Introducing my custom bowie

Postby JoeTosco » Thu May 13, 2010 7:48 pm

Hi everyone.

Instead of replying on some general topic, I chose to create my own. Hope this is not a problem.

As many of you, I was always fascinated with big blades, specifically big bowies, and handmades were a long last dream.

Well, last year, I decided to buy me one, as a birthday's gift. :)

Having the materials and design im mind, I began to discuss the project with a friend and bladesmith from the south region of Brazil(My country).

In less then 20 days the knife was finished, and looked even more beautifull than I imagined.

The specs:

Full tang, 9 1/2" long and 7.8mm thick blade, made of 52100 carbon steel made by forging. It features a strong point, instead of more commom clip point designs.

The cutting edge and point are harder than the rest, because of the special temper he made. After being polished looks like japonese hamon. This is clear when you see the pictures below.

Stag/buffalo horn handle. Some spacers also.

304 stainless steel guard and pommel.

The sheath is from another friend, leather artist. It's made of cow hide, with inlays of lizzard skin.

All this was part of the original idea, soon after my girlfriend gave me my Croc Dundee hat. They were meant to match, and it worked!

The price of the knife + sheat was a little over 300 US dollars, but I can guarantee it was well worth it!

All I can say is that I could not expect a blade to performe so well, even a custom one.

Needless to say that I'll never go into the woods without it again.

Enought talk, let's see some pictures:

And finally, the Croc Dundee "kit" :D

Nice Knife, very nice.
You live in Brazil eh? Do you work for Taurus? I ask because many of us here have warranty issues to discuss.
 just kidding
Welcome man, really cool knife, I would say it was worth it and a good deal.

Hahahaha, as a matter of fact, here in Brazil many of my fellow shooters have issues with Taurus as well. :D

And with crap grade ammunition made by CBC(Magtech for you).

About this knife, sent all the others to retirement! (With the exception of my Victorinox Camper, and my Smith&Wesson ExtremeOps Urban Camo, both go with me 24/7)

Beautiful Bowie. There are quite a number of skilled bladesmiths in Brazil and Argentina. If you don't mind sharing, who is your friend who made the Bowie? I'm curious if he's someone whose work I've seen on other forums.

You got a bargain!

That's a beautiful blade you got there, and the sheath is just icing on the cake. Very nice.

Bowie looks awesome.... Btw, since you are from there, I am curious as to what the laws on weapons are in your country- can one carry a knife openly- what are the gun laws? I am curious about these issues and how they impact other societies than my own.... and I want to know what to expect should I find myself down that way....

Hi Storm Crow!

Indeed, here we have a handfull of good knifemakers.

This one in particular is Jean Callegari, and his website is http://www.callega.com/

There's an english version there. Have fun. :D

By the way, I'm a fan of Neotribal Metalsmiths!

About 10 years ago I came across the website, and more recentrly saw a video from Woodsmaster series.

The idea of forging the simplest way attracted me, maybe one of this days I'll give it a try.

Fire, gun laws have been increasingly restrictive around here.

The citizen has to face high taxes and burocracy and most of the population don't care enough to guns to go trough all of it.

Concealed carry costs about 500 dollars a year, and needs government approval, wich almost nobody can get.

Defensive use gets restricted to home defense.

Sport has a little more freedom, but at the cost of even greater burocracy. And taxes. :D

Since some of us are gun lovers too, we can do nothing but go along with the game an pay the federal licences.

The gun culture here has been satanized for decades now, thanks to the commie propaganda infiltrated in the media and college, forming a brainwashed society, and most of us "gun nuts" are seen as rambo wannabes, hehehe

About blades, it's a lot different. There's no ban. We can have all kinds of blades, without the need for any special license.

Carrying is also not a problem, but of course I don't mean I could go inside the subway holding this big bowie like I was about tho sacrifice a virgin. :D

Discreetion is always good, and I have carried my Smith folder for two years now, and since a few months ago a Victorinox camper is also with me daily.

I used to carry different blades, but now I guess I'll stick to those in urban environment.

In the woods the bowie replaces the Smith. :D

Guess that gives the idea of the situation here.

Any doubt, just ask.

Well, what do you know? I *thought* it might be Jean's work. He has a rather distinctive plunge cut (where the grind for the cutting edge starts). Tell him some random guy from Texas was able to recognize his work because of his distinct style. :D

The Hoods Woods Primitive Knifemaking video is great, and I've had the pleasure of visiting both Tim and Tai since I bought the video years ago. Great guys, both of 'em.

Thanks for sharing this Bowie and sheath with us.
