the giant-sized sigs that kill me, it's the giant-sized sig FILES.

I think the current ZS record was some guy with a 600KB animated gif.

Yeah, fuck you, Jeriah and molotov cocktail guy! We're mad as hell and we're not gonna take it any more!

...actually, molotov cocktail guy is the only annoying one. I'm madder when a dozen people quote someone who posted a picture just to say "ROFL."
I think a good gift for the President would be a chocolate revolver. And since he is so busy, you'd probably have to run up to him real quick and give it to him.

It really gets me when someone posts a URL that's 3 pages long.

The big sigs are hard on people with low bandwidth too.

If you set your cache correctly it will download it only 1 time....after that it will not keep trying to download it so next time it will open the images much much faster

Good to know about the sig image size... I'm thinking about making one.
Does your BOB at least have: water, basic tools, fire, food, first-aid kit, and shelter?

I modified the sigs so that images that are over 600px wide or over 200px tall will not show up. Problem solved. :)

Just FYI.

PWNT.

Haha I love this upgrade already. Can you put a byte cap on it so the 2 meg animated GIF nightmares get trashed too?

I think mine is wider, but a hell of a lot shorter and it is only one quote.

Stuff bigger than 400x100 makes me sad.

I think kyle's image above is even stupid big for a sig :\

Of course, I think sig images are just silly in the first place, but whatever :)

This might be a good time to talk about freakishly large signature files again, because one forum member's sig file was so large from a file size standpoint that he burned up his monthly hosting allotment.

Please get your sig files down under 100K.

While 1.2MB for an animated gif of a man riding a pig while drinking beer is plenty awesome, requiring a meg to be downloaded every page load isnt awesome.
